Chapter Four: Where the Heart Lies

A road trip… I could not believe what Rachel was telling me. I frowned; knowing road trips were usually shitty journeys that had no real destination. I expressed through my postures that I had no intention of going, but she made me. I stared at her deep almond eyes, wanting to just convince her with my sand look. But she did not fall for it. I’m guessing all she saw in my eyes were ice.

“Come on Sovereign, it will be fun,” Rachel said, patting my dark fur.

I snorted, which actually meant “I want to stay here with Osiris,” but she wouldn’t understand me. She already packed her things and my things. She was going with a few other trainers whom I did like very much.

“Inside the poke-ball,” Rachel said. I whimpered. I haven’t been in a poke-ball for the longest while, and I don’t want to go back in. Rachel sighed, “Fine, you can stay out of your poke-ball, but if you give trouble, then you’re going back in.”

I gave a wayward smile.

Before I left, I went into the room to see Osiris. He did not project any hologram right now, but I talked to him.

“It’s a silly road trip,” I started, “It’s nothing.”

“What about your battle tactics?”

“What about them?” I asked nonchalantly.

“Maybe you do need a vacation, it will a rest from everything you went through.”

I sighed and frowned, “I’m going to really miss you…”

Osiris’ screen flickered, he was trying to project a hologram of that Umbreon he usually did. He succeeded, his mixed light form walked towards me.

“I will miss you as well.”

“Sovereign!” Rachel called out from the other room, “We don’t have all day, come on, the van is here!”
I reached out for his form but pulled back my paw. He would just fragment into sparkling light and no matter for me to grasp. I turned away and pulled the door behind me with one of my tails wrapping around the doorknob and pulling it close. With my head hung low, I jumped into the van along with the other trainers and their pokemon. I placed my paws on the window and stared out the window. The van started up and drove off into the sunlight. When it was out of sight, I sat down on the chair, trying to lull myself to sleep. Maybe this 2-day road trip will go faster and easier if I went through it sleeping.

Though I tried my hardest to sleep, I was becoming sick from all the road bumps this van was driving over. Though it was a very large van, I felt like I had no space at all.

“How long…” I moaned. One of the pokemon that were there answered when he heard my moan.

“About one more hour ‘til we reach the hotel,” he said.

I groaned, nothing was going right with me.

I sat in a small plush bed next to Rachel’s. The room was large and Victorian, with a slight Indian/African like allure towards it. It was beautiful, though lonely and reserved. Rachel came in exhausted, sweat beading down her dark skin as she threw herself on the bed. She laid there for a few minutes before going outside to meet Starlet.

I hated to admit it, but I was becoming jealous of Rachel’s attention towards Starlet and her pokemon. Out of spite, I decided to eavesdrop on their conversation. I listened closely, for I heard Rachel’s voice.

“I’m becoming worried Starlet,” Rachel said. “Sovereign has been strange lately.”

“She’s always been strange.”

“I mean,” Rachel thought before talking, “You know I have a room with a computer right. I brought an Interactive Battle Series—you know holographic pokemon. But Sovereign has been…well lately, either becoming obsessed with battling, or attached to the program.”

“What the hell do you mean?” Starlet said.

“I walked by the room when Sovereign was in it. She was barking, growling, making noises and even saying some vocals towards the computer. The computer responded, however, I could understand the respond because it responds in English.”

“Well, you said, it is Interactive.”

“God,” Rachel said. I saw her place a hand over her forehead, “I must be losing my mind.”

“I think Sovereign will have hope. Just a week ago…” Starlet said, reaching into her pocket and pulling out a poke-ball, “I caught an Arcanine. Maybe she’ll like him.”

“This better work,” Rachel muttered beginning to walk towards the door, opening slightly. I pretended to be asleep.

“Hey Sovereign, I think you will like a new friend Starlet has. Here, you two go get acquainted.” She threw the poke-ball on the ground and it opened, revealing a handsome and physically appealing Arcanine, whose fur glowed almost like the sun.

I should not help but stare directly at him, captivated. He must have been in good condition when Starlet caught him.

Starlet and Rachel left and locked the door. The Arcanine walked towards me.

“You are an odd looking Ninetails.”

