Bittersweet Reunion

Standard disclaimer applies...I own nothing, I make no money...blah, blah, blah.

Author's Notes:

YAY! I'm back! Don't know how often I'll be able to update, but things have calmed down, health has improved and I'm ready to return to this story. Hope no one thought I was abandoning it?

Sorry, this is another one of those notoriously short chapters...forgive please. One other thing, I'm trying to get the feel for these characters again, since I've been so long away from this story and the anime/manga. I'm sure there is A LOT of OOC, but please bear with me here.

I'm still a review whore...so keep it coming.

Chapter 5- Bittersweet Reunion

Tokyo

Misao climbed off the train, her troubled thoughts hidden behind her usual bright smile. She glanced around, hoping that the messenger pigeon she had Jiya send arrived before she did. A flashing glint of sunlight off of bright red hair reassured her.

“Himura!” she cried out, jumping up and down and waving her hands excitedly causing every head in the station to turn to her in surprise.

Kenshin grimaced a little in embarrassment, then pasted a polite smile on his face as he steeled himself to be glomped in a most spectacular fashion. Misao didn’t disappoint him as she launched herself into his arms causing him to stagger back a few steps. He always forgot how strong the little ninja was.

“Himura, how are ya? How’s Kaoru and Kenji? Where are they? How’s married life? How’s Yahiko” she asked as she pounded his back, questions tumbling from her lips faster than he could answer them.

Patiently, he waited for her to wind down while he studied the too cheery face before him, “Welcome back, Misao. I am well, that I am. Kaoru-dono is well too, but since she is large with child, I would not let her come with me and when I left Kenji was napping. Married life is good and as for Yahiko, you will see soon enough, that you will. Let me take your bags.”

Misao followed him down the path towards the Kamiya Dojo. Her smile fading since she didn’t need to keep up the pretense to the back of the perceptive man’s head though she had a feeling he knew something wasn’t right.

“Misao!!!!”

Misao turned her head at the shout; her eyes widening as the tall, handsome young man ran towards her. “Yahiko?”

“Of course, weasel-girl.” He teased, bowing before her.

Misao bristled at the nickname, then surprised the two men by laughing instead of flying into a tirade, “It’s good to see you too, Yahiko-chan. Though, by the way I have to crane my neck now to look you in the eyes, that no longer applies to you, does it?”

“Yahiko? Yahiko, what’s the meaning of running off in the…oh, Misao-san.” The young woman stopped in the middle of scolding Yahiko, carefully transferred a small bundle to Yahiko and bowed deeply, “Welcome back.”

Misao smiled, “Tsubame, is that you?”

“Yes, Misao-san.”

“Oh, you look wonderful. I…” Misao’s attention was suddenly grabbed by the wrapped bundle that was squirming and cooing in Yahiko’s arms, her eyes widening again in surprise, “Is that what I think it is?”

Yahiko smiled widely and carefully unwrapped the baby, “Yes, Misao, meet our son, Shinta.”

“Oh, he’s beautiful.” Misao breathed, her heart melting at the sight of the little boy. She was genuinely happy for her friends, yet, she felt sad and envious too. Yahiko and Tsubame, both a little younger than her but now proud parents and she, foolish woman that she was, still chased a dream that constantly broke her heart.

Kenshin, sensing a little of the confusion and turmoil that radiated from the young ninja, gently broke in. “Well, Kaoru-dono is not a patient person, that she is not. If we do not get back soon, she will come after us. Yahiko, you and Tsubame-chan are to come by for dinner tonight. I am cooking, that I am.”

Yahiko nodded his assent with a look of relief in his eyes that he couldn’t quite hide. Kenshin chuckled and with a round of good-byes, they were once heading off towards the Himura’s.

“Kaoru, still can’t cook, huh?” Misao asked with a little laugh.

Kenshin’s shoulders shook with suppressed mirth, “She tries, that she does, but cooking is a skill that escapes my otherwise talented wife. Kenji and I have learned to endure those rare times she feels inspired, that we do.”

A piece of conversation suddenly came back to Misao, “Himura, did you say Kaoru was preg…with child again?”

Kenshin smiled as he caught Misao correcting herself, “Yes, the child is expected fairly soon, that it is.”

“Oh,” Misao frowned, “then you two do not need the inconvenience of an unexpected guest hanging around. I am sorry, Himura, I should have written to you instead of just showing up on your doorstep with little notice. I won’t stay long, I’ll change tickets and leave tomorrow.”

“Misao,” Kenshin said turning around and laying a hand to her cheek, “you are ever welcome to our home, that you are. I suspect that once again you have come because of Shinomori-sama, but take what you time you need to think things through. You are never an inconvenience.”

Tears welled up in Misao’s eyes and she impulsively threw her arms around Kenshin, “Oh, thank you, Himura!”

Kenshin smiled and patted her gently on the back, before extricating himself. “Come now, Kaoru is waiting.
