Chapter Five:


Misato followed the medics with the two children. \"I\'ll give you updates as soon as they\'re stable. Kaji, could you take Shinji and Asuka home?\"

The green-haired man nodded. \"As soon as they\'re done, I\'ll drive them there, and wait until I hear from you.\"

ouldould I send a medic there?\" Fuyutsuki asked, not caring if Kaji was nearby.

Gendo sighed. \"I don\'t think it\'s as bad...but it happened at the exact moment..if not before...\"

Alexia\'s eyes opened again, this time they were normal. She saw the gun in Ikari\'s hand and whimpered, trying to get up to get away from him.

Ikari looked down at her, and sighed. \"Well, I see you\'re...aware again...\" He kept the gun in his hand, and motioned for her to stay where she was. \"I think we may move you off-base...at least for a short period of time...\"

Alexia nodded slightly, resting her head back on the floor. \"C..comander.... what happened... I... I remember watching the others and.... It felt like something was holding me.... It... commander... it hurt.... Like before...\" She allowed the few tears to fall.

\"Shall I arrange housing for her?\" Fuyutsuki asked, seeing everyone else was busy.

Shinji finished first, hardly dry, but dressed. He stumbled out, looking dazed and confused. Kaji caught him, and held him steady. \"I know it must be painful, not knowing what\'s happened...anyway, I\'m to take you and Asuka home.\"

Gendo nodded, and replied. \"Yes, see to it, please....This incident cannot be repeated..think what would happen if it had happened during an Angel attack?\"

Asuka came out dressed in her school uniform. \"Where were they taken?\" She asked, clearly worried. She looked to Shinji. \"Any word about me being worried about Wondergirl or the American and I hurt you.\"

\"I\'ll try to find suitable quarters for her.\"

Shinji nodded. \"I think to the infirmary...anyway, we\'re supposed to head home...wait until we get word...\" He sighed, trying to calm down again.

Ikari sighed. \"Thank you, Fuyutsuki...\" He put his gun away, and got back in his seat, wishing he had a good, stiff drink at momemoment.

\"Misato went with them. Don\'t worry.\" Ritsuko said as she finished collecting her gear and headed for the elevator.

Asuka nodded. \"Fine..\"

Kaji nodded. \"So, let\'s get going, shall we?\"

Asuka nodded. \"I call the passenger seat.\"

Shinji sighed. \"Whatever...\" he responded under his breath as they made their way to the lift. Kaji had his hands back in his pockets, looking for his keys for a moment, before finding them.

Fuyutsuki sighed searching for a suitable apartment for the other child. \"Sir, what\'s her condition now?\"

\"Stable, I believe...\" Ikari looked down at her. \"Can you walk?\" he asked simply, his shades concealing his eyes.

Misato waited in the lobby for the doctors to tell her what was going on. /No... I\'m not losing them.../ She thought, her hand touching the cross around her neck.

Alexia attempted to stand. She was shakey, but able to do it. She took a few steps and fell into a chair. \"I will need assistance.\"

Ikari nodded. \"Very well....rest. When you feel up to it, we will take you to your new home.\" He pressed the intercom button. \"Report, Fuyutsuki.\"
he ohe only apartment I can find within city limits is in the same building as the other children.\"

Gendo bit back a curse. \"So, we either risk everything...or keep her here, and risk the lives of two of our pilots...\"

Asuka sat in the passenger, seat worried.

Kaji turned on the radio, to calm both her and Shinji down. \"Don\'t worry....everything will be fine...it\'s probably just some mishap with the LCL....\" He came to a stop in front of the apartment complex, and ed sed slightly. \"So, have either of you had anything to eat OTHER than ice cream?\"

\"Sir... Maybe this was because the three of us are not close to each other... Some... something about the boy.... I..... it\'s hard to remember... I met the other American.... And.....\" Alexia shook her head.

Asuka shook her head, she had been so nervous all day she hadn\'t eaten lunch or breakfast.

Gendo regarded her. \"What do you mean? What about the American?\"

Shinji also shook his head, leaving Kaji to sigh. \"Well, I\'m no gourmet cookt I\t I\'m sure I can do better than curry...unless Shinji would like to make us dinner?\"

She shook her head. \"It\'s hard to think sir... I... it\'s like something\'s blocking it...\" Sookeooked up, the strain clear on her face.

\"As long as it\'s not Misato\'s cooking, I don\'t care.\"

Meanwhile, both Rei and Jack had stablized, with only the occasional twitch. The doctors all wore little smiles on their faces.

Misato saw one of them come out and looked hopeful.

Kaji laughed, and climbed out, closing his door, and making his way over to get Asuka\'s. Shinji just got out quietly, shut his, and headed for the stairs leading up to their apartment.

