Peril
Kai ran as fast as he could. He had heard a loud noise, like something solid being thrown and hitting something equally solid. Rannock-san told me about Avretta, he thought with gritted teeth, But she couldn\'t have come back again...right? He considered himself lucky. Unlike Umi, Rannock had told Kai of his true identity once he hired him. If he hadn\'t, Kai knew he wouldn\'t understand any part of what had just happened.
He skidded to a halt in front of Rannock\'s study. Kai entered the small room, similar in appearance to the other rooms of the castle. However, this one was chock full of historical books on magic and the elements. There was a table in the center, with two chairs, one of which was tucked in...but the other was clumsily thrown aside.
And there was Rannock. He was slumped against the wall nearest to the table, unconscious. He was bleeding from the head.
\"Shit!\" Kai groaned, \"Now what? There must be some sort of magic that can save him...magic...I wonder if Umi-chan would be able to do healing spells by now.\"

Kai quickly ran to the large empty dungeon where Umi was practicing water magic yet again. He swiftly told her the story of what had happened, and the two of them ran off.
\"He\'s lucky,\" Umi said when she investigated the injury to Rannock\'s head, \"It\'s just a large cut. There\'s some time to try to work magic on the wound - he won\'t die anytime soon.\" Her voice caught in her throat. Despite her confession, she knew she would be lying if she tried to say that she loved Rannock in that special way. But why in the world did she find herself so unnaturally nervous and concerned? She didn\'t know whether to consider it a good thing or be creeped the hell out.
\"I\'ve never really gotten a spell to work the first time,\" Umi said, \"This will be hard. But...\" She placed her hands a half-centimeter apart and held them flat, about half of an inch above the wound. \"Healing by Water,\" she said hopefully. Nothing happened.
\"Fuck!\" she cried out. Despite her frustration and anger, she tried again. This time, she chanted the spell continually. \"Healing by Water...Healing by Water...Healing by Water...\"
Rannock jolted to life, sending Umi flying backward. She steadied herself before she ould fall over. Rannock slowly got to his feet. \"Dammit...it was that Avretta...\" he said, \"I used to be a part of FireClan. I was a foolish teenager back then, and after a certain incident Avretta convinced herself that I oved her. I didn\'t. Now that I\'ve left her evil group, she wants me to rejoin. Smart broad...she understands my power. Nice way to convince me to rejoin - trying to kill me.\"
\"So...did the spell work?\" Kai asked, practically bouncing off the walls in all of his excitement.
\"A spell?\" Rannock asked, surprised.
\"You had a wound on the back of your head from the impact with the wall,\" Umi explained, \"The blood was pretty bad. And I...I created a spell to seal up the wound. There\'s probably going to be a scar, but other than that you should be okay.\"
The easily bored Kai simply walked out of the room. Now that Rannock was okay, he didn\'t care about the situation.
\"That\'s...incredible,\" Rannock said, \"You actually managed to work a spell on the first try. This means that your power is growing steadily. Things are looking up.\"
And he kissed her on the cheek, and even though it was only as a way of thanking her, and between friends, Umi felt free for the second time that day.
