Chapter 6

Author's notes: I suck writing male/female relationships. Sorry for the Cheese.

Chapter 6

Once again Ken was up to his elbows in food preparation. He had decided to just let the incident with Yohji slide. It really bugged him but in reality there was nothing he could really do. Things had to continue on…it was just Aya and Yohji now. Maybe if he could just stop thinking about it? / It wasn’t like they betrayed me. Just…they’re just my friends…/ The heavy rain out side seeming to pound the unrelenting truth into Ken’s brain. /Why? Why? Why?/ It spattered against the window above the sink in guilt weighted drops. Just like the weighty thoughts in Ken’s head. The more he tried to stop thinking about it the more it nagged at him. Ken slammed a dish into the stain less steel sink, unable to contain his anger any longer.

“K-ken-kun?” Aya-Chan stood in the door way one hand placed delicately on the oak door frame. “What happened? Are you alright!” She moved into the room bare feet brushing against the smooth, wooden surface of the floor.

The sound of her voice and the look in her eyes had totally distracted Ken, erasing all anger from his thoughts for one brief moment. Little did he realize that blood was dripping off of his hand. It made small cherry droplets on and around his boots staining the light brown leather a deep crimson red. The dish had shattered in the empty sink slicing a large wound in Ken’s palm upon impact. Aya-Chan was instantly by his side cradling his hurt hand with gentle fingers.

Looking up, her eyes wet with worry she silently pleaded for him to answer. She could feel Ken’s tension flowing out of him like spilled milk. Never had she seen Ken blow up about something and it worried her terribly. /He’s always so calm. What’s going on? Did it have to do with Ran leaving so suddenly?/ “Please Ken…,” Aya-Chan looked down, the thick blood drying on her pale skin, “What happened? Why are you so upset? Did my brother do something?”

Ken looked away a shameful blush rose up his throat and onto his face. /Why did she have to see that? They always come in at the wrong time. Always when I’m… angry./ Looking back he caught her gaze and the pain in her eyes was worse than the pain in his hand; worse than the pain in his heart. Almost worse than any pain he had ever felt and perhaps it was because she cared so much. He felt a stir of emotion inside and his stomach did a flip. /No…no not again. Aya would kill me. But she’s so beautiful…/ Ken took in a sharp intake of breath as Aya-Chan moved his hand under cool running water. The blood ran a clear-pink lemonade color, staining the metallic bowl of the sink.

Silence filled the small kitchen as the smell of cooking rice and vegetables permeated the room. Steam was forming on the windows. /So kind…/ Ken couldn’t help but to smile a bit as Aya-Chan tenderly dried the broken flesh of his hand with a kitchen towel. From one of the cabinets below the sink she pulled a first aid kit and began to doctor the wound, wrapping it quickly and efficiently.

Her voice seemed distant when she spoke. “I don’t think it will need stitches. The cut wasn’t very deep.” Ken could see he had hurt her a bit by not responding when she had been so worried. It was more shock than anything he told himself. He hadn’t meant to hurt her. He never wanted to hurt her…ever.

Aya-Chan had turned to go the hem of her light blue skirt swirling with her graceful movement. To Ken it always seemed like she was dancing, dancing to a tune of joy and happiness. One he was afraid he’d never be able to hear again, one he'd shut out long ago. Having her here with him though made it seem slightly possible. Even when she was angry or worried she was beautiful. She was just about to pass through the door when Ken uttered her name.

“Aya…” his eyes softened as the name of an angel passed through his lips.

She stopped short taking in a small breath of surprise. /Aya…no one has just called me Aya in the longest time except my brother. I’ve always been Aya-Chan to everyone else./ Turning back into the room she smiled and looked down almost shyly.

Ken’s heart began to race. /There’s no hope for me is there?/ Thoughts swirled through his mind crashing against one another like tidal waves on a stormy shore. “Aya…I.” His voice faltered slightly… “Gomen…I didn’t mean to upset you. Things have just been a little strained lately.”

His eyes were soft with sincerity. Their deep blue-green catching Aya-Chan’s attention. Never before had she noticed what a strange color they were. Suddenly she was fascinated and entranced. Her heart beat wildly as he approached her. /What am I feeling? Why is it hard to breath?/

It had been so long that she had been keeping these feelings pent up. So many long nights alone in her small apartment wishing to feel his warm hands upon her. /Aya! What are you thinking? Why would Ken want you? There are a million other girls out there./ Biting into her lower lip she blushed deeply.

He couldn’t stop himself, she was just so beautiful standing there. Perhaps he was merely trying to heal a broken heart? At that moment he didn’t really care though. He just wanted to touch her. Ken swept her into his arms and placed a sweet kiss on her lips. It wasn’t too long before she relaxed under his touch and they were lost in the moment. Their hearts beating in one fast rhythmic motion.

Aya-Chan’s eyes went wide with surprise and shock. /He’s kissing me!/ Her eyes half lidded and she relaxed into the kiss. It was so perfect…this was what she had always wanted. Ken meant so much to her but she had been so afraid to tell him. Never thinking anything would be able to come of it she had confided in her brother. Of coarse he would offer no advice. All of this didn’t really matter though. Ken was kissing her!

The world was a blur for the both of them…until…Omi bounded down the stairs on the search for Ken and his famous cooking skills. He was hungry and wanted something to eat. It had vaguely crossed his thoughts and he wondered for a moment where Aya and Yohji had gone off too. He hadn’t seen Aya since they’d closed shop and Yohji of coarse was always difficult to find.

