The Calm
Chapter 42: Halloween
Halloween had come. And with such a holiday, so came the annual masquerade ball that the Red Dragons had been throwing since Vicious had taken leadership: a great celebration that brought forth all members of high society and politicians of every walk of life to the doorstep of the Martian Hotel in the ownership of the Dragons.
The music floated over the dancing crowd of costumed partygoers. Laughter bubbled from all corners, the murmur of voices rumbling below the sound of the songs. Amaya weaved her way calmly between the warm bodies towards where Vicious and Sith stood greeting the city mayor. Vicious was dressed as a prince, most likely from the encouragement of a certain five year old. He still appeared to be something of a dark creature and also seemed well at ease in this role as host.
Sith was garbed in a black leotard, her firm and thin form covered in the figure hugging material. Over that lay a black, hooded cloak, her face covered with a red and black mask that was split in half. The red part looked to be the face of a lioness, the black appeared to be that of a skull. It seemed to suit the assassin nicely, although quite macabre in Amaya’s view.
Amaya herself was dressed as an ancient Roman lady. Her dress made of an emerald green colored silk, decorated with gold clasps and a gold rope about her waist. Her black hair was pulled up with a headband as bracelets and a necklace of the same color glinted in the light. A simple mask of red covered her eyes as a shawl of the same color covered her shoulders. She smiled to the mayor of the city and his wife genteelly.
“Good evening, Mayor Hammond… Mrs. Hammond. I take it you are enjoying yourselves?” she inquired casually.
The mayor nodded and smiled. “We are. I must say, Ms. Deacon, I am glad you are back with the Dragon Corporation. I must say that I missed your presence in society. And, I must compliment you on your costume this evening. You look stunning.”
Amaya smiled. “Thank you, Mayor. That was most appreciated. I do hope you enjoy this evening.”
The mayor nodded and led his wife towards another area, leaving her to herself. Amaya sighed and walked over to where Vicious was talking with Spike, whom was dressed as… himself with an artsy looking clown mask. Amaya chuckled as she noticed Ed beside him, Faye hg deg decided to stay at home for she was in the last weeks of her pregnancy. Ed was dressed as a black cat with a bell on her neck and all. She was enjoying the party immensely.
“Well, luv. ‘Must admit, this party is a real blast,” James commented as he handed her a drink.
Amaya turned to her blonde boyfriend and smiled. He was decked out as a centurion guard, only he was carrying a real sword to protect her with. Tonight, Sith wasn’t her only bodyguard. “Thank Vicious, not me. He’s the one that’s throwing it.”
James nodded. “True, but last year’s party didn’t have so many big wigs attending. That, my dear, is all thanks to you.”
Amaya rolled her eyes. “So I’m good with the schmoosing, what else am I good for?”
James groaned. “I can think of a few things.”
Amaya laughed. “Shut up and go save Spike from Ed.”
James saluted. “Anything for my empress!”
She smiled and shook her head as she weaved through the crowd. She then froze at the sight of blonde hair. Julia was standing not more than twenty feet from her, dressed as some sort of 18th century French aristocrat, powdered wig and all. The blonde was accompanied by a man dressed in a black cloak and red skull mask. Julia grinned as she approached Amaya.
“Ms. Deacon, a pleasure to meet you,” Julia greeted, her voice a falsely sweet poison.
Amaya smiled more naturally, her face that of true serenity. “And you are?”
A look of vehemence flashed through Julia’s blue eyes. “Julia, I believe we’ve met.”
Amaya pretended to think on it for a moment. “Perhaps… you must not have made a great impression on me.”
Julia’s sweet façade cracked. There was a feeling of hate rolling in waves beneath her voice. “I understand. I am a representative of the Tiger Corporation. This gentleman of few words is my associate, Mr. Kage.”
Amaya felt a cold fear lance down her spine, although she showed no sign of it. “A pleasure to meet you again, Mr. Kage.”
The masked man bowed. “Believe me, the pleasure is all mine.”
Amaya nodded with a glint of fake, but convincing, arrogance in her eye. “I’m sure.”
“Amaya, do introduce me to your acquaintances,” Vicious’ voice broke through the tense air around the trio.
