Chapter 5: Instinct of the Wolf
She sat up in bed, Aurora sleeping next to her, clutching her waist. One leg was bent, her arm resting on the knee as she leaned against the wall. ‘I can’t be a mother to this child. Sith has done a fine job. I heard what he said. He loves her.’
“All you need is wings,” a dark voice said from the doorway.
Amaya turned to see Vicious leaning against the doorframe. “Wings?”
“You’d be an angel, a fallen angel, if you had wings,” he explained.
Amaya smiled. “Oh, you’re in a good mood.”
“Everyone has seen you awake, save me,” he said.
“Well then, this is you’re lucky break,” she said.
“She asleep?” he asked.
Amaya looked down at the slumbering blonde child at her side. “Yes.”
“I see.” His voice sounded slightly relieved.
Amaya raised a brow. “What’s wrong?” she asked.
“I mourned you.”
Amaya’s eyes went downcast. “I heard.”
Vicious snorted. “You heard about the funeral?”
Amaya nodded. “Yeah. How have you been?” she asked, changing the subject to one, not quite as morbid as her own funeral.
“Good. We’re flourishing, in fact. All my enemies have a tendency to have a run in with a certain wolf,” he said.
Amaya chuckled. “You found me out, I see.”
“You’re friend, Rodger Smith, came by. Nearly got his throat ripped out by Sith.”
Amaya laughed. “He is quite… annoying at times.”
“How about you?” he asked.
“Better, far better than I used to be. I miss my old life, sometimes, but I figured that everyone was better off thinking me dead.”
“I suppose.”
“So, are you going to propose to Sith, or am I going to twist your arm?” she asked, teasingly.
“I’ll propose when I’m ready.”
Amaya snorted. “Before or after she bears you a child?”
Vicious seemed startled. “What?”
Amaya laughed. “Oh please, like you couldn’t tell!” Her eyes then went serious. “Do neither of you know
Vi
Vicious shook his head slightly. “What are you talking about?”
Amaya smiled. “I swear, you two are the most dense human beings on the planet sometimes. She probably can’t tell yet. She probably thinks it’s a byproduct of her changing life. I can’t really explain it, it was how I knew before I went to the docs for the first time. It’s the opposite of how I can feel death.”
Vicious raised an eyebrow. “You can feel that Sith is pregnant?”
Amaya rolled her eyes. “Don’t give me that look. Have her see a gynecologist.”
Vicious chuckled. “What should I tell her?”
“Tell her that it was my suggestion, she’ll understand.”

Sith sat outside Amaya’s room, a piece of paper in her grasp. Amaya walked out the door slowly, dressed in a pair of jeans and a large t-shirt, her coat hanging off one arm. She turned her head to where her crimson haired friend sat against the wall. Sith was to drive Amaya to her apartment, before taking her back to Vicious’.
“I was right, wasn’t I?” Amaya’s voice broke through the haze of Sith’s mind.
Sith lifted her head and locked her black eyes with the understanding grey of Amaya. “Yeah.”
Amaya smiled and sat next to Sith. “When I first found out, I thought, ‘what the hell is wrong with the powers up there? I’m not cut out to be a mother!’ I wanted to run away and hide. I thought it was too much, that I couldn’t handle it.”
“You at least were capable of caring for a child,” Sith said.
Amaya smiled and placed a hand on the black clad assassin’s shoulder. “And so do you.”
Sith turned to Amaya, her eyes shining with questions. “How can you know?”
“You raised Aurora, haven’t you?”
Sith turned her head away from her old friend and stared out into space. Her mind was a sea of endless possibilities, her logic trying to find an answer.
“Logic can’t help. You can’t calculate every possibility. You can only do your best to make sure yohildhild comes into a world that is right for them.”
Sith grasped her arm as she stood. Her grip was like a vice, her fingers digging mercilessly into Amaya’s arm. Amaya didn’t flinch. “You won’t leave, will you?” Sith asked, her voice sounding vulnerable, like that of a child that was afraid of the dark.
Amaya smiled and gathered her old partner into an embrace. “I won’t let you go through this alone, Sith. I can’t avoid my old life anymore. I will be there, aur fur friend, but you also have Vicious and Aurora to take care of you as well.”
Sith nodded. “But you understand.”
Amaya nodded. “I will not leave. Not if I can help it.”

Jet sighed as he stared at the bonsai tree before him. He wouldn’t know what to say to her should he find her. It had been so long since he’d seen her, held her, hell, even talked to her.
The communicator rang frantically. “Yeah?” Jet answered.
“Hi, Jet,” a soft, familiar voice greeted.
Jet stiffened. “Rain?”
“It’s Amaya, now, but yeah. Been a long time.”
“A real long time. Where are you?” he asked.
“With friends. I heard my bounty got canceled, the Black Wolves are too afraid of me now.”
“Yeah, heard about that,” Jet said.
“How are Faye and Spike?” she asked.
“Married and still driving me nuts.”
“Married? Those two?”
“Yeah.”
“And you?” she asked softly.
“Still here, Spike and Faye live here with Jack and Ed and Ein have a place set up on Earth.”
“I missed hearing your voice, Jet,” she said.
“Ditto, I never thought I’d ever hear it again.”
Amaya giggled. “I can understand that. I’d like to meet, if you want.”
“Yeah, when?” he asked, eagerly.
“Wednesday, we’ll meet up at… my grave,” she said before cutting off the communiqué.
Jet chuckled as he shook his head. ‘Your grave huh? You knew that I’d know where that was, didn’t you?’ he asked her mentally as he returned to his bonsai tree.
