Chapter 5 -- Father
"ZOICITE!!!!!"
That made all of us stop and raise our heads. No one was in the room, we knew that much, and the room had been sealed and soundproofed, so no one could’ve gotten in or heard us. But where had that cry come from? Realization flashed in my head and my heart dropped to my stomach, recognizing my mother’s voice.
“Mother!” I cried. The eyes of the other two men widened, realizing that it was indeed the voice of Queen Alaura. Something was very wrong, as she was the only one who could break through my mental defenses to speak directly to me. “Mother, what’s wrong?”
“Come quickly, Son, please!” she said, almost frantic. “Your father is… You are the new king of…”
“NO!” I screamed. “FATHER!” Getting off the bed, I snapped my fingers and was instantly dressed, running out the door toward the palace, not waiting for Kunzite and Endymion to follow me. Not too far behind me, I could hear their boots pounding along the sidewalk as they followed me, trying to keep up. Seeing the three of us running alerted many of the palace guards that something was wrong, and so as soon as we passed them, they would fall in and run behind us. Following my mother’s energy signal to the throne room, the sight I saw when I got there was absolutely the last thing I expected to see. My father and brother both lay on the ground, crossbow bolts in their chests. My brother’s wife Sateen was there, weeping over her husband and holding tightly to their son, who was not old enough yet to understand what was going on. I screamed, dropping to my knees next to my father’s body. Before I could touch him, Kunzite pulled me into his arms and held me as I sobbed. “Father! FATHER!!!”
“When was this discovered?” Endymion said to one of the guards.
“We were all here when it happened,” he said.
“You let this happen?” I growled. “YOU LET THIS HAPPEN!? YOU LET MY FATHER AND BROTHER DIE?! What else are you going to tell me, that you put yourself in the way of the arrows!? If that were the case, at least one of you would be dead instead of them!”
“Your Majesty, please, calm yourself,” Mother said, and my breath hitched at the use of my new title. She was doing everything in her power to remain calm, and my outburst wasn’t helping her any. Kunzite held me tighter, pulling my head to rest on his chest, and Endymion put his hand on my shoulder.
“Long live the King!” Endymion called, and everyone repeated it. “Long live the King!”
“Kings,” Mother corrected. “There are two kings now. My son, King Zoicite and his consort, King Kunzite, now rule this great planet.”
“Majesty, with great respect, I do not wish to take over the rule of this great planet while you live, even when Kunzite is crowned.” Kunzite said, and Mother smiled.
“It is the way of this kingdom that, when the king dies, his queen relinquishes her throne to the consort of the heir unless the new king does not have one yet,” she said. “I will always been the queen, but you are the rightful ruler alongside King Zoicite, and will be named as such.”
“Thank you, My Queen,” he said softly. I couldn’t speak, and I couldn’t stop crying. “There, there, my love.” Kunzite brushed his hand through my hair, using the other to rub my back, trying to soothe me. “It’s going to be all right. It’s going to be just fine, Zoiite. Hush, please. You have to be strong.”
“I don’t want to be strong,” I whimpered. “I don’t want to be king yet, either. Father is the king, not me. Father was… FATHER!!!!” I screamed again, trying to pull out of Kunzite’s embrace and throw myself over my father’s body, but Kunzite’s strong arms held me firm against him. “FATHER! FATHER! No, no, no!”
“Can’t you do something for him, Kunzite-sama?” Endymion asked, and I realized that he was crying too. He knelt next to us, throwing his arms around me and holding me, and I realized that both he and Kunzite were shaking. Almost as soon as I looked up at Kunzite, he placed his hands in front of my eyes, and I felt a warm sensation cross into my head, and I lost consciousness.
-- Kunzite’s POV –
“That wasn’t exactly what I expected you to do,” Endymion said softly as he helped me carry Zoicite toward his old bedroom, lifting his head as I supported most of the weight of his body.
“He needs to get some rest,” I said softly. “King Hermes’ death is obviously a huge blow to his system, and the pressure of being the king is going to take a heavy impact on his entire life.”
“I know that, of course, but I expected you to give him something to simply calm him and help him to take charge,” he said. “You know what will be expected of him when they find the ones who did this.”
“THAT, I don’t think he will have a problem with, Endymion,” I said. “I know that I wouldn’t mind killing them myself if given the chance. What I’m concerned about is the fact that he was away from royal life for so long and he hasn’t quite gotten back into the way of life yet.”
“Well, Majesty, I mean no disrespect to him, but perhaps you will serve better as the decision-maker until he is finally ready to take on the responsibility,” Endymion said. I looked at him, and while part of me wanted to be angry at him, another part of me realized that he was right. Zoicite simply wasn’t ready to rule. After we had placed Zoicite on the bed, we met at the foot of the bed. He was slightly shorter than me, which made it easy for me to kiss his forehead. “If Zoicite approves, I will make you the captain of our guard until you yourself become a king.”
“For everyone’s sake, I hope that I don’t become a King of Earth for a very long time,” he said, and I moved a bit closer to him. “Kunzite-sama…”
“How close were you?” I whispered into his ear, allowing my breath to tickle his ear. “Before this happened, how close were you to coming?”
“I’m not sure this is a…”
“Answer your king,” I said sternly, but quietly as I lightly nipped on his ear.
“I would’ve lasted less than a minute longer had we not been called away,” he said, panting again as I placed my hand on his hip, kneading at an area of his waist with my fingers that I had discovered was quite sensitive. “But, my king, I do not think this is an appropriate time to be doing this kind of thing, especially when such a tragedy has occurred, and… and when King Zoicite cannot join in the enjoyment.” Unfortunately, I knew he was right. I placed a quick kiss on his lips, which he did smile against, but it was short-lived.
“Stay here with Zoicite until I return,” I said. “I need to go and see to the needs of Queen Amiya.” He nodded, turning to sit with Zoicite on the bed. “It might be a good idea for you to take him in your arms on the bed, Endymion. When he wakes up, he may be contented if you are holding him.” He nodded, moving to rest his back against the headboard while I moved Zoicite to lay propped up against Endymion’s chest. Zoicite moaned lightly as he was jostling around, but thankfully he stayed asleep. I brushed my hand through his bangs and kissed him briefly before withdrawing and walking out of the room.