Amaya turned to the silver haired man and Sith and sent them both a thankful smile. “Vicious…Sith, this is Miss Julia and her associate, Mr. Kage, of the Tiger Corporation.”
Vicious glared at Julia, not one for masking his emotions. “I see. Please, enjoy the festivities. If you will excuse us, there is someone that Ms. Deacon needs to meet with.”
Julia smiled sweetly and nodded. “But of course, don’t let me keep you. We’ll see one another soon enough.”
Vicious nodded. “Indeed,” he growled as he moved within a whisper of her face. “Know this, Julia, you may be safe here this night, but, know this, vengeance, for the wrongs you have committed against those I love, will be mine.”
Julia laughed. “Your empty threats mean nothing to me, Vicious. And know this, I will prevail.”

Amaya stared into her reflection. Her skin seemed pasty and pale, her steel colored eye seemed nearly white and wild with fear. The party had seemed to drag on after her incident with Julia. Now, that it was over, the fear that had been covered so easily with a mask of calm serenity, was free and running rampant through her mind.
Kage had been there, she could feel his strange and penetrating stare through that macabre mask of his. No man had ever made her feel so afraid, yet so aroused. It was like looking into the eyes of a rapist. Suddenly, her mind flashed to when Vicious had raped her. The same look had been in his eyes, the same madness and obsession.
“You’re trembling,” Sith’s deadpan voice cut through her mind like an ice pick.
Amaya looked to her bodyguard’s reflection in the mirror. “I’ve never been this afraid before,” she whispered.
“I didn’t know you could be afraid.”
“Who am I?” Amaya asked.
“You are who you’ve always been.”
“Am I? In every incarnation I’ve created for myself, I’ve been strong. This time… this time I’m so weak… I can’t even shoot the same, anymore. I try… I try to be strong, but I’m not…. Just another act.”
“Amaya…” Sith began.
“Is that even my name anymore?”
“Of course it is. Amaya, you don’t have to be strong. You don’t need a new name, you’ve had too many as it is.”
“I’m not even human anymore,” Amaya muttered. “I’m too scarred to be human.”
“You’re more human than I.”
“At least you can have another child,” Amaya snapped. “You have no idea how much that hurts… to know that I can’t give James what he so desires. He wants a family, and I’m too broken to give it to him.”
“Amaya you’re-“
“He asked me to marry him. He told me that it didn’t matter that I was forever barren, that he loved mywayyways, but someday it will. Someday he’ll want a family, and I won’t be able to give it to him.”
“What was your answer?” Sith asked.
“I told him I’d consider it. That things were just too much right now… that I needed time.”
“Typical. Amaya you haven’t changed as much as you think. You still hesitate when it comes to men. Sure, you’ll sleep with them, you’ll even let yourself fall in love with them, but you always close the door when they get too close.”
“I’m not hesitating, Sith. I want to marry him, I really do, but I have to see if this is what he really wants. He has to understand that I can’t give him what another woman could.”
“Sounds like hesitation to me.”
“Fine! I’m hesitating, Sith. I’m hesitating because I’m afraid!”
“Afraid of what?”
“You saw him… you could feel him, it’s a gift all assassins have. You could feel his obsession. Sith, he looks like Vicious, a younger, and more twisted version. It’s why Julia chose him, I’m sure. She knows that I’m more scared of him than I am of her right now.”
“Why? What scares you about him?”
“He’s draterate, Sith. He’s obsessed, desperate, insane, and he looks like Vicious. Sith, the only time I have ever felt this afraid and weak was when Vicious raped me. Sith, what if he tries to… what if he-“ her voice trailed off as she crumpled to her knees.
Sith was suddenly beside the cowering woman, crng hng her shuddering form on the floor. “I won’t hit him,” she vowed softly. “He won’t be able to touch you, I swear.”
Amaya only cried into Sith’s chest. “I’m so afraid, Sith.”
Sith clutched onto the woman tighter. “You’re safe with me, Amaya.”
Amaya nodded and let Sith hold her tightly, letting the sound of her heartbeat slowly calm her shattered nerves.
“You’re safe.”
