Chapter 7: Truths Revealed
“You will be a perfect addition to our army...” a cruel voice chuckled behind her, she couldn’t turn her head to see who it was due to the straps holding her head in place. But she didn’t need to see the person’s face to know who it was, the voice told her everything. Kelfka. She could feel the weight of something being placed on her head, then her vision went completely black...
...she was standing in front of a large piece of technology, a new weapon she was told, and it was hers to command. “Yes sir, I understand completely” she replied to the command her officer had given her. With that she climbed into the pilot seat...
...the townspeople were screaming in terror and pain. A few ragtag defenders tried to stop her progress, firing round after round at her, but their bullets did little to no damage. With a flick of the controls, a beam of fire consumed the defenders, their screams filling the night air as they were burned to death. Feeling dampness on her cheek, she looked up at the gently falling snow. Bringing her mind back to the task at hand, she moved on, the bodies of her victims crunching under her weapon’s feet. Another group of defenders rushed her from behind a shadowed building. She pressed another button, a beam of light emitted from the chest of her weapon, vaporizing the small group. As she was about to move forward, she heard a rumbling noise off to the left. Turning her head, she opened her mouth in shock as a wall of snow rushed upon her....
Terra woke up with a scream. Her body glistening with a layer of sweat. Cradling her head in her hands, she began to cry. She’d had the same nightmare ever since she woke up in Cid’s lab.
Hearing her scream, Michael, Alicia and Akasha woke up, looking at Terra with worry. Putting his arm around her shaking shoulders, Michael pulled her in close. “Terra, what’s wrong?” his voice shook with worry.
Looking up at him, tears flowing down her cheeks, shook her head. “N-nothing....just a bad dream....” she replied, her voice choked with tears. “Just a bad dream....”
“Must have been one hell of a bad dream,” Akasha said. “That scream was loud enough to wake the dead.....even the un-dead!”
Terra chuckled slightly at the joke. Alicia placed her cool hand on her arm, causing goose bumps to cover her skin. “You sure that you’re alright?” she asked softly.
“Yeah, I’ll be ok....” Terra lied. With that, the others lay back down and within minutes were once again fast asleep. Wiping tears from her eyes, Terra lay back down. I just wish that these dreams would disappear, she thought, watching the shadows dance about the ceiling in the moonlight. I must tell them the truth....no matter what it might be... She once again closed her eyes, but it was a while before she fell back to sleep.
The next morning, Terra awoke to the feeling of the sun’s gentle rays caressing her cheek. Slowly opening her eyes, she looked out the window, the sun was just cresting the hills around Navette. Stretching her arms above her, she yawned and looked around the room.
Akasha was at her usual place by the fire, still naked, a glass of blood balanced gently in her fingers. Hearing water running, and soft moans coming from the bathroom, she figured that Michael was giving Alicia a little ‘attention’. Smiling to herself, she slipped out of bed and walked over to join the Vampire.
“Good morning.” Akasha greeted the Esper as she joined her by the fireplace. Terra yawned in reply. “How did you sleep? Any more bad dreams?”
“”No,” she replied. “Thankfully the dreams did not return last night.” She glanced over at the bathroom door as she heard a loud moan, followed by a grunt come from that direction. Turning back to Akasha, she asked: “Isn’t it a little early for that kind of thing?”
Both girls giggled. As the door to the bathroom clicked open they tried to suppress their laughter. “It’s never too early to have a little fun...” Akasha whispered to Terra, who giggled softly in response.
Michael and Alicia exited the bathroom, a steady stream of steam following closely behind. They both had towels wrapped around themselves for modesty’s sake, but they soon dropped these as they began to dress.
All four of them turned their heads as they heard a nock at their door. Akasha got up from her seat to answer it. She stepped back to allow one of Cid’s aids to enter the room. Seeing Alicia and Michael still dressing, he averted his eyes. “Professor Cid has invited you to join him for some breakfast outside on the patio, there are some matters that he wishes to discuss with you.”
“Tell the professor that we will be there shortly.” Michael told the aid, struggling with a pair of pants, bringing giggles from Alicia.
Nodding, the aid turned and left the room, Akasha closing the door behind him.
The breakfast looked to Michael like a smaller version of the previous night’s meal. There were many different types of bread, fruits, beverages (with a bottle of blood for Akasha), eggs, and cereals. Cid was unsure of everybody’s tastes, so he had asked his aids to prepare a variety for his guests.
Once everyone had settled down and started to eat, Cid began to speak. “I have asked you all here to tell you three things. The first is that you’re all welcome to stay as long as you wish, and if your travels ever happen to bring you back to this city, consider my home, your home. This next part concerns you, Michael.”
Michael looked at Cid, confusion clearly written on his features. “What about me?”
