Chapter 5
It took only a moment for Tyki to register this, and only a moment longer for the fourteenth to target and aim a blow right at his chest, using brute strength to send the unguarded Noah flying. Not letting the surprise of the blow give the fourteenth any more advantages, Tyki flowed through the wall of one room effortlessly and landed hard in the next room on the floor. Getting to his feet a bit awkwardly, he stood in the empty room and looked through the doorway where he saw the possessed boy get up off the couch and race to the doorway. It grinned devilishly at him and the look wasn’t natural on Allen’s face. Where did that face that was full of love and hope disappear? “Good morning…Tyki Mikk…”
Tyki glared as the voice coming from Allen’s throat trudged on the air. Distorted and low, even it had lost the hopeful and strong tone that Allen’s normally possessed. Just the sound of it made Tyki’s chest throb, and made his scars ache. Shifting a little, he growled out, “You’re not supposed to be out. That body doesn’t belong to you.”
“Oh, were you hoping that Allen would still be conscious?” The fourteenth asked and laughed back at him. “That precious Exorcist that you love so much?”
The fourteenth entered the room and Tyki backed up, turning slightly as they both angled and rotated in a circle, not turning their backs to each other and give even the slightest bit of vulnerability. Tyki, though, couldn’t help but falter at the comment. Anger flared up inside of him and he stared long and hard at the familiar face that was being twisted into such an ugly way that it was beginning to not even resemble its former profile. “I never said I loved that Exorcist.”
“Don’t lie, Tyki Mikk, I know what you feel for him…” he sneered and the innocence flared, transforming into that weapon that made the Noah tremble. “You don’t hide it well, you know…”
Tyki frowned even more and brought his shields out, feeling their familiar pressure against his wrists. I don’t want to hurt Allen, if I don’t have to…he thought, bracing himself as he waited for something to happen. While he stalled, he geared the conversation in a different direction, towards the fourteenth. “I wonder, if it’s not as easy to point out as your cowardice is. You’d take shelter inside an unknowing target, who was the closest to Mana?”
The Earl had spoken of Mana and the fourteenth before, so that all the Noahs would be informed and ready when they faced him. He watched as the possessed boy trembled a moment then glared at him. “It’s not cowardice, it’s being innovative…”
Laughing at the retort while his mind raced for a way to bring Allen back, he rotated towards the left a little more, watching the fourteenth mimic him step for step. “It’s a really funny way to be innovative, especially when the person is being hurt for your benefit.”
“Well you should know all about that, Tyki Mikk…no, third disciple, Joyd…Noah of Pleasure.”
Tyki’s grin didn’t falter. “That’s right, I do know all about it…”
“Then you should know all about the brilliance of it!” The fourteenth interrupted, laughing as he dashed forward, left arm raised and poised to attack Tyki. Reacting immediately, Tyki brought the shields up and braced himself. He couldn’t avoid the innocence by simply using his power, and he knew the shields weren’t going to hold, and so he had to think of a way to avoid it without hurting Allen. There was a feeling he felt in the pit of his stomach that told him that may not be possible. As the innocence collided with his shields, they held and Tyki was pushed back towards the wall until he hit it hard. It wasn’t until then, that the shields broke and the fingers of Allen’s arms spread, holding Tyki in position against the wall with his palm. With a satisfactory smile, the fourteenth seemed to loom over him and grin as it held him in place. “What’s wrong, Tyki Mikk? Are you afraid of hurting this little exorcist? I expected the Noahs to be stronger, but maybe the Earl has been too soft on all of you.”
“The only one he’s gone soft on is Road, his favorite…” Tyki spat back and his mind raced as he tried to think. He couldn’t falter now, because if he did, then not only would he lose to the fourteenth, but that small and young face of Allen’s would forever be twisted into that ugly grin, that ugly face of revulsion and anger that just didn’t fit. Something came to his mind, and he began sinking back into the wall. If he couldn’t avoid the innocence, perhaps he could work the innocence with his own power and make it follow him. He saw the fingers beginning to melt with him and smiled at the look on the fourteenth’s face. Melding completely, Tyki found himself on the other side and breathed a sigh of relief. The wrist of the hand jerked and twitched as it was stuck in the wall, limiting the mobility of the hand. A few cracks appeared around it and as he melded to the other side, he saw the fourteenth struggling to free his arm.
