Hakkai blinked slowly up at Rei, who was leaning over him and looking more than a little bit worried.
“Oh thank the gods, you're all right,” she said, sounding relieved.
“Yes, why wouldn't I be,” he said, struggling to sit up only to have his head spin wildly. He flopped back down again. “What happened?”
“My sisters' and your brothers in arms' idea of matchmaking,” Rei said, sounding very far removed from amused.
“I see. Why does my head feel like a child's top?”
“That would be the side effects of the belladonna. Youkai have different reactions than humans do to it.”
“Ah,” he said, trying to sit up again before thinking better of it. “I believe I'll just lie here for a few minutes.”
“Sorry. The dizziness is one of the side effects,” she shrugged and shifted to he could put his head in her lap.
“I'm not certain how I feel about your sisters drugging me,” Hakkai mused. He was starting to feel oddly warm and very talkative.
“I know exactly how I feel about it,” Rei grumbled, running her fingers through Hakkai's hair and watching him closely for any of the other signs demons usually manifested under the influence of belladonna. “Annoyed as all hell.”
“You're beautiful when you're annoyed though,” he pointed out. The oddest look came over his face as he glanced up at her. “I said that out loud, didn't I.”
“I'm afraid so,” she said. “Another one of the side effects.”
He looked absolutely terrified. “I take it that means anything that comes into my mind is coming out of my mouth.”
“Possibly mortifying but true,” she said. “Belladonna on youkai acts much like certain truth serums on humans. Plus it makes them inclined to babble. The last time Xan tried it on Ming I ended up hearing ALL about certain exploits when he was younger that I would have preferred not knowing.”
Hakkai chuckled weakly. “Does that mean I might tell you I think I'm in love with you, even if I'm not certain of it myself?”
“Considering you just did, I'd say the answer to that is a yes,” she said. “I'm really sorry about this, Hakkai.”
“No. I think this might be a good thing,” he said musingly. “It's difficult for me to speak about certain things as I'm sure you've gathered. Especially when it concerns the subject of love. I didn't want to love anyone again after Kanan. I didn't think I would have it in me to give my heart over to anyone's care after what happened. Some part of me certainly knew I was being ridiculous or at least hoped I was. But I never found anyone I even had the slightest glimmer of interest in romantically. Until you.”
“I'm honored, Hakkai, truly and deeply,” she said.
“Honored but are you interested?” he asked, reaching up to toy with a piece of her hair.
“You already know the answer to that. If I wasn't interested I'd be across the room instead of in this bed with you.”

Mai slid into the chair next to Sanzo, peering at the paper over his shoulder for a moment before he turned to glare at her.
“Oh, stop being all pissy,” she said. “I've got news you'll want to hear.”
“Unless it's news that the pass is finally clear, I don't care,” he said, taking a drag on his cigarette.
“Ask and you shall receive, that's what it happens to be. Earlier than expected but . . .”
“Fabulous. Now we can leave so three out of the four of us can stop acting like lovesick teenagers,” he said.
“Wow, bitter much?” Mai said. “You sound jealous.”
He snorted. “Hardly. If they want to be stupid, that's up to them. I just want to get out of here, finish what needs to be finished and go on about my life.”
“And what kind of life would that be, your priestieness? Ignoring your calling, giving the other monks heartfailure on a regular basis. Trying to prove something to someone who's long gone?”
In less than a second, the gun was drawn on her. “Never . . . say that again,” he snarled.
She shoved his hand away. “Never say what again? The truth? What do you have as far as a life is concerned when your mission is over, Koryu? At least Hakkai, Gojyo and Goku have something to live FOR when it's over.”
“You couldn't possibly understand, you're still a child,” he said, turning away from her.
“Chronologically, yes. But you and I are kindred in more ways than you could ever imagine,” she said, spinning on her heel and going back into the kitchen.
Sanzo shook his head and went up the stairs to Gojyo's room, without bothering to knock he flung the door open and walked in. Gojyo had his back to the door, seated in a big armchair facing the window.
“Pass is clear, we're leaving tomorrow.,” he announced. He turned and left the room but not before he saw Xan's hand shoot him the bird from the other side of the chair.
