Loss Of Innocence

Leon woke early, the dawn light streaked though a crack in the heavy curtains. He looked over at D, he was still sleeping soundly, flipping his phone open, he switched it one and found he had a voicemail. Checking with his service he found the message was from Jill. \"Hey Leon, you have to get in to the office in the morning, the captain\'s been in a goddamn awful mood and threatened to suspend you if you don\'t.\" Leon sighed, looked like D\'s explanation would have to wait.

Leon groaned as he saw his desk or rather what he could see of his desk. Jill had been true to her word, all the paperwork she\'d been putting off was on his desk and under it. The morning had started off with the Chief shouting at him for an hour then he\'d been pillar to post with tests from the psyches now he sat at his desk staring at more paper than he\'d ever seen before. Picking up the phone he dialled the pet shop number. \"You are though to Count D\'s pet shop, please leave a message after the tone, thank you.\"
\"Sorry Count, gotta a load of fucking paperwork. See you tonight, I hope! You can give your explanations then.\"

D woke and wondered where Leon was, looking at the clock he saw it was lunch time. In the quiet he heard the phone ring, he let the answer machine tit. it. He heard Leon leave his message, D sighed, at least it would give him some more time to figure out an explanation.

Leon entered the shop bearing a box, D was sitting at the table. \"Forgive me for not standing Officer but I am still a little weak.\"
\"No problem, I brought a cake for you as a get well present\"
\"Very thoughtful of you Officer.\" Leon noticed D had slipped back to using formal tones. \"You said we should talk\" Leon sat opposite D, waiting for him to talk.
\"I feel I should explain what happened at Mrs Andover\'s.\" D paused for a moment and sipped his tea. \"The Irith is a rare creature, it has many unusual talents used for its defence, you and I have experienced one of them. The vapour it produced is a powerful aphrodisiac which caused the effect we experienced. I cannot say if there is any lasting after effects of the spray.\"
\"So, what about this illness of yours, was that an effect of the spray?\" Leon looked at D questioningly.
\"No merely a blood disorder that many of my lineage suffer from. The attack merely coincided with the spraying.\"
\"So your saying that can\'t trust what I might be feeling at the moment because of that fucking creature!\"
\"This maybe the case.\"
\"Well shit Count, because for one moment I was feeling fucking happy because I thought you just might love me because it sure as hell feels like I fucking love you! But now I can\'t even fucking trust that!\" Leon slammed the chair back and stormed out.
D put his head in his hands, from between his delicate fingers a tear fell to his Chongsam.
