The Worlds End
It was raining. The sky covered in thick black clouds, with a slither of glowing amber off in the far distance, the setting sun nothing more than a glowing red eye on the horizon. He looked at it, through the large shadowed columns of the cities skyscrapers, as the rain hammered down in a constant rhythm all around him, why was he here? That thought had been plaguing him ever since he had decided to visit that man again, yet, he could not find a satisfactory answer.
Why after nearly 13 years would he feel the need to find that man again? It was inconceivable, though he had a problem, one he couldn’t figure out and, though he despised himself for saying it, he needed help. That was why he was here in this dying city, to find the man who had once called him friend, though he no longer sees him as such now, not since that time.
Walking down a dark alleyway he quickly made his way towards the glowing red and green neon sigh, blurred through the rain right now causing an orchestra of sounds which resonated in-between the high stone covered buildings on either side of him. On the far wall of the alley he saw a depression in the ground, presumably stairs leading into the pavement, as he neared it he saw the name of the place in glowing neon strips above the doorway, written in red and surrounded by a green boarder, it read ‘The Worlds End Bar’
‘Fitting’, thought Gendo Ikari,
Trotting down the set of stairs in the ground, going down to the door place underneath the sign, he opened it and walked inside, pulling down the hood of his black overcoat. The smell of stale smoke and old beer assaulted his senses, the lights were dimmed and shadowy, lit only by some low energy light bulbs hanging from the ceiling. The dusty streams of light threw the snaking tendrils of smoke into sharp relief whenever it floated underneath them.
As he made his way into the place he noticed his shoes sticking to the wooden floor and his nose crinkled at the sides as the smell of the smoke tripled. Glancing around he was unsurprised to find not a single person, who would come down into this shit hole in the first place? Making his way to the long bar infront of him, lights seemingly floating above it, he took a stool and sat, waiting for service.
As the dishevelled barkeep leisurely walked towards him, Gendo looked him over out of the corner of his eye, hidden behind the darkness and his tinted glasses. Looking around the age of twenty he had long light brown hair was pulled back into a low ponytail. He wore rectangular glasses with steel frames and had a beard, only on his chin with a moustache the rest clean shaven.
He wore a plain white dress shit, tucked into black trousers with the top two buttons undone, revealing a necklace made out of something white. On his shoes he wore black military style boots which were most likely steel toe capped from the look of the. Looking away again the man reached him and asked for his order, Gendo asked for the strongest whisky and moments later was given a straight whisky in a glass mostly full. Smirking to himself he paid the barman and he sipped his whisky.
The barman leaned back against the back counter, drying a glass, which Gendo knew was already dry. Moments passed in silence, then as Gendo took another sip of his whisky he glance up at the man and spoke.
“The Worlds End Bar?”
“What about it sir?” asked the other man, never stopping his ‘cleaning’
“It’s a morbid name for a bar.”
“Well I felt it was fitting considering, sir.”
“Considering?” asked Gendo sipping his whisky again
“Second Impact sir.” Said the barkeep off-handily, never looking at the man before him.
“The world did not end on Second Impact, humans live on.”
“For how long though?”
“What do you mean?”
The bar keep said nothing and continued to clean the glass. They fell in to silence, Gendo sipping his whisky and the man cleaning the now shinning glass. As Gendo finished his whisky he asked for another and the man obliged, paying for it Gendo began to drink again and the barkeep picked up a new, dirty, glass.
“I need your help.” He said quietly, sipping his whisky.
The barkeep stopped cleaning the glass and looking down at him, the lights making his glasses opaque, his eyes impossible to read. The man set down the glass and cloth then pulled a Gloch handgun out from behind him and pointed it between Gendo’s eyebrows.
“You do have a set on you don’t you Ikari.” Said the bitter tone of the barkeep. “You walk into my bar, after what you pulled, and ask for my help? Are you crazy or just plain stupid or is it a little of both perhaps?”
“I am unarmed and came alone.” Came the dead tone of Gendo, sipping his whisky, he knew this was a mistake, but he needed this mans help.
“Good.” Was the happy reply, “Makes it all the easier to kill you, goodbye Gendo Ikari.”
As the man was about to pull the trigger Gendo spoke two simple words which spared his life, for a moment.
“Rei Ayanami.”
The man froze, looking down at him with quizzical eyes. Leaning back, but not lowering the gun, he asked.
“What about her?”
“She is becoming…different.”
“Different?” said the man dryly “She’s how old now? 14, 15? Its called puberty Ikari get used to it.”
