Chapter 4
For nearly twenty minutes, Keith and the rest of the Voltron Force watched the view screen in the control room as Coran showed them image after image of devastation. Scenes of homes burning, buildings crushed, livestock slaughtered and rotting in the morning sun and trees toppled had taken the very breath from the Voltron Force.
“You said all this happened last night?” Keith asked.
“Yes,” Coran replied. “One village and 2 towns utterly destroyed.”
“What could have done all that in one night?” Pidge asked. He had only just joined the group a few moments before with a look of great relief upon his face.
“There’s only one thing that could have done all that,” Hunk stated.
“One of Zarkon’s robeasts,” Lance finished.
Keith continued staring at the view screen. There was something odd about the destruction that made him feel uneasy.
“All those poor people. We have to help them,” Allura remarked.
“That’s it!” Keith shouted. Everyone looked at him as though he were crazy. “Don’t you see,” he said pointing to the screen. No one answered him. Keith stepped over to the control panel and flicked through the images again at a much faster pace.
“I don’t get it, Keith.” Lance said.
“There are no people around. Look.”
Everyone watched the screen again as the images showed the destroyed homes and towns.
“They’re probably just hiding. Like they were when we first arrived here on Arus,” Pidge remarked.
“But there are no bodies,” Keith stated. “With that much destruction, there would be at least one body lying on the ground. There’s nothing except livestock.”
“You’re right!” Hunk chimed in.
“We better get out there and investigate,” Allura suggested.
“Allura’s right. We’ll never learn anything just by sitting around here looking at pictures,” Lance added.
“Then let’s get going!” Keith said.
Like so many times before, the Voltron Force entered their respective launch tubes. For Allura, this time was much more exciting. The wind rushed past her face as she descended below ground. As her clothes were replaced by her flight suit, she imagined what it would feel like to travel down the tube without any clothes on. She wanted to feel the wind brushing against her exposed body, letting the rush of air touch her in ways that no man has.
Allura dropped down into the seat of her Blue Lion. The sudden explosion of g-forces as it took off down the rail system towards her lion sent more excitement through her. “Why have I never noticed this much pleasure before?” she thought to herself. She closed her eyes and held onto the sides of the rocket seat, the mix of g-forces and vibrations driving her body insane. She repeated a pattern of squeezing and releasing her legs as the seat rocketed towards its destination. Allura was on the brink of ecstasy when the seat suddenly stopped.
“Damn!”
With a heavy sigh, Allura was hoisted upwards into her lion.
“Insert keys!” came Keith’s voice over the intercom.
“Keys set!” replied Allura and the others.
As one, the five lions exploded from their respective dens, filling the bright sky with the thunder of engines and the roar of lions.
Although the vibrations weren’t quite as strong as in the rocket seat, Allura could still sense the steady hum reverberating through her lion. It kept her in a constant state of excitement.
The five lions soared through the air, heading towards the 3 designated areas of destruction.
“Ok team, here’s our plan,” Keith said calmly. “Pidge, I want you and Allura to check out the village. Lance, you and Hunk will check out the nearest town that was hit. I’ll check out the third.”
“Roger that,” came Pidge’s voice.
“Understood,” replied Hunk.
“As you command, oh great one,” Lance replied jokingly.
Allura didn’t reply. Her mind was focused elsewhere.
“Allura? Did you copy those orders?” asked Keith.
“Uh? Oh yeah, got it,” came Allura’s response.
“Allura, is everything ok?” asked Keith.
“Yes, everything is fine,” she replied. Allura looked and saw that Keith was trying to talk to her through the visual communications system, but she had turned it off. She quickly removed her hand from between her legs and slipped her glove back on before activating the system. An image of Keith’s face appeared in the corner of the view screen.
“Allura, is everything alright?” he asked.
“Yes,” she replied. “I’m just worried about the villagers, that’s all.”
“Are you sure?”
“I’m sure,” she told him.
“Well, don’t worry. We’ll get to the bottom of this mystery. You just hang on there.” Keith’s image disappeared and Allura let out a sigh.
“That was close,” she thought.
“HAGGAR!” yelled King Zarkon from his throne. From a cloud of smoke beside the throne, Haggar appeared.
Zarkon began to cough as the smoke drifted into his face. “Why can’t you ever use the door like a normal person?” he said, rather annoyed.
“Because that would be far less dramatic, my King.”
“Yeah, but it would be a lot healthier,” Zarkon remarked.
“Why did you call me sire?”
“I want to know where you’ve been all this time.”
“I was following your orders, sire. You told me to keep an eye on Prince Lotor.”
“So I did. What is that worthless son of mine up to?”
Haggar manifested a crystal ball for which to show Zarkon the actions of his son. “Crystal ball within my hand, obey now, the ruler of this land. Show him now, what he needs, his worthless son’s dirty deeds.”
White smoke swirled inside the crystal ball, revealing the image of Lotor within the robeast hold pen talking to a guard.
“Show me the strongest robeast that you have,” Lotor commanded.
“Yes, sire. Right this way.” The guard led Lotor down a hallway past several office doors then took him down a flight of stairs to the holding cells.
The smoke swirled again and showed Lotor standing before a holding pen, the guard standing next to him.
“Send this one to Arus,” Lotor told the guard.
“I told him to leave Arus alone. Why doesn’t he listen?”
“Because he’s strong willed and determined, just like his father,” Haggar chimed.
“Do not flatter me, old witch. And what is your excuse? You were told to watch him and you let him send a robeast to Arus?”
“Begging your pardon sire, but you merely told me to keep an eye on him, not to stop him from doing anything.”
Zarkon growled under his breath. “It was implied that you would make him follow my orders. Where is this robeast now?”
“It has already destroyed 3 towns on Planet Arus. It is currently resting, awaiting for nightfall to attack again. Shall I recall the monster, sire?”
“No,” Zarkon conceded. “Let the robeast terrorize the people of Arus. However, once its destroyed, I want Arus off limits. Is that understood?”
“Yes sire.”
“What is the status of Cossack’s fleet?”
“The fleet is on schedule,” Haggar told him. “They will arrive at the rendezvous point at the appointed time.”
“Excellent. The resources of Planet Allebas will help reinforce our current fleet and expand our empire in the Ponea sector.” Zarkon allowed himself a smile. “Leave me, Haggar. I have important business to take care of.”
“Yes sire.” As before, Haggar disappeared into a cloud of smoke, which again caused Zarkon to cough uncontrollably.
“Damn witch is gonna give someone cancer one of these days.”
“You said all this happened last night?” Keith asked.
“Yes,” Coran replied. “One village and 2 towns utterly destroyed.”
