The Greenhouse

Why am I doing this? Why am I doing this? Why am I doing this? Why am I doing this? Why the FUCK am I doing this? He felt int he back of his mind that he should be pacing. That's what a normal person would do. Instead, he stared at monitors. Instead, all he could manage to do was think to himself on how stupid he was being. Oh, and eat donuts, he could do that as well. The simplest idea would to just kill Light off, Rem would certainly be pleased. Something in L's eyes switched and became less hard. I can't do that. Not unless I have to. They became black steel again. He has no such qualms for killing me, however. Why am I doing this? He scratched his head listlessly and saw a car pull up to the front gate. A surge of panic and overwhelming happiness flooded him at one time. Light got out and walked to the gate, then pressed the button for the microphone out there. "L, I'm here."

L seriously considered not answering. Of course, a serious consideration for him only took a few moments. "Where is the Death Note?" He could visibly see Light get it out of his bag and before he could talk into the mic again, L responded. "Tear out a piece of paper and put it through the air chute." Light looked surprised, perhaps about L watching him (though it really shouldn't) or because L had an air chute much like banks used to have. He did as he was told and the paper in a small casket arrived L in no time. He quickly touched the paper inside and Ryuk appeared to him. Suddenly, he sort of regretted this. It almost felt like he was outnumbered, though Rem assured him that Ryuk was harmless to him and was only in it for his own entertainment - and apples. He reluctantly pressed the button so the gate's doors opened. Yet not reluctant enough to stop me. Light walked up to the mansion. It was old and very European. It was actually Victorian era yet very well kept, looking like an elegant grey at first but upon further inspection one could see it was slightly green. The garden was beautiful. L got up and left his computer room and headed to the foyer, Death Note in hand.

He opened the door and saw that outside was overcast but most of all, he saw Light. They both stood for a moment, Death Notes firmly in hand, neither of them with the shinigami eyes yet one of them having the upper hand. They stood there, confused about how the felt. Gut instincts swirled and froze them in place. A clash of oxymorons ran through them painfully. Why do I want to write his name down and yet why do I want to kiss him once more? He realized he was frowning. "Kira." He said, purposefully causing distance between them. Light's body didn't move but the look in his eyes was as if he had flinched.

"L." He said sullenly, their eyes not parting.

Silence. Deafening silence. Awkwardness like L, the king of all blunt honesties and strangeness, had never felt before. He finally stepped back. "Please come in." And he lead him down the hall. They came to a small room, or at least small in comparison to the other rooms, with a table. It wasn't necessarily a dining table or anything but it was a very elaborate room. "Please sit down." He grabbed an apple out from a bowl on a shelf and threw it to Ryuk.

A great smile washed over Ryuk's face and he quickly said. "Oh, I like him. Not only is he lots of fun but he gives me apples!"

They both sat down and stared at each other. Each Death Note lay in front of them. L once again spoke first. "Why?"

"Why what?" Light said, agitated.

"Why... Everything. Why did you do it, why don't you see what your doing is murder, why..." He paused, not wanting to sound as if he disapproved, but he continued. "did you come searching for me, and why did you confess?"

"You already know those answers." He said almost brutally but then calmed down. A long moment of obviousness that L was not going to respond, he completed his answer. "You know I did it to clean the world of trash. You know that I know it's not cold blooded murder, it's a necessary evil to rid the world of criminal scum. I came to find you because my life rests in your hands and I confessed because you already knew. And again, I'm basically at your mercy. This is the first time someone has ever had any sort of power over me. Congratulations." He basically spat out that last word.

"No." L's hand reached for his own notebook. He opened it and got out a pen. He made a single dot on the paper, causing Light to inhale sharply. Something about it made L like it, though he wasn't fond of the situation. "That's incorrect. If you hadn't confessed, I would still have doubt. It would be only a small amount of doubt but doubt nonetheless. I couldn't kill you under those circumstances."

"But now you can..." Light said, sounding defeated but yet not looking away.

