Chapter 7: Date?
*The sun goes down,
While children listen,*
The tombstone seemed to mock him. It’s words telling him that he’d lost his chances. He was early, or she was late, there hadn’t really been much discussion of time. Faye and Spike were out on a date, lucky for them or not, depng ong on who was being asked, Ed was staying with them, and was now on babysitting duty.
“It’s not a bad spot,” her voice broke the seemingly endless silence.
*All the way down.*
Jet turned to see her standing behind him, garbed in a pair of black jeans and a t-shirt. A little girl with pale blonde hair hugged her hand and stared at him with large grey-blue eyes. He knew who she was. This was her child, the one that she had borne to Vicious. She was a beautiful girl.
“Is this the man you were talking about, Amaya?” the girl asked softly. She even sounded like her.
*Black as the crow,
Is the space you leave me standing*
“So, you must be Aurora,” Jet greeted as he knelt down to her. “My name’s Jet.”
Aurora smiled. “You have nice eyes.”
Jet chuckled and looked up to Amaya’s grinning face. “She’s cute.”
*All the way down*
Amaya nodded. “Sith and Vicious needed some time alone, so I decided to take her with me.”
Jet nodded and stood. “You look different,” he said.
“That’s cause she’s not a dragon anymore, she’s a wolf. Daddy told me that she’s magical, but sometimes I think he’s fibbing,” Aurora explained.
Jet chuckled as Amaya stared at the child with an almost innocent wonder.
* I hold you here tonight,
and if you had seen the light,
we would go all the way down.*
The three of them spent the day together. Taking Aurora to the park to feed the ducks, out to lunch, and then to get ice cream and watch the sun set. By the end of the day, Aurora was asleep in Amaya’s arms. Jet watched her in silent reverence, a longing in his eyes for what life would have been if he had not driven her to leave.
* Up there in space,
your looking down on us,
looking all the way down.*
oes oes she know?” he asked suddenly.
Amaya turned her head to him, a sadness there and a fear. “No, I don’t know if it would be safe. I don’t want her to lose me like I lost my mother.”
“What do you mean?” he asked.
“It would be better to think that her mother is already dead, for her to think of Sith as her mother, than to lose me again.”
“Like you?” he asked.
“Yeah, like me.” She then turned back tot eh sunset, a lone tear glinting in the light as it traveled over the scar that ended on her cheekbone and covered her left eye. “Jet, do you think things would have been different, had I not left the Bebop that night?”
* And if you fell to earth,
they have a name they call it,
they say, all the way down.*
“Which time?” he asked.
“The second time. I don’t regret conceiving her.”
“Yeah, I think so,” he said. “I’m sorry for the things I said that night.”
Amaya smiled. “I know, I forgave you long ago.”
“So, are you and Vicious-?”
“No,” she finished. “He and Sith are together and, if I have anything to do with it, will eventually tie the knot.”
Jet chuckled softly and shook his head. “Still meddling in affairs that aren’t yours, I see.”
Amaya turned her head to face his. “What’s that supposed to mean?” she asked, her face twisted into a playful pout.
“It’s part of who you are, you can’t leave well enough alone. I mean, you got Spike and Faye married.”
“How did I do that?” she asked.
“After you left, after you were declared the syndicate’s next in line, Faye had announced that she and Spike were going to have a child. Eventually, after he got over himself, Spike took responsibility and popped the big question. The whole time he was thinking, he was trying to determine what you would say,” Jet explained.
Amaya laughed. “I’m glad I could have been of help, but you can’t say that was my fault.”
“It’s your fault, I know it. You wrote to Faye, I know you did. You kept her there, on the ship. You gave the idiot time.”
Amaya sighed and smiled arrogantly, her old self showing through slightly. “I try.”
Jet laughed.
* If you burned your wings,
and fell into my arms,
you know I wouldn\'t mind,
being all the way down.*
Jet stood at the door to the apartment building, Amaya and the sleeping Aurora standing in the open door. “Call me?” he asked.
Amaya nodded. “I will. I missed talking to you.”
“I missed you too.”
Amaya blushed slightly. Jet grinned, he still could get this woman, which could kill in cold blood and could cheat death, to blush. “Good night, Jet.”
Jet moved forwards and pressed his lips to hers in a chaste kiss. Her grey eyes filled with unknown emotions as he pulled away. “Good night, Amaya,” he bid as he touched her cheek softly before turning and began his long trek back to the ship.
* I can\'t believe in hell,
but I got to believe in heaven.
I couldn\'t sleep at night,
not knowing, that you were somewhere better.*
He still held a smile on his face as he entered the doors of the Bebop and strode towards the living area. Spike was sitting on the couch watching as Ed played virtual chess.
“Hey,” Spike greeted. He then noticed the grin. “I take it, she’s good?”
“Yeah, I met Aurora today too,” Jet said.
Spike seemed impressed. “So it was a G-rated date?” he teased.
“It was not a date.”
“Did you kiss her?” Spike asked.
Jet turned away, a slight blush on his cheeks.
“It was a date!” Ed declared.
Jet scowled at the orange haired hacker and then turned back to the cat-like grin of Spike. “Where’s Faye?” Jet asked, changing the subject.
“Checking on Jack. How does she look?” Spike asked.
“She’s accumulated scars, physical and emotional, from what I could tell, but she’s still Rain,” Jet answered.
“Amaya is Japanese, meaning night rain!” Ed blurted.
“Fitting,” Faye said as she entered the living room and took a seat next to her husband. “So, did he kiss her?”
“Yes,” Spike answered.
Faye grinned. “You owe me twenty woolongs.”
Jet raised an eyebrow. “I’m going to bed,” he declared as he left the room.
* If you burned your wings,
and fell into my arms,
you know I wouldn\'t mind
being all the way down.*
As he stared at his ceiling his thoughts drifted to the day he had. After all this time, he was still in love with her. After all this time, after everything they had both endured, they still fit. He smiled as he felt the heavy pull of sleep envelop him. He loved her, and that’s all that was needed… for now.
*All the way down.*