I hissed at him, “That’s because I was born strange…or deformed.”

He walked towards me closer.

“Keep your distance,” I threatened.

“Calm down,” The Arcanine sighed. “You are beautiful you know that. With your oddity comes beauty, and if anyone says you are strange, including me, you go ahead and be hostile.”

I looked at him. Nobody ever said to me. Never.

I took the liberty to scan his mind and while I was doing so, I frowned. He was lustful. But what surprised me the most is that I wasn’t aroused by either traits—his flattery nor his beauty. I sat there, emotionless.

I walked towards him, giving him a false smile. I was right in his face before I gave a soft sigh.

“You are nothing to me.”

The Arcanine looked crestfallen when I said that.

“You are a liar,” I continued. “Driven by own desires. You want, but you cannot have, and you will never have me.”

“So what must I do to win your heart?” The Arcanine said softly, “I will be honest if you like.”

“That’s a start,” I muttered, “Bring me some food, I’m starving, and bring me some quilts. If you do so, I will consider you.”

The Arcanine had a glimmer of false hope in his eyes as she opened the door and rushed out the room. I chuckled to myself.

He came back in a few minutes, with chocolates, rice, pokemon food and soft cotton sheets. He also took the liberty of getting a rose. He placed the food in front of me and the cotton sheets over me, setting the rose to my feet.

I burned it. I turned into char and blackened it into ashes.

“You honestly think you had a chance?”

“I did what you asked for! How selfish and cold are you?”

“What? You want me to throw myself to you because you are a smooth talker and you look handsome? I do what I want to get by. Like I said, you are nothing to me. You are an insignificant bug on the windshield, being squashed by the windshield-wipers. You are a piece of shit from the cow. What, just because you bring me things you’ll think I start to warm up to you? Fuck out of here.”

The Arcanine obviously looked hurt, like everything he hoped for was crushed.

“They said you were a lovely and beautiful creature, I guess they were wrong.”

“No, they were right. All you want is to have a fling. Get away from me, I’m not looking for that, so shoo you little roach, shoo, that’s right, get the fuck out of here.”

The Arcanine stood firm in its place. My anger was seething now. “GET OUT!” I screamed, flames flared from my mouth and the Arcanine recoiled and trotted out of here, looking ashamed and disgruntled.

“I know it hurts,” I said with a wicked and malicious voice.

***
During the way home, Starlet complained about me and how her Arcanine came back whimpering. It was evident that I turned him down…and 4 other pokemon that the other trainers in the van had. Rachel looked at me, worried and more and less a bit annoyed. I was nearing the age and level where I pokemon is supposed to accept the court of another pokemon, fall in love and make babies. It was more complicated than it sounded. Rachel tried to convince Starlet that I do not have any problem. She said,

“My problem is that I am cold.”

I was right about the road trip, it was shitty. There was absolutely nothing to do in that hotel but to mope around. I tried pleasuring myself and thinking about Osiris while I was there, but it wasn’t the same thing. However, I couldn’t wait to be back home. As soon as the van pulled up in the drive way, I rushed out into the driveway and into the computer room. I closed the door and walked slowly towards the computer.

“Are you on?” I asked.

Lights danced on the screen before the voice answered, “I am on.”

I walked towards the monitor and kissed it.

“Do you feel that?” I asked.

“No,” Osiris said.
I moaned, this was just like my dream. He couldn’t feel anything.

“Project yourself,” I said, “In your hologram form.”

Osiris did so, as an average looking Umbreon. I walked towards him slowly and lifted my paw towards his. He also lifted his paw. We slowly touched, except his paw burst into a thousand brilliant glimmers of fragments and reformed.

“Pretend,” I said softly. “I know you can’t feel…but just pretend.”

I lifted up my paw again, put it close his but not touch it. It would look like we holding paws from a distance.

I looked at Osiris and sighed.

“You can’t image it right?”

“That’s it,” Osiris said, projecting my melancholy emotion back to me, “I’m only imagined. I’m not real.”

He said this in my dream. It wasn’t fair. The perfect one for me was an artificial pokemon…just a computer program. I felt ashamed and happy at the same time. I knew I could act myself around Osiris. This friendship we formed was quite strong, and for each of us, the first friendship we ever had.