"Not unless I have to." L admitted, clicking the pen so that the point was retracted into itself. He put the pen down and with one hand firmly against the Death Note he reached out his other one. "You could surrender. Give me the Death Note. I won't ask you to discard it. I won't ask you to go to prison. Those will not bring back the people you murdered. That will not have justice properly served. I do not believe that Yagami Light is a murderer. I do not think that you would take a knife to anyone's throat. I do not think that, without the book, you will be evil. Light-kun..." This time, Light visably flinched. L was switching between names and he seemed to know the relevance of that. Light stood slowly and delicately, his features almost soft. "Give up the book, give up the power. Give up trying to be a god. Perhaps someday, you're going to realize what you've done and you will regret it. I do not even ask that much of you. I only ask you give up the power to harm anyone else."

Light's mind was visibly racing but he stood up angrily, book in a clenched fist. "No, I will not stop passing judgment simply because you have my life in your hands. I am not fearful of you! I only respect the fact that you currently have the upper hand." With that, he turned to leave but the doors were locked. Confused and flustered, he felt something cold clank around his wrist and heard the sound of another lock. No...

They stood there, glaring at each other, once against chained to one another. "Don't worry, it's only temporary..." L said, lifting his phone to his ear. "Hello, this is Elliot Van Stephens, could you disconnect all cable from my house and call my cellphone once it is finished? Thank you." He turned back to Light and shrugged. "Sorry but if you won't give up power, I'm going to have to render you harmless to society."

And it took three hours twenty seven minutes of pure silence, sometimes accompanied by Light's hateful stares or L's silently eating sweets that had been stored away in a tableware cabinet. Finally the phone rang and L picked it up. "Hello?"

"Mr. Van Stephens? This is Joe Barker from the cable company. Your cable has successfully been cut off. We thank you for your business." Then the line went dead.

L slowly put his cellphone back in his jean's pocket. He unlocked the cuffs slowly, watching Kira's reactions. "Yagami-kun, the whole house is free to you. I will lock the doors as I see fit, though." With that, he walked out of the room but Light followed him.

"Wait, how long are you going to keep me here? This is... kidnap!"

"I'm pretty sure that the law will forgive me. Kidnap is less of a crime than murder. Anyways, consider this an arrest, not a kidnap. I am, after all, part of the justice system."

Light stopped for a moment before rushing up. "Don't you have to read me my miranda rights or something?! You can't just keep me like a pet. You have no evidence against me therefor you can't hold me!"

L halted, turning slightly to look Light in the eyes over his shoulder. "This isn't America. If I were going to have a pet, it would be much cuter. And your right, I have very little evidence that proves you are Kira. In that case, I guess you could say I'm kidnapping you." He shrugged slightly, turning his head back. "Doesn't matter to me and it doesn't change your situation. By the way, this house has no landlines. The only phonme is my cellphone which has a password to turn on. The windows are bulletproof, the doors to the outside are locked. Nothing in this house will help you discover my name. There's camera's just about everywhere. And I'm not the only one watching them, so I'll get a little nifty call if you do the trade." He held up his notebook. "If you do, you die. Half your lifespan to lose all of it? That's not something Kira would do, even if he felt he had to do the trade which in itself isn't like him. Don't you agree, Yagami-kun?" The detective watched with half amusement as the veins in Light's head looked as if they were going to burst. He felt tired and as if he had talked for far too long so he went and got some tea, leaving Kira in his tracks.

Light just stood there, dumbfounded. He angrily yelled at himself in his mind as to why he shouldn't have come here. He screamed at himself that he was a moron for ever been excited to see L again. He punched a wall, doing absolutely nothing to the wall but seriously bruising his knuckles. He leaned against that wall and collapsed against it, falling to the ground. His head was swimming. Why does he not want the perfect world I seek? He's won already! The idea was that he would be right and therefor be satisfied. L doesn't care about people! Why is he doing this to the world! However, more crushing revelations suddenly dawned on him. I'm a god! How did he do this to a god? What is he? Which then, inevitably, lead back into a roundhouse circle. "He?She? He growled, angry that his curiosity switched back on him. He decided to discover this house more. There was nine bathrooms, seven bedrooms, a kitchen, a banquet hall, a luxurious library, a computer room (complete with screens that showed the camera angles), a normal dining room, a basement converted into a billiard that looked as if it was never used. At least, that was all that Light saw before he got bored of deliberately searching. He was tired so he went into the first room he saw on after seeing the billiard and climbed into bed, holding tightly onto his Death Note. Ryuk had left him alone, downstairs eating apples. He fell asleep fairly soon.