“Oi!” Omi called out in surprise. That certainly was the last thing he had expected to see coming down stairs that evening. /They’re kissing?/ He blushed slightly for Ken and Aya-chan seemed to be very involved. They hadn’t even noticed his loud tromping down the back stairs.

Ken released Aya-chan and a sweet sigh escaped her lips before she noticed the young man standing in the door way, his mouth hanging open. The soccer player was red from head to toe and he stuttered a bit when he tried to speak. “W…we, we were just…” he trailed off not knowing quite how to explain the situation. /At least it's Omi.../

A wide grin crossed Omi’s boyish features. “Hey guys…sorry to interrupt.” Omi decided it might not be a good idea to make a scene. He was however to say shocked beyond belief. /What’s gonna happen when Aya finds out?/ Playing it cool he spoke again. “I just happened to smell what you were cooking Ken and, well decided to come down and see what it was. Is it almost done?” He peeked his head around Ken and Aya-chan which were still in a semi-embrace.

Aya-Chan bit into her lower lip and giggled slightly. “I just came down too. Ken’s cooking is so good who could resist it?” She shrugged slightly and stepped away from Ken a little of the blush residing on her pale cheeks. “Oh do you know where my brother went off to?” The question was directed at Omi.

“He left with Yohji earlier…” Ken’s voice was slightly monotone. “I wouldn’t expect them back soon.” He turned going back to the stove and shoving his injured hand deep in his pocket. The last thing he wanted was Omi to start worrying about that an asking questions. At least the little guy had the dignity to not pry as to why he was kissing Aya-chan like that.

Omi and Aya-Chan stopped and looked quizzically at Ken who now had his back turned to both of them. “Why don’t you two wait in the living room . I’ll call you over when it’s ready.” It was more of a command than suggestion but it wasn't harsh. Aya-chan and Omi quickly left Ken’s presence with out further hesitation.

Omi thought he might try to get something out of Aya-chan once they were alone. “So…” he began trying not to sound like he was prying, “are you and Ken…you know?” He opened the door for her at the end of the hall.

She blushed wildly brushing a long strand of black hair out of her eyes. “Well…I don’t know…” Aya-chan was having a hard time with this. She didn’t know if Omi knew about the letter and now things with Ken. Needless to say she was feeling slightly uncomfortable about the whole situation.

Omi sat down on one of the worn overstuffed couches looking innocent. He simply smiled at her trying to coax her trust. “Hey…you know it’s really no big deal. If you two like each other…then go for it.” He stopped for a minute and thought. “I don’t know what your brother will think of it though. Have you told him?” Leaning back he placed his hands behind his head.

“I’ve mentioned things to Ran in my letters but, he never replied back to anything I said.” She looked sad for a moment her rosy eyes downcast. “I don’t want to hurt him but…I am growing up and I have had feelings for Ken for a very long time. I not sure I should tell him just yet. Maybe after things get sorted out.” Omi nodded in understanding but in reality Aya-chan was talking about the letter from Schuldig and not about her and Ken.

They heard a door slam from the room next to them and both jumped slightly. “Oh…that must be Aya and Yohji.” Omi commented trying not to sound nervous. He knew what had happened between Ken, Yohji and Aya and really didn’t want any part of it. They were all his friends though and it was hard not to take sides sometimes. “Maybe we should go and see?” He asked.

There was no sign of Aya and Yohji in the kitchen but Ken was still busy preparing the meal. He already had plates out and was just dishing up the rice. He turned and smiled at the both of them. It would seem that his mood had improved but when Omi caught sight of the manila envelope on the table he knew who had just paid a visit. /Birman./

“Who was that?” Aya-chan asked sweetly. She always had a feeling that she didn’t know quite everything that was going on with her brother and his friends. She had known about them all being assassins and that they had trouble with a group named Schwartz. That was why she had flown thousands of miles to come see them. She tried to not let it get to her too much but knowing they were all in danger got her worked up sometimes.

“Oh…it was just the neighbors bringing over some mail that got delivered to their address instead of ours.” Ken finished scooping out the vegetables and meat. “Well who’s hungry?” He said with a flourish and topped off their glasses with some wine he had found in the refrigerator.

Omi watched Ken carefully and then eyed the package. “Here I’ll set this out of the way and Aya can deal with it later. You know all the business mail goes to him anyway.” Glancing to Aya-Chan he wondered if she suspected. They certainly couldn’t watch the video from Kritiker with her standing by even if she did know about them. Things were starting to get complicated.

The three finished out their meal in peace. The rain had stopped outside and now night was closing over Tokyo. It wasn’t too much later when Aya and Yohji got back but the others had already finished eating. Omi was glued to his computer in his room and Aya-chan was upstairs reading a book. Ken had waited downstairs a dark look on his face. There would be a mission soon one that could possibly put Aya-chan in danger if she were left alone.

Ken put his head in his hands. He had to tell the others about Schuldig’s letter. It might somehow be linked to the new mission. Aya-chan was a sweet girl but in a lot of ways she didn’t know what they had to deal with. He could only hope that the mission had nothing to do with the letter. Sighing heavily he decided he would tell the others tonight after they had been briefed. Aya would be angry that Aya-chan had told Ken and not him but, he’d just have to accept that as well as other things that were on the way. In the still silence he waited.
