A/N: I finally managed to buy a bag of sugar, so now I've had my way-too-sweet cup of tea, and the angst I was suffering from last chapter has dissolved. Mostly. There'll still be a little bit of angst in this chapter, but not as much as part 3. After all, this is the 'Happy Ending' version, right? It might just make up for the horrible, nasty, cruel things I did to poor Cain in the 'Koneko Angst' version of the ending. I still can't believe I wrote that. I feel bad about it now. ^_^;;
Anyhow, here's the happy ending. Sort of happy, anyway.
Just to clarify, this doesn't carry on from chapter 3. The idea is you chose chapter 3 if you wanted to read the sad ending, and this chapter if you wanted a happy ending. That means this chapter carries straight on from chapter 2. Ok?

Shido quickly cleaned the glass up from the floor, too worried about Cain to really pay attention to what he was doing. It was a miracle he didn't get cut by the glass shards as he scooped them up in his hand and dumped them unceremoniously in the bin in the kitchen, coming back to stand before Cain and think about what to do next. He tried to focus on how to help his mate instead of dwelling on the terrifying possibility of losing the golden-haired vampire forever. That thought scared him so he shoved it to the back of his mind and bent down to pick his mate up in his arms, surprised at how light Cain was. That little revelation stirred the fear inside him and he held Cain carefully, looking down at his beautiful face, wondering how on earth he could have ever let such a thing happen to his mate without him noticing. Making up his mind about what to do next, Shido carried Cain into one of the side rooms where his coffin lay and gently laid the unconscious vampire down in it, leaning over to undo Cain's shirt buttons.
That done, Shido looked towards the open door which led back into the office and thought about sleeping on the couch, changing his mind straight away and quickly locking up before climbing into the coffin behind Cain. Luckily it was a large coffin, and there was plenty of room if Shido wrapped his arms around his passed-out mate, which he did after he'd removed his own shirt and dropped it to the floor. Cain's soft, golden hair stroked his chest and he sighed, snuggling up closer to his mate and enjoying the feeling, refusing stubbornly to think about losing that forever. Instead, Shido tried to think about Cain and what he loved about the older vampire that nobody else could give him. He'd always told himself that Cain was evil and wicked, but now that he thought about it that wasn't strictly true, depending on the way one looked at the situation. It wasn't that Cain was *evil* as such, he just had a different set of morals from humans. He was a different species, after all, and so he thought differently. True, some of the things he'd done weren't exactly right in any sense of the word, but the reason Shido had left had been because Cain had killed humans. But... it wasn't as though Cain killed for fun, he did it to feed. He didn't have a blood sponsor like Yayoi, so he really didn't have much of a choice. He didn't see killing humans as being wrong, though. He truly believed that vampires were just above humans in the food chain, and that was it. It was a vampire's right to kill humans, just as a cat kills a mouse. It was the natural order of things.
Shido didn't see it that way. He couldn't bring himself to kill when there were alternatives, meaning Yayoi. And Cain's attitude of believing that there was nothing wrong with anything he did had driven him away. But now... now he was beginning to see Cain's side of the argument, and it made sense in some strange way. It was all very confusing.
What else did he love about Cain? Well, there were his looks, of course. He was beautiful, nobody could deny that. His long, silken hair was so soft, so nice to touch, to run fingers through... And his eyes, they made Shido melt inside every time he looked into their amber depths. His voice, with such a deep, sexy accent made Shido shiver whenever he heard it and that soft, pale skin was deliciously cool and smooth. In fact, everything about Cain was perfection, and Shido closed his eyes, holding Cain in a possessive embrace as he began to feel the pull of the sun drawing him to sleep. He wasn't going to let Cain go, no matter what happened. He had unwittingly forced Cain to the edge of a cliff, now he was going to pull him back.