“What-?!” He started, but was cut off when Tyki shoved his body to the wall, pinning the other hand behind his back and limiting his mobility even more and making it near impossible to free his arm. Struggling, the fourteenth cursed and swore at him over and over again. The jerking of his left arm began to make the wall crumble badly and Tyki quickly pulled the arm out, swinging it around behind him where he held fast. The feeling of the innocence in his hand made the Noah in him roar to life, but he grit his teeth against it and swung him around, smashing his body into the wall and pressing him into it. The fourteenth let out a cry as his head hit the wall with a sickening thud and his breathing became heavy. He looked back at Tyki with a dazed, but enraged look in his eyes.
“Not so tough now, are you?” Tyki said with a grin. “Did that knock to the head maybe put some sense into you?”
The fourteenth growled again and tried pushing back, but the way his head hit the wall caused him to become disorientated, and he found he couldn’t think straight enough to move his body the way he wanted to. His eyes rolled back into his head and he muttered something under his breath. There was a flicker of his eyes and suddenly, the body relaxed. It caught Tyki by surprise so much that as the innocence deactivated and the body went limp, he almost didn’t have time to catch him. Looking with a bit of surprise, he watched Allen’s face and half expected it to be still, but after a moment, his features twitched and Tyki couldn’t help the sigh of relief that escaped him. Taking the boy with him, he went back to the old sofa and carefully laid down his naked form, wondering if he should dress him or not. Either way, I have to leave, Tyki thought quickly, looking around the room and noticing that the amount of light filtering in through the windows had grown considerably, and if I just leave him here, there’s no telling what the Earl might do to him…Quickly, Tyki searched for his clothes, which had been tossed onto the floor before and began dressing him, only putting his shirt and pants on then wrapping him in his cloak before straightening his own clothing and picking up the small exorcist.
Leaving out the back of the house, he began heading for the air, high above where the unsuspecting early risers in the town below couldn’t seem them clearly. Hurrying along, Tyki took one last glance in the direction of where the mansion stood before turning back again and pushing his entire strength into getting away. There was no turning back. Tyki’s only family left now was there, in that mansion, and he had no right to be taken back into their arms after what he did. The torn feeling he felt inside was enough to make him want to cry, but he couldn’t find the tears inside to do so. The Earl might find him someday for his betrayal, and even tell Jasdevi, Road, and Cyril of what he’d done. He was a dead man, unless he kept running. It was all he could do now.
Early morning turned to early afternoon, and he was still running. Allen still hadn’t woken up either, and Tyki was wondering if he was really all right. Soon, it was late afternoon and Tyki finally stopped. They were in the woods, outside of France somewhere as far as the Noah could tell. He set Allen down against a tree and sat next to him cross-legged while watching him for a moment. He looked away, down at the grass underneath him. He had nothing more to do than wait. Tyki hated every second of it.
He wasn’t a very patient person sometimes, but in this matter, he forced himself to be so. It wouldn’t accomplish anything to be impatient with the sleeping boy since he really couldn’t do anything to help him wake up. Turning around, he leaned against the trunk of the tree with the boy and stared out through the trees, his thoughts clouding out a bit. He tried to not think about it. There was too much pain in remembering what he’d done and he put his head into his hands. Tyki stayed like that, motionless for a long time and he vaguely wondered if he dozed a little. By the time he looked up again at the sound of Allen’s body stirring, it was dark out. Looking over at Allen, he watched him look around a moment before whispering, “Did you sleep well, boy?”
Allen looked at Tyki a moment then put a hand to his head. Tyki guessed that it was really hurting him. “Where are we?”
“Outside France somewhere I’d guess. I’m not sure exactly.” Tyki reached into his pocket for a cigarette, out of habit, but found non. He sighed to himself idly as he leaned back against the tree again. “I was sort of running whichever way I happened to be facing…”
“Running…?” Allen didn’t understand what he meant. “Why were we running?”
Tyki couldn’t help but grin. “That fourteenth did a number on you eh?”
At the mention of the parasite, Allen frowned and looked down, guessing as much what had happened. “I see…”
“Do you feel up to traveling?” Tyki asked him softly, watching him with a careful gaze.
“Yeah, I’m just a little dizzy…” Allen replied.
Tyki stood and looked down at Allen. “Good. Go to the Order as soon as you can.” He turned without another word and started walking away. Immediately, his hand was taken hold of and he looked back at Allen wide-eyed. Allen’s face was struck with a look of confusion and a bit of horror. “What?”
Allen swallowed hard, but not the kind that showed nervousness. He must have been thirsty. After he found his voice, he answered with another question. “Are you going back?”
Tyki looked away from Allen and pulled his hand back as well. “No. I don’t plan on it…”
“Then where are you going?”
This boy was so persistent. Tyki looked back at him and fixed a cold stare on him, hoping it would deter him from asking any more questions. “That is not your concern, boy. Go back to the Order, they’ll be worried about you being away for almost two days now…”
Allen paused a minute and drew the cloak around himself more as a gust of wind blew by. “So you’re running away? Why?”