Asuka thanked him and followed, uncharacteristicly silent. \"You know he better be okay... I still have to hurt him for the stunt with the ice cream cone earlier.\"

\"As far as we can tell, they\'re both fine. At random intervals, they experience muscle spasms, but nothing more than that.\" The NERV physician said, smiling a bit. \"It\'s odd, though....\"

Kaji nodded, as Shinji opened the door with his set of keys as they reached the door. \"Well, we can only hope for the best.\"

\"What\'s odd?\"

Ritsuko looked over the information that was sent to her. \"This doesn\'t make sence... It\'s as if they both were reacting to a threat..\"

\"Well, it\'s odd that they have the spasms at the same times, in the same ways....For instance, when the First child experienced a right knee jerk...the Sixth Child mirrored it...and when the Sixth\'s hand would open and close, the First\'s reacted similarly...almost as if they were experiencing these \'twitches\' in perfect sync.\"

\"Can I see them?\" She asked.

The doctor nodded. \"Of course..this way..\" He motioned, allowing her to pass him.

She went to the room they were in.

Aoba, back in the main Command Center, hit his intercom. \"Hyuga...you there?\" There was a hiss of static, followed by the other tech\'s voice. \"Man, I hope you guys finish up soon...this is getting weird.\"

Rei and Jack were in separate beds, sleeping peacefully. Then Jack\'s arm suddenly flew out, smacking at the air. At the same time, there was a loud crash as Rei\'s arm mirrored the motion, smacking into a tray that had been next to her bed.

\"I\'m here. We\'re not reading anything strange here.\"

\"Oh yeah? Well, BOTH Rei and the new kid are in the infirmary....and this was from the sync test.\"

\"Synch test? That damage? NO way!\"

\"That\'s not all..they BOTH generated AT Fields...independent of EVA systems...the Sixth\'s plug was SHATTERED from the force of it, but Rei\'s had passed faster, leaving her more vulnerable.\" Aoba rubbed the bridge of his nose.

Hyoga sighed. \"What has Ikari had to say about it yet?\"

\"The commander? He wasn\'t even there...something else got him out of there, and he hasn\'t left his office since..\" He heard a yawn, and turned, spotting Ibuki sound asleep under one of the consoles, her head resting on a pink Hello Kitty pillow. \"I found \'Buki...\" he shook his head, grinning.

She looked up slightly. \"Some of us have been here since two am... gimme a break, Aoba...\" She grumbled slightly.

\"Bah...slacker,\" he retorted. \"I\'ve been up since twelve...deal with it.\" He tapped another few keys, and the video feed from the test came on. He paused it mid-way, and squinted. \"Hey, \'yoga...I can see it on the monitor...\" He indicated to Ibuki the shimmer of the AT Field around both Jack and Rei. \"Helluva introduction, huh?\"

She nodded. \"What of the other two plugs?\"

\"Shinji and Asuka were perfectly fine...well, as as as they ever are...no sign of damage, and no AT Field...it just happened with those two there...\" He played it again, raising the sound levels so the cracking of metal and plastics could be heard from Jack\'s plug.

Ibuki caught a blip in another part of the compound. \"There\'s another one in Ikari\'s office, much weaker though...

Aoba rubbed his chin. \"He WAS called back before the test..maybe it has a connection...let\'s see what other data we have on our Boy Wonder...\" He tapped a few more keys, and a loud alarm went off. \"AGH! What the Hell?! Priority Access? Jeesh...\'Buki, you have those codes over there? You wthe the last one to have them.\"

She looked at him. \"You get me a cup of coffee and I\'ll start to work on it.\"

He rolled his eyes. \"Tch..fine...I\'ll be back in a few.\" Aoba got up from his console, and made his way down the levels until he was jogging out the door, heading towards the nearest coffee vending machine. He slipped in a few coins, then put the styrofoam cup under it as it started to pour. He picked it up, then cursed, blowing on his hands as he grabbed a handful of sugar and cream packets. He made his way back inside, then up to main consoles again. He handed Ibuki the cup, and the packets. \"Enjoy...I burnt my hands getting that.\"

Alexia looked at the door as Fuyutsuki entered. She gave higrimgrim grin. \"Jack and Rei... Are they alright?\" She asked.

Ikari was motionless, seated in his chair, his hands over his face as always.

She had already gotten into the system. \"Thanks.\"

Aoba sat back down, and scrolled down the list. \"Let\'s see...hey, look at this....EVA Unit Test Data and Streaming Feed...wanna see what this is?\"

She clicked it open for him.

\"Misato called, they\'re fine. Sir, are you sure we should move her there? So far she\'s the only back-up that we have.\"

\"Huh....Okay, this is the basics...just like what we have here....Hey, look at the last entry...Unexpected Combat Between EVA-03 and EVA-04 Units...what the Hell could that mean? Run the file..\"

She nodded, opening the file.

Ikari steepled his hands, and spoke. \"Well, get the apartment readied anyway...we can send her there during testing, and attacks...that way she gets out, and we can monitor her carefully.\"

Asuka sat on the couch.

The phone rang.