L had gone to find him, he was going to try to make civil conversation. He didn't want Light to feel barred from him. However, he found him in the Scarlet Room. It was actually quite fitting that Light would be in a room with golden walls and a brown rug. Earthy warm colors enveloped the room with red accents. The satin pillows he laid his head on were a dark scarlet, his auburn hair sprawled out around his face in an unorganized way. Strange how his hair being untidy offsets the rest of him. He even sleeps in a uniform manner. Kind of creepy, like a vampire... Because he did, he lie on his back, stiff, arms over the boy's Death Note in a way that you often see girls holding books against their chests. However, considering this was Kira, it was much more sinister.

Yet there was something about his face that was relaxed, innocent. It reminded him of when Light was in the cell and suddenly had no memories of being Kira. L now knew that it was because he had given up ownership of the Note. So in a way Light looked evil, like the mass murderer he was. A power-hungry conniving self-righteous boy who was more or less a brat. On the other hand, he looked soft and unable to do such things as he did. Kind of creepy, like a vampire; kind of lovely, like an angel. The detective put the tip of his thumb between his lips. This of course wasn't the first time that L had ever seen him sleep, having been chained to him twenty four hours a day at one point. Something now, however was different. How do I get him to be that angelic portion of him all the time?

Light was dreaming. It was unusual for him because dreams were nothing but thoughts jumbled up and unorganized and he always seemed to have his thoughts figured out. Light was running toward L. It was actually fairly corny, they both had their arms out. You half would expect them to be on the beach or something but instead there was just nothingness around them. Grey nothingness. They were just about to touch each other when suddenly a cage slammed down around him. A gilded cage that was very large but a cage none the less. He spun around to find L inside it with him, his fingers holding a pen to his mouth the same way he would hold a spoon or his thumb to his lips. The Death Note was open. Suddenly, he was afraid and looked for the Death Note. It was right next to him. Ryuk laughed somewhere but couldn't be seen. L was just staring at him. Always staring. He opened his own book and inside it were names but the only ones he could read were Elliot Van Stephens, Ryugia Hideki, Ryuuzaki, and L. Ryuks laughter became louder and L was mumbling something... "They say he or she who makes the first move wins." Over and over, slowly getting louder until it's a gentle whisper. Then it became "They say he or she who move wins. Say he or she wins. He or she." Repeatedly until it became just taunting "He or she?" Light got flustered with not knowing, with beign trapped. Everything hit him at once. L wins, making Light feel incompetent. This was the first time such a thing would happen.

Suddenly he screamed "I don't know!" He was awake, sweating, sitting up in his bed. His eyes opened straight to the figure of L, who had just been turning to leave. He glanced back over his shoulder with an expression of confusion. He quickly erased that from his face and looked blank again. "Neither do I..." A deep sadness infected his voice and was obvious to Light though he was left into confusion of what L meant. A sweaty Light was anything but composed as his face became confused, his thoughts taking over his body as his captor left the room. His knees came up to his chest and he placed his forehead on those knees, taking a deep breath. He had never been overwhelmed by any emotion before and now he was overwhelmed with all the wrong ones. He was scared, confused, and trapped.

Fufa's Notes:

Okay, so I got an entire chapter done in one day! Yay! I work tomorrow and the next day but I hope to update on Wednesday or Thursday night, k?

A little insight about why Light is reacting strange - the same way he became murderous when the book was found. When you find power, you tend to overuse it. When power is stripped from you, you tend to feel even more hopeless than you are. He's going through a rough time right now where his body and his mind seem to be two different entities. Or, more specifically, his heart and his mind. They both come to the same thing, however, and that is L - though looking at him in two different ways. :D

I know, you all probably hate me because there's been no sex. ;_; I don't blame you. Pretty soon, however, things are going to come back to them at least snogging a little. Like I've said before, sex will be the last chapter and I wouldn't count on too many lime scenes between here and then. Maybe a couple? But also I don't think there will be too many more chapters anyways.

Thanks for reading.