“That’s not what I mean.” He said taking a swig of the whisky
“Then what? Is your precious little doll starting to think for herself? Good.”
Gendo said nothing that was closer to the truth than he would like to admit, but there were higher problems at the moment.
“There is…a boy.”
“Again, puberty.”
“No, it’s not in that way, this boy is…different.”
“Different? Somehow with you different would somehow seem strange if it was about piercing, tattoos or heavy metal rockers. What is it? Is he an Angel?”
Steeling himself to say what he knew he must say, no matter how much he hated to admit it even to himself, he sipped his whisky. Placing the glass back onto the beer crusted surface, he looked up into the mans amber eyes.
“I don’t know.”
The barkeep looked taken aback to hear those words come out of his mouth. Taking a moment the man looked down at Gendo with unsure eyes, thinking this might be a trick or a ploy.
“You don’t know?” he repeated in a disbelieving tone, “Gendo Ikari doesn’t know? Gendo Ikari knows everything, he knows everything he ever needed to or wanted to know, even if he didn’t earn the knowledge he possesses.”
“This boy is something even SEELE never accounted for, he seems human but…”
“But?”
“He’s not suppose to exist, he doesn’t, the Magi from every corner of the world searched from him in every possible location. They all found nothing. There is no mention of anything in the Dead Sea scrolls that even relates to this boys existence, though there are some sections missing.” He added glancing up at the stony man. “He’s only a boy, no older than the Pilots, yet he managed to tare 20 of my best men to pieces like they were nothing and there’s also…that.”
“That?” said the man raising an eyebrow
“That.”
“Care to elaborate?”
“He has an S^2 Organ…”
“Then he is an Angel?”
“…outside his body.” Said Gendo
“What?” said the man swiftly and breathlessly, lowering the gun slightly unconsciously.
Gendo sipped his whisky again then continued.
“He has a necklace, with a small S^2 Organ on it. The boy can absorb it into his body and when he does he…changes.”
“Changes? How?”
“There was a Second Giant of Light, emitting a white pattern. Then when he tore my men apart he looked like an animal, feral, bestial, and the pattern appeared again. Then the pendent comes out of him and the pattern disappears and he is physically like a normal human.”
“What does this have to do with Rei?”
“She has become…attached to the boy.”
“She likes him?”
“No.”
“Then what?”
“Its like she treating him as a pet.”
“A pet?”
Gendo sipped his whisky again and, placing back on the bar top, looked down at the swirling amber liquid.
“She doesn’t talk with him, he doesn’t talk at all, yet she seems to understand him like she had known him her whole life. Also…she said no.”
“No? You think I care if she tells you no?”
“No. But you must admit that she should never have said that, not after…”
The light click told Gendo that the man had pulled back the hammer of the gun, and had retaken his aim.
“If I were you I would be very careful how I finished that sentence. I do not need to be reminded of what you did to that poor creature, using my research, Ikari.” Said the man in a venomous voice.
Gendo said nothing, sipping his whisky and never looking at the man holding his life by a finger. He waited, for what he knew was this person’s fatal flaw, his curiosity. Sure enough not too long later he leaned back against the staff counter once more and slightly relax the arm holding the gun.
“So this boy; this boy who holds the powers of angels, who carries an Angels Heart, a boy who can take the form of Adam and become so physically strong that he can kill 20 of you finest men yet still remain mostly human in appearance. Yet a boy, who doesn’t exist anywhere and is mute and, from what you implied, very docile when near Rei, who is becoming close to him and is being influenced by him in ways that are causing her to rebel against you. Is that what you’re telling me?”
Gendo sipped his whisky, yes that is what he had said, but there was more.
“Yes, that is what I said.”
“And you actually expected that I would help you fix that? You truly are more of a moron that I thought.”
“No in knew you would never help with that.”
“Huh? If not that then what? If you expect me to rewrite anything then you die now!”
“No, there is more.” Said Gendo downing the rest of his whisky and heavily placing the glass on to the bar top.
“What?”
“It happened when I questioned him. We only managed to catch him because he took a liking to the First Child who brought him to the interrogation room. For some reason he refused to let go of her, it was like he was holding onto her as if his life depended on it. Deciding to do nothing, considering what happened the last time he was attacked, when I questioned him she was there and…”
“What happened Gendo?” said the barkeep in a stern yet calm voice, what had the bastard done this time.
Turning around he poured Gendo another whisky and placed it infront of him, removing the empty glass as he did so. Leaning back again he looked down at him, genuine disgust on his face, knowing him and what he had done this little ‘problem’ was probably something of his own creation as well as something most likely rather unpleasant.
