Foreboding

Shi sat on the beach with her feet buried in the sand as usual, watching Tenpou play with some of the local children. He was only the second, technical, god they’d ever seen and they were fascinated by just being around him. Watching the children made her think about two in particular. Those two she was worried about more than anything at the moment.

She came out of her reverie when Manuela nudged her in the arm.

“What has you staring off into space and worrying, Shi?”

“That obvious am I?”

“Only to those who know you well. What is it?”

“You remember I told you about Nataku and Goku.”

Manuela nodded. “Your ninos in heaven. The ones who’ve not been allowed to be children.”

Shi nodded. “Goku doesn’t know about Nataku’s function in Heaven. He only knows that Nataku is his friend.”

“Yes. You’re worried what will happen when he finds out about this.”

“I am. But it’s . . . more than just that. Do you ever get the feeling something is about to happen and you aren’t sure what it is but you know it’s bad?”

“Si. I have had those feelings before.”

“I just have this feeling . . . I can’t explain it but I can’t seem to shake it. I feel like my time with them is ending. It makes me afraid for them.”

“Are you sure you aren’t just being a worried Madre?”

“It’s possible. But I don’t think I’m the only one who feels it,” she said, glancing over to where Tenpou had finished playing with the children and was heading toward the two women.

Tenpou flopped down on the sand next to Shi. “So, what are you girls talking about that seems so serious?”

“Boys,” Manuela said, grinning mischievously.

Shi laughed then grew serious. “Two specific boys. Goku and Nataku. I’m worried about them.”

Tenpou sighed and pushed his hand through his hair. “I am too.”

Manuela levered herself up from the sand carefully, politely refusing help from either of her otherworldly companions. She stood looking at them for a moment, getting the same feeling Shi had mentioned concerning the two boys she loved as her own. The feeling that her own time with Shi and Tenpou was short and their time with one another was coming to a close as well. She shook her head slightly to clear the feeling a little but it stayed.

“I’ll go help Carlos make lunch and bring it down here to the beach,” Manuela said before heading off and calling for the children to follow her.

Shi and Tenpou watched her go with the group of children gathered around her like ducklings. Shi curled against Tenpou’s side, enjoying the beat of his heart under her ear for a moment.

“Shi,” Tenpou murmured into her hair. “About the boys . . .”

“I know,” Shi said sadly. “You have the feeling too. That something extremely bad is going to happen.”

“Yes. I do have that feeling,” he said, pulling her a little tighter against him as though in an attempt to ward off any impending disaster.

“We’re going to be torn apart, aren’t we,” she said. “Not just the boys but all of us. You, me, Kenren, Thies, Konzen, everyone we care about.”

“I wish I could tell you I felt differently.”

“You can’t anymore than I can say that to you, Tenpou. We both know it. We’ve seen too many shifts in the power balances in Heaven. Li Touten is trying to take over the Emperor’s position through Nataku.”

“Yes. All the signs are there. There’s also the heretic in heaven angle as well.”

“Goku poses a threat.”

Tenpou nodded. “As his keeper, so does Konzen. Add to it Konzen is the Merciful Goddess’ nephew and there is more of a right for Konzen to ascend than Li Touten.”

Shi tried unsuccessfully to suppress the chill that had skittered down her spine. “What can we do?”

“I don’t know yet because I have no concrete proof of anything.”

“Plus we aren’t certain how this will play out. Like anything else in life, I guess we’ll have to wait and see.”

“And make the most of the time we have together.”

Sorry this is taking so long to get to, everyone. I feel reluctant to do the Shi/Tenpou chapters because I know they aren\'t headed for a happily ever after. Reminds me a little too much of RL I suppose.