//The jury is coming,

All this bitching and moaning,
Come on, it's on...//

Shido awoke as the sun set to find that Cain was now curled into his chest, his slender frame trembling in pain and his unnecessary breaths coming out as ragged gasps. Once Cain realized that Shido was awake he tried to quiet his breathing and still the tremors that shook his body, but he couldn't seem to summon the strength to disguise his weakness. It didn't matter now anyway, it would be over soon. For Shido to see him in such a pathetic state, though... He'd always stayed strong, for his Shido, but now he just couldn't keep up the façade anymore.
Shido gently stroked Cain's blonde hair and was shocked when Cain looked up at him with dead eyes, so weary and broken. And it was all Shido's fault. He'd done this to Cain, now he had to bego tro try and heal some of the damage.
Cain saw Shido's shocked expression and closed his eyes weakly, leaning in to Shido's bare chest and trying to suppress the soft groan of pain that was forced from his pale lips.
"You need to feed." Shido said softly, stroking Cain's hair reverently. It was so very beautiful...
"I have neither the strength the the will..." Cain replied in a pained whisper.
"Feed from me. You need it." Shido offered, frowning when Cain turned away, his back to Shido.
"Do not prolong this, Shido..." The blonde vampire murmured wearily, drawing in a sharp breath as Shido used his own fangs to open a deep cut on his wrist, using his uninjured hand to hold Cain against his chest while he offered his blood to his mate.
"Drink." Shido demanded. Too weak to resist the bloodlust that coursed through him at having his mate's wrist laid open before him, Cain simply let it flow over him and took Shido's bloody wrist, sinking his fangs into the cut and feeding for a few moments. Then the golden-haired vampire released Shido's hand and closed his dulled eyes silently, shuddering with the rush of new blood.

It hurt to see Cain so weak, so ready to give up and let himself fade away into the darkness, believing that Shido didn't love him. Whatever Shido had tried to tell himself for so long, he knew that he *did* love Cain. It had just taken all of this to make him realize it.
The wound on his wrist closed over quickly and he slipped his healed hand down and inside his mate's shirt to rest on the slim curve of Cain's stomach, pulling Cain back against him. He breathed softly against the back of Cain's neck, taking in his scent of cinnamon and apples, mixed with the despair inside. He felt Cain shiver and lean back against him, and began to say all the things he wanted to tell the older vampire.
"ver ver really hated you. I couldn't. I tried so hard it hurt, but deep down the vampire in me always took your side. It told me you weren't the heartless creature I forced myself to see you as. It told me that everything you did had valid reasons, even if most of the time I didn't agree with them. They made sense, at least you *had* reasons. Heartless is so far from the truth it's almost funny, since the only reason you did everything was because you believed so strongly in it, in the Golden Dawn, in saving me from the eternal darkness of death... Why would a heartless hunter have bothered to do those things? I always felt you, you know. Watching me, protecting me. Nothing could ever hurt me in your arms... I felt so good when you touched me, I want to show you how it felt, how you made me feel for all those years. I want to show you how it feels to be touched by someone who loves you." Shido murmured quietly to his mate. "I'm sorry. I'm sorry for everything; for taking all of that from you and never giving it back." The violet-haired vampire said softly, surprised to find that Cain was trembling.
"You think I need your pity?" Cain whispered in a broken voice. Shido just smiled into the darkness of the coffin and nuzzled Cain's neck tenderly.
"I know what you need." The younger vampire said, moving the hand resting on Cain's stomach down to the older vampire's thigh. Cain's eyes slid closed weakly, his spine arching back as Shido touched him through his clothes.
"Don't..." Cain moaned, placing a trembling hand over Shido's to stop him. "Not out of guilt, or pity..." He whispered, despair and pain in his grey eyes.
Shido smiled again.
"Then I will do it out of love. You are my mate." Shido breathed into Cain's golden hair, holding him.

