They managed to drive for another two days before the grief and tense silences finally got to be too much.
At dinner that night, Gojyo looked at Sanzo with the eyes of a thoroughly broken man. “I can’t do this anymore, Sanzo.”
Sanzo regarded him with a hard violet stare, but didn’t say anything. Goku blinked in confusion. “What do you mean? What can’t you do anymore?”
Gojyo looked at the ground, not willing to meet the monkey’s eyes. With an annoyed sigh, Sanzo elaborated. “He’s ditching us.”
“But…What? Why?” The monkey gave the kappa a confused look.
“It hurts too much.” When Gojyo looked up, his eyes were filled with tears. “I’m sorry.”
“Save your sorry for someone who gives a shit,” Sanzo said, giving the half-breed a disdainful look. “You’re just not man enough to face your pain.”
“You’d know all about that, wouldn’t you?” Gojyo asked, none of his usual anger or venom in the question.
Sanzo looked like he’d been slapped at the kappa’s words. With an angry shout, he pulled his gun and pointed it at Gojyo. “One more word and I’ll kill you, asshole.”
Gojyo looked back at him steadily, his expression one of resignation to whatever fate the gods had left for him. “Then do it, Sanzo. Stop making empty threats and just do it already!”
The priest looked at the other for a long moment. “What the fuck, kappa?”
Gojyo remained silent. With a quiet, hesitant voice, Goku said the priest’s name.
Sanzo raised the barrel of the pistol until it was pointing at the clouds. “Tch. Do what the fuck ever you want. But don’t expect to come crawling back when things get tough.”
“I know.” With a deep breath, the kappa rose to his feet. “Guess I’ll be going then.”
“But you can’t,” Goku said, hoping he could convince his friend to stay now that the tension was broken. Hakuryu chirped an agreement.
“I have to.” Gojyo’s tone indicated that he wasn’t going to argue. “Hakuryu, you stay with Sanzo. They’ll need you.”
Hakuryu gave a long, low, sad chirp.
Without another word, the kappa gathered his pack of belongings and headed out of their camp. He didn’t miss the irony of the fact that he was headed east, into the land of the living.
Sanzo and Goku watched the kappa leave silently. Hakuryu made an annoyed sound. A moment after Gojyo left the clearing they had camped in, the small dragon lifted himself off the ground and darted after the water sprite.
Goku stepped forward to stop the dragon, but Sanzo put a gently restraining hand on his shoulder. “Let them go. That damn kappa is going to need him more than we will.”
“Sanzo?” Goku was confused by his keeper’s suddenly gentle tone of voice.
“You don’t heal alone. And you can’t heal by running away.” Sanzo was pretty sure that he was the foremost authority on that subject.
