White Socks

5. White Socks

Shuichi was sleeping soundly. Yuki gently kissed him before getting up out of bed and showering. Last night, his lover had been attached by some punks at a blues club, freaked out, and been brought home by his friends. Yuki had talked Shuichi out of his terrors and pain, and somehow it had turned into one of their most intense nights of loving and fucking they’d ever had.

He hadn’t thought anything could be more intense that the day after he’d won that bet from Tohma to not have any sort of sex or sexual touch with Shuichi for two fucking weeks. But actually those two weeks had drained them both so much, they’d slept as much as fucked after that initial furious coupling in the limo and another bout in their bed. It was too bad he had a meeting with his editor this morning, but at least he could give her another chapter.

Shuichi was still sleeping as Yuki dressed, looking adorable with his mouth open and drooling. God, he was really in love if someone drooling looked adorable to him. That made him a bit grumpy as he drank his first cup of coffee and smoked the first cigarette of the day. A fucking, rainy cold morning. Depressing as all hell. Damn, Shu would have to work on that blues song again today, too. He didn’t want him waking up alone and not being able to fight off fear and dark feelings. Yuki ground out his cigarette and called Hiro, his lover’s best friend. Shit, he was going to owe the redhead a lot of favors!

Yuki spent the time waiting for Hiro to come over to the apartment getting ready for his meeting with his editor, packing his laptop and papers. But that only took a short while. Restless, he went in and watched Shuichi sleeping—he was snoring lightly now, the blankets wrapped tightly around him as if he was cold. He looked so young, so small. All he needed to look like a child was a stuffed animal. Shu had a number in his private room—a messy place full of all sorts of silly things, plastered with images on the wall, a treasure trove of music cds and dvds, as well as other memorabilia. Yuki never went in there unless Shu dragged him in there. But this morning, he went in and grabbed a stuffed monkey and lion randomly. When he set them on the bed, he smiled as the novelist in him recognized he’d subconsciously chosen two animals symbolic of each of them. He put them close to Shuichi, where he would see them when he awoke.

He looked at his watch—Hiro would be here soon. He sat down on the bed and stroked Shu’s pink hair softly. He stirred and those violet eyes opened a bit. “Y-Yuki?”

“Good morning, brat. How are you this morning?”

“Cold, so cold,” said Shuichi shivering. “Come back to bed and warm me up.”

“Can’t, meeting.”

Shu shivered, saying, “It’s so cold, Yuki.”

Yuki stood up and when into the bathroom, getting his small hairdryer. Back in the bedroom, he got a pair of his own thick white socks out of his dresser. He plugged the hairdryer in and said, “Stick your feet out, Shu.”

“No! It’s too cold!”

“Come on, baby,” coaxed Yuki, “You’ll love this. Just give me one foot.”

“Promise?”

“Promise,” said Yuki, and one small foot poked out from under the blankets. He turned on the hair dryer, blowing hot air on it, making Shuichi sigh with pleasure.

“Oh, Yuki, it feels so good, so good! I love you! You’re so good to me.”

Yuki didn’t say anything, but he smiled just a tiny bit as he tugged on one of the white socks. “Trade,” he said gruffly. The white sock disappeared under the quilt, and the second ice-cold foot got the same treatment.

Then with a slap on the part of the quilt covering Shu’s rump, Yuki got up, saying, “Go back to bed, brat. Hiro will be here when you wake up.”

But Shuichi was already sleeping again, an angelic look on his face. He’d grabbed the little stuffed lion and had his head pressed against it.

Yuki Eiri, the cold man with the gold eyes and blonde hair, the one who everyone said was cool, then did something so not cool. He took out his phone and snapped a picture of Shuichi sleeping like that with the little toy lion. Then angry with himself, he scowled and strode out of the bedroom.

He was so grumpy and curt with Hiro, that the red-headed guitarist was a little worried about his friend. He quietly crept down the hall to peek in the bedroom. But his best friend was sleeping soundly, a huge smile on his face, curled up with a stuffed lion in his arms. Ah, god, Shu was cute! He grinned, forgiving Yuki for being such a bastard.

Anyone that made his friend that happy couldn’t be all bad. Besides if he was Shu’s lover and had to leave him looking like that on a cold, rainy morning, he’d be grumpy as all hell too. Looking at Shu, he suddenly knew how the accompaniment to “Lover’s Blues” should go. Yes, that would work! Hiro gently shut the door and headed back to Yuki and Shu’s kitchen to drink coffee and write music.

On a dark, rainy morning like this, confronted by a love he didn’t share, a love he envied, it was easy to write the blues.