//So what you got?
One last shot,
It seems to me,
That you're not needed,
Come on, it's killing me,
Let's see,
You'ot tot the gall,
Come take it a.// .//

At those words Cain gave a soft, choked sound somewhere between a gasd a d a sob, arching his head bagaingainst his child and letting Shido's gentle hands roam his body, stripping him of his clothes. He hardly noticed when one hand slipped between his thighs, Shido's whispered words running through his mind again, beginning to pull back everything that had slipped away like some magic spell to heal him. Long, careful fingers dipped inside him and cool lips kissed his neck and shoulders, but he barely felt any of it. Just those simple words... Shido had called him 'my mate'. It meant so much to Cain, more than Shido could ever know.
"Shido..." Cain whispered, struggling to form a sentence, or even a coherent thought through everything that Shido was doing to him. "What of... Your child... The girl..." The older vampire asked, panting as Shido's fangs scraped gently over the skin of his shoulder, sending a thrill of pleasure through him.
"Riho is a daughter, not a lover." Shido told his mate, licking the back of Cain's neck and withdrawing his fingers excruciatingly slowly.
Cain closed his eyes at those words, giving a shuddering sigh as Shido shifted to lie above him and entered him smoothly, careful to make it as painless as Cain had always ensured their lovemaking was for him.

Cain moaned softly at Shido's gentle thrusts, lying on his back with his violet-haired mate moving over him. The younger vampire marvelled at what a beautiful sight his sire made, his golden, wavy hair surrounding him and his long legs spread for his mate. The delicious sounds Cain was making drove Shido wild, the soft, almost breathed gasps of pleasure coupled with the low, pleasure-filled groans as the pace increased. But Shido didn't want this time to be just sex, this time he wanted it to truly be an act of love for his mate. The violet-haired vampire wanted to give Cain as much pleasure as he could. Shido had been the dominant partner when they had made love before, but it had always mostly been Cain pleasuring his mate. This time, Shido decided, *he* would make *Cain* scream.

Cain gave a choked moan as Shido lifted one of his sire's legs to sink further into him, the golden-haired vampire watching through glazed yellow eyes as Shido leant down to lick his chest. The light brush of Shido's sharp fangs against one of his nipples had Cain arching up into the touch, silently begging for more, crying out when Shido bit down playfully.
"May I?" Shido asked in a whisper, his lips moving up to hover against Cain's throat, kissing the cool skin. Cain arched his head back in offering, baring himself for his mate's fangs.
"You need not ask... Shido... Ahhh..." Cain moaned, his spine curving into an elegant bow as Shido sank his razor fangs into the soft flesh.
Cain's sweet blood filled Shido's mouth and he savoured the wonderful taste, eyes half-lidded in pleasure. But he had not bitten Cain out of the need to feed, it went much deeper than that. Shido had been marked in such a way many times by Cain, a clear show to the world of their love. But now it was Shido's turn to leave the on on Cain, to show any other that Cain was *his* lover and no one else would have him. Besides, the rapture induced by the bite of his mate had Cain writhing in ecstasy, climaxing with a scream of pleasure when Shido's delicate hand slipped between them to stroke him firmly.
Shido licked the wound on Cain's throat closed and raised his head to watch Cain moan helplessly and shudder in the throes of release, the beautiful sight and the feeling of Cain's long nails digging into his shoulders enough to bring Shido over the edge as well. The younger vampire came with a sharp cry and threw his head back, moaning Cain's name breathlessly until the last shudders passed and he collapsed next to his mate, drawing Cain into his arms.

On...//

Cain allowed himself to be held against Shido's chest, listening to the long-dead heart beating. His golden hair was damp with sweat and his eyes were closed, breath coming in soft gasps in the darkness.
"Cain?" Shido murmured softly. Cain opened his cat-like eyes and looked up, exhausted. "Please don't leave me." Shido whispered, a tear leaving his eye.
"Is it not you who is always leaving me?" Cain replied softly, his yellow eyes glowing sadly.
"I'm tired of the game now. It's over." Shido breathed against his mate's silken hair. "I'm not running anymore. It's time... for me to come home." Another tear fell, lost in the shadows.
Cain closed his eyes and chuckled softly, sighing.
"I have been telling you that for centuries, my Shido." He said, leaning up to kiss his mate's soft lips.

That was... fluffier than I meant it to be. And, um... yes. Well. I think I liked the sad ending better, other than what happens to Cain at the end. I won't tell you, but it's pretty obvious, huh? Well, tell me what you thought, which ending you liked best, etc, etc... Leave me a review, pleeeease? And you have to nag me to get on with 'Sweet Psychosis', because you know I'm hopeless and I need to be whined at before I do anything.
