Goku was wide-eyed. \"Wow! This is even better than dinner!!\"
\"Only you would be able to speak coherently with your mouth full,” Gojyo grumbled groggily.
\"What was that, pervy kappa???\"
\"Stupid chimp.\"
\"You\'re askin for it, cockroach!!\"
\"I told you never to call me that again!!!\"
\"SILENCE!!!!\"
Pause.
\"Sanzo, please, calm yourself.\"
Gojyo couldn’t help himself. \"Yeah, don\'t want His Holiness to get a stroke.\"
BANG.
Sigh. \"Sanzo, I\'ve asked you not to use your gun indoors.\"
\"Sorry, Hakkai,\" the monk mumbled.
Chiaki giggled. “It’s a shame you have to leave. My mom and brother will be returning tomorrow. I’m sure they’d love to meet you, and you them.”
“I’m afraid we’re on a bit of schedule,” Hakkai told her.
“I see.”
“Chiaki, do not make Hakkai and his friends feel guilty just for continuing on their way.”
“Sorry, Father. Sorry, Hakkai-san.”
“It’s quite all right.”
“Will you come visit on your way back?”
Hakkai and Sanzo traded a ‘look.’
“If there is one, certainly,” Hakkai managed to say cheerfully.
“We should go now,” Sanzo said suddenly. He stood and headed outside. Gojyo pulled Goku along, who was still trying to grab at food.
“I’m afraid that’s our cue,” Hakkai told the girl and her father.
“You go when Sanzo says?” Chiaki asked.
“Well, he’s kind of our group leader,” he explained.
“Oh.” Her cheeks began to shine with tears. “Hakkai-san, I’m going to miss you so much I don’t want you to leave ” she cried, embracing the man.
Hakkai gently returned the gesture. “Life is unkind to us sometimes, but that is how our spirits grow stronger. And who knows? Maybe we will come back this way to find you being courted by a future husband.”
“I’ll study hard for you, Hakkai-san,” she promised.
“Farewell, Chiaki-chan.”
“Farewell and be safe, Hakkai-san.”
“Be... safe...”
“She always told you to be safe. Since she can’t anymore, I’m telling you.”
“Thank you, Chiaki-chan.”
“You’re welcome, Hakkai-san.”
With one more final embrace, he left the girl with tears in his eyes.