The Noah couldn’t help the laugh that came from his mouth. “Running away? Sure that’s what I’m doing…but only because I have no other choice.”
“Surely you have a choice, Tyki.”
“I don’t, boy.” Tyki heaved a weary sigh and looked at him. “I was forced to forsake everything as a human to become a Noah, and now I’ve forsaken everything as a Noah to become nothing. The Earl and the others were the closest I had to having a family. I can’t face them again…”
Allen nodded and after a moment, began walking away without a word. It was such a cold farewell that Tyki wondered if it was Allen’s way of giving up and letting go. If so, it was a rather painful way of going through it. It was lacking. It struck something deep inside of Tyki so hard; he almost reeled physically at the feeling. How can we just leave it like that…he thought. Tyki couldn’t stop himself as he reached out and grabbed Allen’s shoulders, pulling him in. He held Allen and buried his face into his neck, breathing deeply at the scent of the exorcist. This would be the last time he ever saw him. He had to memorize him the best he could.
“If I am reborn as a human,” He whispered to him. “I’d like to see you again…”
Before Allen could turn and look at him, Tyki had already turned and ran.
~~~
“I heard there was someone’s murdering in town again…”
“Yeah, I know. Some people keep saying it was some akuma.” The voices in the pub floated all around. Rumors bouncing off of truths, overpowering or just washing away with the tide rang out as they did in such places.
“There’s no way! The akuma have long since disappeared, everyone knows that…”
“Well, they were around for so long and caused so much trouble, I wouldn’t be surprised if some people still watched their backs…”
Tyki got up and went to pay his tab. He was tired of these rumors and these talks of akuma. They were gone, so why was everyone still skittish? After paying for his meal, he decided to go to the shopping district. He needed groceries for tomorrow’s dinner. As he left, he lit a cigarette and took slow and relaxed drags of it. Cigarettes were worth a bitch and a half nowadays so he had to make each one count. He finished it off before going into the store and began picking out his foods. Potatoes. Steak. Carrots. Just simple foods that only needed a little bit of seasoning to make. It didn’t look like much of a meal, but Tyki didn’t have much to cook for nowadays. Just so long as he was fed he was all right. Paying for his groceries, he spotted a young man nearby. He was only in his twenties or so and his height nearly matched that of Tyki’s, but what caused his eyes to fall upon the youth was the strange color of his hair. White. Tyki was hit with a sense of déjà vu and it was so strong and powerful, that he could only stare for a moment. His image was so similar to one he had known before. So familiar, Tyki tried to think of where he’d seen it before. The young man turned towards him.
Realizing what he was doing, he quickly turned his attention back to receiving his change and picked up his bags, heading for the door. In this day and age, you never saw a young man with white hair. At least, not without looking thoroughly. Tyki lit a cigarette as he began to walk and he dwelled on the familiar feeling that ran through him at the sight of the boy. Sighing to himself, he ran his fingers through his cropped hair that didn’t fall below his ears. He tried to forget about it. It wasn’t any of his business anyways. Continuing along his way, it didn’t take Tyki long to get to his home that was about a mile away. Though a seemingly long walk, it was easy enough for Tyki and it was easier to walk than to waste money on transportation for what seemed to him like such a short distance. As he climbed the steps to his home, he felt a strange sensation going up his spine like someone was watching him. He turned and glanced around, his eyes falling on a young man walking down the sidewalk. White hair and a cloak. The hair was on the long side, more around his shoulders than anything. As he looked up at Tyki, it fell back to reveal a long and red scar coming from his forehead to about his chin. So familiar. Tyki couldn’t help but cringe with the familiarity of it. Why can’t I place him?!
“Tyki Mikk…” The voice was deep, but had a very youthful ring to it. The boy began climbing the steps towards him.
“Do I know you?” He asked indignantly. Being a man who liked his mere existence and the solitude that followed it, he was a bit wary of this young man now.
He smiled. Young and vibrant, the look of it sent a thrill through Tyki and he watched his face. “It’s been a while…you’re hair is shorter than I last remember. Much shorter…”
Something inside of him awoke. He couldn’t quite figure where it came from, but it roared to life inside and consumed him in its grip. What was this tightening feeling in his chest? It wound up inside of his chest, constricting around his every being. Breathing deeply, he stared at this boy. Who was he? Who was he? Who was he?! The boy smiled.
“Have you been reborn, Tyki?”
It snapped.
It all snapped, and wonderful and fresh realization flooded into an otherwise bleak world.
“Allen…”
