The Calm
Chapter 44: Lucius

He had left the rest of Amaya’s needs to Sith, knowing that his wife would do so without fail. He had sensed the feeling of failure coming from her slight form, which he understood. Kage had entered their home without bringing any attention to himself, he had then attempted to either kidnap or kill Amaya, and neither he, nor Sith, had known until Amaya had shot at him. He was ready to kill whoever was in charge of security. What if Kage had been after the children? What if Amaya had not shot at him? Would she be in the bathroom with Sith now, most likely arguing over her conversation with him.

He noticed the cleaning crew, hard at work, trying to remove the blood trail from the carpeting in the hall. Sith had done a bang up job dragging Kage to the hold, causing him to note that Sith might enjoy a vacation to some interesting hunting grounds that Spike had mentioned. Obviously, from the crimson stains on the floor, she needed some way of expressing this blood lust she had.

The guards seemed pale, probably frightened by Sith earlier. They saluted to him perfectly, nonetheless, and opened the door for him into the dark room. He could recall being on the other end of such a room, during his imprisonment by the Van and his wait for death. He could see such a hallow look in his young doppelganger’s eyes, as though Sith had scared his soul from him body.

“Kage,” he called.

The boy lifted his head. He seemed no older than twenty, but had the eyes of an older man. He waloverover until he was barely a foot away from the young man. Slowly, he took in the bloodstained clothes on his frame, the loose and heavy black shirt and stiff black jeans that were stained with blood. He could even see the small pool of blood from his wound in his foot. Kage seemed to be staring through him, as though he was not really here.

“Kage, look at me,” Vicious commanded.

The boy’s pale eyes focused on him and he stiffened, truly seeing now who was before him. “Vicious…” he gasped.

Vicious placed a pale hand on the younger man’s face. “What were you thinking? Aligning with Julia? Why?” he asked.

Kage pulled his face away and stared at the wall to his right. “I thought you wouldn’t want me.”

Vicious chuckled and shook his head. “Why wouldn’t I?”

“My mother said that…”

“The woman that raised you is not your mother.”

Kage stared at Vicious incredulously. “What do you mean?”

“My mother was not your mother, but your grandmother.”

“What… my grandmother? But that’s not possible.”

“And the woman you tried to kidnap this night, Amaya is your mother.”

Kage’s eyes grew wide. “You mean… but how?”

Vicious sighed and turned to the right to stare at the small window at the top of the wall. “We were very young, Mao would have never understood. She was still going by her birth name then, Marissa. She was fifteen; I was a little older, but not much. We were on a long training mission together in another city on Mars. We were there for a year, so we didn’t have to worry about Mao finding out. I htayetayed in touch with my birthmother, especially after the mysterious death of my deadbeat father. She offered to take you in; we had to go back and didn’t want to expose you to this life. Apparently, we failed at that too.”

Kage was breathing rapidly and staring blankly at the floor. “I… I didn’t know.”

“No one but Amaya, myself and your grandmother did… Lucius.”

Kage froze. “My name… how?”

Vicious grinned. “I was there that day Amaya named you.”

Kage, Lucius, nodded. “How come she-?”

“Doesn’t recognize you? Amaya thought it was best not to keep track of you, thinking that her lack of contact with you would be better for you. I’ve been keeping tabs on you since my mother took you in.”

“Are you going to execute me?” he asked, changing the subject.

Vicious shook his head. “No, but you must help us against Julia.”

Kage nodded. “If I can, I will. Anything to make up for tonight’s… mistake.”

“You aren’t the only one to make a stupid mistake when it comes to your mother. She has a tendency to… send the wrong signals.”

Kage laughed. “She really does.”

Vicious smiled and sighed as he unlocked the chains on the boy’s wrists. “I’ll take you somewhere we can get you cleaned up.”

Amaya stared blankly out her bedroom window, the glass having been cleaned and the hole boarded over. The conversation with Sith running rampant through her head.

[Flashback]

“Are you alright?” Sith had asked immediately.

Amaya nodded. “Just a little jumpy. You overheard all that, didn’t you?”

Sith gave a slight shake of her head in the affirmative. “You still hold something against him.”

Amaya looked away. “Only a small part of me does.”

“At least you’ll admit that much.”

“How’s Kage?” she changed the subject quickly.

“Alive.”

Amaya laughed. “I hope so. He’s too young to die. No matter how misguided, he has time to change. There’s something about him… I’m frightened by him, but also…” she trailed off, a small laugh in her voice. “I want to forgive him. Maybe if I forgive him I can forgive Vicious?”

Sith cocked her head to the side in thought, unreadable thoughts flashing through those dark eyes. “This is new.”

Amaya laughed again and knelt on the floor. “I heard you fought him?”

Sith nodded. “He’s not bad, but he has a bit of a temper.”

Amaya laughed louder this time. “You know… he’s about as old as… I wonder?”

“Wonder what?” Sith asked.

Amaya shook her head and smiled to the crimson haired woman. “Nothing, old memories and nearly forgotten secrets.”

“Something involving you and Vicious?” her voice was a little guarded, along with a tinge of fear.

Amaya nodded. “Aurora wasn’t my first child, just my last… Nevermind, it isn’t important.”

“What the hell are you talking about, Amaya?” Sith snapped.

Amaya stood suddenly and moved out the door. “Nothing… an old regret from my youth that never truly left me.”

[End Flashback]

Why had the thought of her abandoned son suddenly come to her? What about Kage brought these thoughts to her? Was it his age? Or the fact that he so reminded her of Vicious in looks and herself in attitude? Or could it be that she knew… she KNEW that Vicious’ mother had never borne any other children than Vicious? She ground her teeth together and spun around to talk to the boy. She needed to know the truth.

As she passed one of the guest rooms she heard Vicious talking. She paused, listening to the soft and genway way he spoke, a voice he used when talking to his children only.

“Sith did quite a number on you,” Vicious commented.

“She’s a beast in battle. She the same in bed?” Kage’s voice asked.

Amaya froze before entering the room, seeing that Vicious was tending to the boy’s wounds and that the young man was not restrained in any way. “What the hell is going on?” she demanded.

Both pairs of pale eyes locked with hers. She could see that Kage’s eyes were slightly different to Vicious’. Where Vicious’ were pale blue, Kage’s were… grey. Amaya gasped and gripped the doorframe as a revelation washed over her.

“Amaya…” Vicious called as he rushed to her side and held onto her shoulders.

“He’s… Oh my god!” she exclaimed.

“Shh! Yes, Amaya, he is. No one else knows yet,” Vicious said, trying to comfort the increasingly hysterical woman.

“Oh my god! Oh my god! Oh my god!” she chanted.

“Mom…” Kage called, trying to get her to breathe.

“I-he-Kage-how-but-impossible!” she rambled.

“Not really all that impossible, Amaya. He does share our blood,” Vicious joked.

Amaya breathed faster, her heart thundering in her ears as she stared at the young man before her. The child she had abandoned. The boy who shared features with her five year old daughter that lay napping in another part of the apartment. “Lucius,” she gasped as her eye rolled back into her head and she went limp in Vicious’ arms.
