The temple’s darkness hung endless over her head. Her footsteps faded and suffocated; lost in the blackness that sprawled about. Somewhere behind she could hear him calling, over and over, the panic in his tone echoing sharp off the moss covered stone walls. She shut up her guilt the best she could, locked away the look of him smiling so sweetly as he invited her out to his work site; to the labyrinth-like Maya temple. She didn’t want to realize how she must have ruined his day, suddenly running off as she had, disappearing into the temple’s damp dark belly.

She had no choice, she told herself, following the shadow of darting purple lightning that cut through the darkness ahead of her; just out of reach. Something about the rainforest; the thick air of the creeping congealing heat, had riled one of the cards Sakura had yet to change… Dash. It took off like a fuchsia bullet into the maze, and Sakura had little choice but to follow, leaving the excavation team –and her father- behind.
The temple’s archways opened gapping to the jungle beyond; a tangle of spidery green vines and bony black branches decorated in rings of flowers, flashes of feathers and glittering animal eyes. Sakura faltered, hesitated for just a moment ad the violet light of sunset ripped so suddenly into her eyes. If her case for Dash brought her out of the temple and into the jungle, she knew getting back to her father would be all the more difficult.

Dash darted towards the gapping mouth of the temple, its fur lit brilliantly with the sunset. The staff was in her hands before she had time to think.

“Wood!” a card she had previously changed; ready to use at a moments notice. Strong wooden limbs leapt out across the arching doors in the space of a moment, leaves and vines blotting out the light. Dash went crashing into the foliage, hissing and growling, it’s long elegant tail lashing wildly as the vines slithered around its lithe lean form. Sakura scampered up a few moments later, panting heavy, clutching her staff tight to her chest. Soft gold light flitted about her face, shushed away the shadows and dusted glitter atop the fine coat of sweat that clung to her skin, as the magic circles whirred under her feet. Sakura murmured the incantation, watching as Dash’s wild eyes were lulled with calm, its tiny shaking form incased in a soft pink hue. The small creature dipped its head in apology, cooing gently before its form flickered, turning to a flash of pink light before settling as a Sakura card in her waiting open palm.

Sakura let out a long tired sigh, crumbling to her knees in the mouth of the temple. The thick wind tussled her bangs, drew the beads of sweat down her flushed cheeks, further still along her peaches-and-cream throat. She held the new card in gentle fingers, stroking the cool clean surface. “You always have to make trouble, huh?” she murmured fondly, indulging in a few more moments of rest before tucking the card into her pocket, and replacing her staff as a pendant around her neck.

“Okay…” she faced the darkness of the temple behind her, feeling nervous butterflies surge up in her stomach. One steps sent the echoes of it scattering endlessly into the seemingly limitless shadows. Sakura swallowed, shuffling forward little my little, as the fear and nervousness battled inside her stomach.

“Dad…?” she called out meekly, the sheer space of blackness around her seeming to consume her voice. Slowly the light from the huge doorways ebbed away, leaving her surrounded in shadow.

It had been far longer then she would have liked when she finally spotted the meek coughing light of a single lantern floating through the halls ahead of her.

“Dad?” she called; voice sore and overused, throat coated in a dry itching ache.

“Sakura?” panic was written across every part if him; his sharp jolting movements and his darting bright eyes. “Sakura!” he swooped over her, wrapping her in a tight sudden embrace. “Sakura…” for a few long moments he indulged in her presence, feeding his relief on the feel of her small body held tight against his, the smell of her hair –jungle flowers and sweat- and the soft patter of her heartbeat against his own.

“M-m’sorry,” the words fell out of her awkwardly as she was scooped into the hug, her own arms struggling to tangle tight about his shoulders. Her skin was cold from the temple air, a chill that was unnatural for a jungle nestled snuggly under her skin. “I-I didn’t mean to wonder off, I just… looked up and you weren’t there and…”

“Didn’t you hear us calling you?” gently his fingers cupped the curve of her shoulders and drew her back. He peered down to her eyes, his own of stern amber, of dull sickly receding panic. Of relief.

