Pruning

Everyone from the investigatory team communed inside the main hall before going into the computer room. Light and L weren\'t there but that was normal, Light was either off being with Misa or already in there. L never seemed to leave at all. You could only imagine their shock when they walked in.

L wasn\'t there.

"Finally he sleeps!" Matsuda exclaimed but he was scowled at by the chief, who then realized something strange. The door to the notebook\'s secure place was open. The chief turned around, his eyes squinting and full of fire.

"Find Ryuuzaki! The notebook is missing!" With that, they all ran seperate ways. A half hour later it was determined that L, Watari, and the notebook was missing. No notes or hints of what happened were found and furthermore they found all the cameras in the building and outside of it were gone. The only relief they found was in the fact that all the data on the computers was still in contact. They sat around on the couches, staring at each other. They had tried to call Light but there was no answer, which immediately raised suspicion with some of the people on the job. Chief Yagami looked as if he worried about his son, Matsuda was trying to be optimistic, Aizawa and Ide looked they were angry but had somehow expected it to come to this.

"Maybe someone stole it while he was sleeping and so he went to get it back!" Matsuda tried to say with hope. However, the others told him he would have left a message. He had said quite a few of these since the first ones and they all had been rebutted. Except the last few, that had been completely ignored. He was aware of this because his last one had been a test to see if anyone was even paying attention anymore. "Maybe Light and L have fallen completely in love, while Light is really Kira and L is the second Kira. They ran off together on a remote island to rule the world." No response.

A handful of emotions burst through the group as a very hungover Light walked through the doors. A spectrum of different facial expressions greeted with him and the only reply he could come up was "What?" while holding his head delicately by the temples.

"L and the notebook are missing!" Matsuda burst out with less eloquence than an illiterate drunk off his feet. This, however, was all it needed for Light to become fully alert. He repeated his previous statement, however this time it came out more of a scream. It was quite scary, really. Matsuda practically hid behind Kira\'s father.

This is bad. Many things dawned onto Light at once and none of them were good for his situation. He listed them all in his head. I can\'t seduce him. He has that very important notebook. I don\'t know his name. He knows mine. He suspects me of being Kira. I\'m going to miss him. He might kill me. He hardly realized that second to last one had crossed through his mind. He put on a feint expression. "He... He..." He began, acting entirely. "He thinks I\'m Kira... If he has the notebook, he can kill me! He\'ll think he\'s doing the world a favor..." Something told Light within that this was very unlikely but it seemed like the best way to make the group cooperate. Then he switched. "Or, or he is Kira!"

"No, I think he would have gotten rid of all the data if that were so." The chief said, trying to remain calm. He didn\'t remark on the fact that his son was in potential danger.

From there, they began a study. Half of them, including Light, worked on finding out where L had gone to while the other half continued with the normal research on Kira. Light was bright and quick with his wits but never had his head gone as fast as now. This act was the most unexpected thing ever to the fac that it could almost be considered random. Yet he knew L\'s mannerisms enough to know that L hadn\'t just up and left because he had a strange urge to. There was a thought process to it, a plan. What are you doing, Ryuuzaki? He sighed, trying to find a lead to the detective\'s whereabouts.

Rectangular glasses with thin black frames stood out darkly against pale skin and dark eyes. Ebony hair was tied back into a very pathetic attempt at a pony tail, though it had been slicked back as much as possible. A white shirt and jeans had been replaced by a pinstripe business suite. He wore shoes. He even wore socks. The thing that showed most, however, was his frown. He was not liking this look. He felt unnatural. L knew that if someone who knew him saw him, they could still probably point him out if they saw him straight on - however he was walking straight so he doubted anyone could pick him out of a crowd without looking at his face head on. Rem followed him closely, clearly thinking the situation unpleasant. It had been thirteen hours and fourty two minutes since he had stolen the notebook and Ren had been talking the entire time. He knew the situation. Finally, he replied. "I know you wish you could watch over Misa and truthfully, you have my allowance to do so if you rather. However, she is safe. You said you will kill Light if he tries to kill her - however if he tries to and you tell me, I will do it for you. Misa may be the second Kira but she is still just acting because Light tells her so. In a way, she is brainwashed." He had been holding a phone to his ear in a painfully normal way while doing this as to not cause alarm that he was talking to himself. Nobody was listening to what he was saying however. He stepped onto a plane.

He had drove his own way from Tokyo to Tottori, taking the longest way possible. Then he flew via helicopter, again driving himself, to Nagasaki. He was now boarding a plane to leave the country. Watari was not with him. He had instructed Watari to go back to Whammy\'s House and find the most suitable successor to L. He wasn\'t really sure his longterm goal but he knew that it was likely he was either going to die or at least be in hiding. Rem seemed more at ease, or as much as she ever did. "So I can go then?"

"Yes, you can do as you please. Just one more thing, is there anything I should know about the book that you haven\'t told me?"

Rem thought for a moment. She wasn\'t supposed to take sides but at the same time, through him she could rely on both it\'s own and Misa\'s safety. Rem owed something to this mysterious being. "The last two rules are false. Unless you wish to know more about killing techniques, there really is nothing further for me to tell you." L nodded and Rem left through the side of the lifting off plane. He closed his eyes, recalling the last two rules. The one concerning the death of you if you hurt the book and the one where if you don\'t write names in the book you will die. This, if he had not already been sure Light was Kira a full hundred percent, would have clarified that. He sighed, his eyes still closed. As if exhaling and closing his eyes would wipe away all this from his life. However it did not and the only thing it accomplished was a thought that Light\'s face was burnt into his eyelids. It felt like every mile he ran away from Light, the more his stomach was falling to pieces. It currently felt like swiss cheese so full of holes one wondered how it held together. He hated to admit it but it was apparent that he had fallen harder than he thought he would have when L made the realization that physical contact meant emotional attachment. He had been setting himself in a normal situation where a regular guy and girl would be together. However, he had not taken into account some very important details. First of all, nothing is normal where Kira or L are concerned, much less both of them. The second realization the detective had to admit was that he had never had much contact. It certainly wasn\'t his first kiss, there had been girls who had kissed him when he was a child, but it had been the first time anything had happened like that. The correct word was passion but L denied his brain access to it. Yet all that was really important was the fact that he was undeniably unable to think of anything but \'what if\' situations. He stared blankly in front of him, his fake glasses slipping their way idly down his nose.

I\'m willing to give my life to stop Kira yet I\'m not willing to give his unless I have to. I\'m willing to let my heart break for the safety of criminals while they wait to die or until they can commit another crime... It actually began to sound like he was starting to support Kira but he was not really. In truth, his mind was tired. Not from lack of sleep ut from lack of anything to do but plan his next move and reminisce. And wish. He closed his eyes, feeling darkness wash over him. If I\'m going to imagine, I might as well... "Dream."

Fufa\'s Notes:

Okay, I know, short chapter that took far too long to write. Furthermore, it\'s basically just information on what all is happening.

At work, I cut my finger. If you haven\'t guessed, I\'m prone to injury. Makes typing slightly painful. :D Hope you like the chapter anyways.
