Chapter Seven: The Other Side of the Door

“So what project do they have you working on?” Avaia asked, perching on the side of the well and leaning forward so she could continue to work on Michael’s neck.

“Zaizen wants me to update the STN-J database. But…”

“But what?”

“I think something’s going on with Zaizen.”

“Why would you say that?”

“Well, he wants me to update the database. Not just with the names of new witches and possible Seeds, but with the names of anyone who has anything to do with any of the people on the list.”

“You think he’s going on a witch hunt?”

“Exactly. Only he’s not hunting just witches,” Michael leaned back, tilting his head back and frowning up at the red haired woman as she continued to ease the knots from his neck. “I’ve been monitoring a lot of action from the Factory. They’re bringing people in when there’ve been no hunts.”

“You think they’re taking Seeds now?”

“I don’t doubt it. When I put your information in, I changed a few things, as well as encrypting the file, and I put a tag on it. Someone’s already tried accessing it.”

“Do you know who?”

“Solomon headquarters. I called and talked to Keith. He’s a contact of mine that works there. He said he was told to look for any new witches that Zaizen might target. He couldn’t get through the encryption, but he said he found the part I left unencrypted. He knows your name, now, and that you’re working with the STN-J.”

“Do they think I’m a threat?”

“They won’t. I made that as clear as I could. And I think they’re smart enough to realize a threat wouldn’t stay in the building for so long.”

Avaia snorted. “I don’t think they’d know a threat if it bit Zaizen on the ass.”

Michael blinked, and then started laughing.

In his office, Zaizen looked at the gibberish of Avaia’s encrypted file, a stunned expression on his face.

“Sir?”

“Did Toudou Hiroshi ever have an affair?”

“Sir?!”

“Do some digging. I want to know where he was twenty years ago.”

“Yes, sir.”

Amon had cried himself to sleep.

Robin continued to hold him, shifting only lie down on her bed and pull Amon to her. He wrapped his arms tight around her waist and refused to let go, head resting on her shoulder as he slept. Robin ran her fingers through his hair as she thought about what had happened, and what had been said. She had either forgotten that she was covered only by a towel, or didn’t care.

It was much later, the hour nearing midnight, when Robin’s eyes snapped open.

What…? Something’s not right, but what is it?

It wasn’t Amon, still clinging to her like she was his lifeline, or the moonlight streaming through her bedroom window, reflecting off—

Water.

There was water on her bedroom floor.

She could see the moonlight reflecting off of it onto the ceiling. Carefully, she sat up, nearly smiling when Amon tightened his grip on her waist. The smile died when she saw the water flowing through the crack under her bedroom door, across her floor, and toward the bed. Only it wasn’t pooling like it should have.

She muffled her cry of fear as she saw the threads running through it. Cold threads that guided the water from the door and across the middle of the room. Biting her lip against her frightened whimper, Robin nudged at Amon.

“Amon… Amon wake up.”

“Mmm…” He grunted, mumbled something, and dragged her down.

“Amon.” She poked at him now, her breathing rate doubling as she shook his shoulders. “Amon please.”

The tone of her voice must have done the trick. Dark eyes blearily cracked open as he yawned. “Mm. Robin? What’s wrong?”

The reflection moonlight off the water now covered her entire ceiling. “Amon…”

He glanced up at the ceiling, and shot upright.

“Shit.”

“Amon…”

In a flurry of action, he somehow managed to get her onto his back, at the same time crawling across the bed toward the window, where he set her on the sill. Their shadows blocked some of the moonlight, which frightened Robin more, because she couldn’t see where the water was.

“How did you know?”

“I don’t know. I just woke up and knew something was wrong,” she whispered, clinging to the arm he was using to shield her and hold her on the sill at the same time.

“Is there a fire escape outside your window?”

“No!”

The water had reached her bed, somehow climbed up its sides, and had engulfed it in a solid sheet of liquid.

“How is it doing that?!” Amon snarled, pressing back against the wall and frantically trying to think of a way out of this.

Robin glanced out the window.

“Amon!”

He turned, looked out, and saw the man standing on the street staring up at the window. Swearing, Amon swung Robin into his arms and charged for the door.

Water surged up the walls.

Robin screamed.

The bottle of soda slipped through her fingers, the glass shattering at her feet. Michael turned from where he’d been about to open the door.

“Avaia?”

Her violet eyes were unfocused, lips parted as she gasped softly.

“Robi…”

He opened the door, in time to hear the phone ringing. Avaia snapped out of her trance and bolted inside, snatching up the phone and thrusting it into Michael’s hands.

Several blocks away, Miho woke up, breathing hard. She immediately picked up her cell phone and called Michael.

“Michael, what’s going on at Robin’s apartment?”

“Huh….?”

“WAKE UP, MICHAEL! SOMETHING’S WRONG AT ROBIN’S APARTMENT!”

“How would—“

There was a shuffling sound on the other end of the line, and then someone else’s voice came on.

“Hello, Karasuma? This is Avaia. What did you see?”

“Water, everywhere. Climbing on the walls…”

Miho Karasuma rubbed her eyes, forcing her breathing to calm down.

“I’ll meet you at Robin’s. Do yove yve your gun?”

“Y-yes.” What was going on?

“Bring it. You’ll need it.”

The line disconnected, and Karasuma stared at her phone for a moment, before disconnecting her end. She picked up her gun, her purse, and jammed her feet into her shoes as she raced out the door. She’d fallen asleep on her couch.

Doujima turned around, staring at the blank wall in front of her.

“Doujima?”

“Sakaki… call Michael.”

“Why?”

“Just do it.”

Sakaki pulled out his cell phone, but blinked when Doujima slid down from her stool and started pulling pieces of her Orbo gun from her purse.

“Yeah, Michael, Doujima told me to—what do you mean something’s wrong? Karasuma just called? Robin’s place?! Yeah, we’re going now.”

Doujima was already heading for the door.
~*~

Harry watched Doujima and Sakaki literally run from his café. He’d heard only snatches of the conversation, but it was enough to make him worried. He locked up after them, as they’d been there after hours anyway, and hopped into his car. He knew something was wrong. Rarely had he actually felt the power in his blood stir.

He worried for Robin and Amon.
~*~

At the Factory all the contained witches suddenly went quiet. No screaming. No banging on the doors of their cells. Just a soft murmuring that had all the Factory guards and scientists fearfully watching the doors.

“What’s going on?” A rookie whispered.

“I don’t know. They’ve never done this before.”

They’d just exchanged a worried glance when, in an instant, every Orbo pendant and bullet in the building came to life.
~*~

Karasuma, Doujima, Sakaki, and Avaia were standing on the landing when they felt a burst of power go past them, slamming them against the wall. Only Doujima was unaffected. At the bottom of the staircase, Master Harry bounced off the wall. Eyes wide in fear, Doujima turned back to the apartment door. An unsteady hand reached out and tried to push the door open. Water gushed out of the cracks around the door, but refused to let her inside.

“What—“

Harry shouldered his way onto the landing, staring intently at the door. There was a loud burble from the other side, and then the door swung open, water crashing onto Doujima’s feet.

The group pulled themselves together as they stepped inside, their shoes squelching in the puddle of water that covered the entire floor. Karasuma immediately headed for the bedrooms, Avaia right behind her. Robin’s bedroom door was the only one shut.

Slowly, Avaia pushed the door open, gasping as she glimpsed the room on the other side of the door.