“I did but I wasn’t sure where to go…” Sakura murmured. She wished that she could have used one of her cards to help her find her way back, but with few transformed and very little energy to change another, Sakura scarcely had the energy to walk, let alone chase another run away if her attempt to change the needed card failed. So it had been hours for her at least, wondering about in the temple, keeping her eyes on the hall ahead. The walls were covered in pictures, crafted from pieces of polished stone and carved into the rock. There were skulls and spilled bottles of red liquid, people dancing with severed heads, people with broken limbs twisted awkwardly behind them; people twisted and pressed together, their skin wet with blood. Sakura shivered, remembering only a few brief glimpses, and then burying her face against her father’s neck

“… If you’re going to come with me to these places, then you have to be more careful…” Fujitaka murmured; his fingered soothing through Sakura’s hair. She nodded stiffly, her hair a breath against his cheek, her face pressed snug to the skin of his neck. Fujitaka took a deep calming breath, urging all the panic, all the other feelings that would make his stomach surge to fade. “Come on…” he stood slowly, letting his hand slip from Sakura’s shoulder, his fingers drifting steady down her lithe little arm until he found her clenched hand. He wrapped it in his fingers, his thumb stroking the dips and raises of her knuckles. Sakura relaxed a little at this, standing with her father, giving him a small apologetic smile.

“How about some dinner when we get back to the hotel?” his voice had softened as he wore a weak warm little smile.

“Okay…” Sakura clung tightly to her father’s hand, eager to leave the strange and eerie temple behind.

Sakura had been focused on the way the moonlight framed the edges of Fujitaka’s glasses when she heard the most peculiar crack under her feet. She paused for a moment, about to look down and see just what had produced such an odd cracking sound, when suddenly the leaves were rushing passed her in a blur. The ground was moving under her as her feet stumbled to catch up with it. It was a few moments later she realized she had been shoved. About to turn and ask why, the dull ache in her back flaring up under her realization, she was suddenly stopped.

“Run,” Fujitaka didn’t shout, but the force and panic in his voice struck something inside her; left her no desire to question him. She ran, ignoring her stiff limbs, not daring to look behind. Branches lashed her face, her bare arms as she moved, leaving long pink lines and tiny red nicks in their wake. Her head buzzed thickly with panic, the feeling building, welling in her chest with each throb of her heart, each clap of her feet against the soft forest floor. Vital seconds ticked by, dripping slowly one after another, until Sakura realized the buzzing wasn’t only inside her head. A sudden stab of pain over her left leg pulled a startled yelp from her lips. Her hand came down hard and stuck at her thigh, an unpleasant crunching under her skin. She looked down to see the crushed body of a wasp on her palm.

The slowly seeping seconds melted back into normal time as Sakura stopped, boots skidding along the ground, tarring up leaves, as she turned.

Fujitaka was standing quite calmly with his hands laid across his face. At his feet a large wasp’s nest, half hidden under the foliage and broken in half. He twitched helplessly against the pain but did not struggle, did not move as the wasps swarmed him, crawling over every inch of bare skin.

Sakura stood frozen, her eyes swollen in horror as her heart throbbed painfully in her throat.

“Run!” She shouted, but as the words left her lips she knew he would not move. If he did, the wasps may come after her, but if he stayed still near the nest…

Fujitaka wavered on his feet, teetering for a few painful moments before collapsing to his knees, a dizzy groan spilling past his lips.

Sakura’s staff was in her hands before she thought better of it.

“Windy!”

The wind spirit burst from the pink and gold card in a rush of green and white. It cast the humidity from the air as it swooped forward, catching the swarm of wasps and curling around them, holding them contained. Sakura was at Fujitaka’s side in an instant, turning him onto his back and looking over him with an urgent worry. She felt sick watching the welts and sores bubble over his hands and arms, watching the way his face creased in pain as he groaned, barley conscious, but breathing.

Breathing. He was still alive.

“Dad, hold on-”

He smiled at her, a weak, sad and fleeting expression, until his consciousness flickered out, and he lay limp against the ground.

Sakura clutched her staff tightly, bracing herself against her panic, her exhaustion. She drew another card.

“Hold on Dad…”
