Chapter 5
Heavily AU version of book 10
Jill sighed, Leon had been making little sense back at the shop, she hoped her phone call would help. “Leon Orcot.” It surprised her that he answered so soon.
“Leon, I have someone I want you to meet, shall I bring him to the shop?”
“No, D will wonder who his is, go to the coffee shop around the corner.” She acknowledged him and hung up. Turning to the man beside her she nodded and led him out of the door.
A hour later a very tired looking Leon sat before Jill. “Damn Leon, you look like shit.”
“I fucking feel like it too, try not sleeping for 3 days and see how you look.”
“Well Leon I’d like you meet Agent Howell from the FBI. He has been investigating Count D for many years.” Leon looked over the man sat beside Jill, he was wiry with a hard look to his face. “Hello Detective Orcot, I am trying to track down the Count and I was told you were investigating him.”
“I might be able to arrange something, if it is him.”
“I believe I met the Count many years ago when I was at University in Albany, He stood out from the usual crowd of students preferring to bury himself in research away from people. He was in a genetic engineering program passing himself off as a exchange student. He made great advances in the field but published it all under his teachers name. The one thing I remember is the way in spoke about mankind saying that what we don’t understand we label as monster and slaughter it into oblivion. He make the human race seem like something to be studied like he didn’t belong.” Leon nodded thoughtfully. “Well one day he was simply gone. I graduated and joined the bureau shortly after then I began to hear reports of a pet shop which sold animals that killed their owners or that the owners had strange accidents run by a man of Asian decent called Count D. I read the file you have on him back at the office apart from the amazing amount of typos there is little information on the Count himself and it seems your investigation has slowed to a stop in the last few months.” Leon nodded.
“I’ve been busy, other things on my mind so to speak.” The Agent frowned.
“Well, I need your help now, I’ve heard that the Count is still in this area and I need to track him down. Would you help me Leon? A introduction from you would help me get close without causing suspicion.” Leon eyed the man warily, something didn’t feel right. “Let me just speak with Detective Freshney before we confirm anything.” Jill nodded at Leon, she looked as uneasy as he felt. The Agent stood. “I’ll get us some more coffee then.”
They waited until he was out of hearing range before either one spoke. “I don’t trust him Jill, it’s just too fucking useful for him to turn up right now.” Jill frowned but nodded. “I think he means to destroy the D he met which I’m certain is the Count but perhaps a relation, maybe someone has fed him information.” Leon sighed and looked at the Agent who was talking to the girl behind the counter. “I’ll talk to D and see if I can find out where his D might be hiding, I may take him along if I have to or I’ll check it out first. Whatever I’m not taking him to meet D or he’ll go apeshit.” Leon pursed his lips and ran a hand through his hair, wincing as he did. “Still hurting you?” Jill nodded toward his still bound hand, Leon nodded and opened his mouth to reply when Jill hushed him. “See if this address rings a bell with the Count, it was the last firm sighting of that phoney nurse who came visiting.” Leon just had time to put the slip of paper away before Agent Howell returned.
They had agreed by the end of the conversation to met the next day at the same place, Leon wondered who would be there. Opening the door to the shop Leon saw T-Chan sprawled across one of the settees flicking through a book. “Hey Leon, he’s in the bedroom.”
“Thanks.” Leon said absent-mindly not really noticing what had just happened. As he walked into the room D looked up from making the bed. “Did you have a good time with Miss Jill?”
“Fine, how did you know?” D smiled enigmatically.
“I know what happens in my shop. Is Miss Jill well?”
“Good, she gave me a lead on the nurse I shot.” He handed the slip of paper to D whose eyes widened slightly as he read the address. “How did you get this Leon? It’s my father’s last known address.” Leon nodded grimly.
“Everything is leading to that fucker.” Leon swept D into his arm kissing him passionately. “Lets forgot about it for now, I just need to rest and enjoy some time with you.”