“I was not truthful with you the other day, concerning Terra.” Everyone turned to look at the Esper, who looked at Cid with a mixture of confusion and wonder.
“What about Terra?” Cloud asked.
“As far as I can tell, Terra is not a true Pokegirl.” This brought gasps of amazement from all those present, Terra just stared blankly at Cid. “You remember yesterday when I told you about the MagiTech Armor?” Michael nodded. “Well, that’s not all that we found on that excavation. The machine was encased in a thick layer of ice. When we carefully removed the ice, we found something else. Seated atop the Armor, we found a pilot, completely frozen. From our analysis of the ice, we discovered that it wasn’t naturally occurring ice, it was similar to the ice created by an Ice-Type of Pokegirl.
“When we excavated the pilot, we were surprised to find very faint life readings. It seems that the special properties of the ice, the pilot was placed into a state of cryo-sleep. We are still in the developmental stages of cryogenic technology, but whatever generated this ice had the same effect on the pilot.
“After a long time, we were finally able to revive the pilot, though they seemed to have no memory before awakening in the lab.”
“Whatever happened to this pilot?” Yuffie asked enthusiastically.
“Well, they’re right here.” Cid turned to face Terra. “The pilot that we found was Terra.” Everyone’s eyes turned to look at Terra. “Yes, it’s you Terra,” Cid answered her questioning look. “It was you we found encased in ice. You’re approximately 2000 years old, but with the cryo-sleep, you’re body is still that of a 19 year old.”
“No, it can’t be! You’ve made a mistake...” Terra cried, tears running down her cheeks. Michael placed a reassuring arm around her shoulders. “Michael, tell him that he’s wrong. I’m not 2000 years old, I...I....”
“Terra, I know this is difficult for you to understand, but I’m telling you the truth.” Cid told her gently. “Your name is Terra Branford. You were a legendary soldier in the Empire, under the rule of Emperor Ghestal, a ruthless militant leader. You are what can only be called a Half-Esper. Your mother was a human, while your father was a true Esper, a magical beast from another world. He and his kind were what were called Eldions, Guardian Forces, or plainly Summon Monsters. You are human in appearance, but you possess an uncharted amount of magical potential.”
“If this is true, then why can’t I remember any of this?” Terra pleaded, trying to make sense of what he was telling her.
“It is because of the Emperor’s closest and most trusted advisor. A maniacal maniac named Kelfka.” Terra flinched at this name, remembering parts of her dream. “He was the one who came up with the design for the MagiTech Armor, which used the condensed powers of Eldions trapped within crystals, called Magicite. Thinking that you might rebel as a pilot, and wanting to harness your latent powers, he used a mind control device...” Reaching beside him, Cid drew out a silver box. Placing it on the table, he opened it. Inside was what looked like a simple woman’s tiara, silver with a few green and red crystals set into the metal.
Seeing this, Terra’s head began to ache, she placed a hand to her forehead in a futile attempt to block the pain, seeing this, Cid quickly closed the box. “This is what he used to control your mind. A side effect of this device was that it temporarily caused amnesia when it is removed. This explains your memory loss...”
“I remember...” Terra began, as images flooded back into her mind. “I remember growing up in a palace, filled with technology. I don’t remember my parents, but I have a feeling that they died a long time ago... I was raised by Emperor Ghestal and his wife, but she died when I was ten. I remember Kelfka, I always thought he was a court jester, always dressed like a clown. The next bits are all brief images and sounds.”
“Try to concentrate.” Cid prompted her gently. “What else can you rememeber?”
“I remember Kelfka telling me that I’d be a perfect addition to their army, then he placed something on my head.... The next thing I can remember is walking through a town, soldiers were firing at me...I....I...killed them!” She began to cry openly, after a minute, she continued. “The snow was falling, their blood staining the freshly fallen snow....I fired at another group of defenders... Then I heard a rumble off to my side, I turned and saw a wall of snow coming at me.” Looking at everyone at the table, she shook her head. “The next thing I remember is waking up in Cid’s lab.”
“Terra, are you alright?” Akasha asked, placing her hand over Terra’s.
Taking in a deep breath to calm herself, she nodded. “Yes, I’m fine. It’s just a big shock, that’s all. I’ll be alright.”
“What’s the third thing?” Cloud asked.
“What?” Cid asked.
“You said that you wanted to tell us three things. Well, what’s the third thing you wanted to tell us?”
“Oh, yes.” Cid suddenly remembered the main reason why he asked then to join him for breakfast. “Have any of you heard of Shin-Ra?” They all shook their heads ‘no’. “I didn’t think so. They are a top-secret organization, not as secret as SEELE is, but just as mischievous. It is rumored that they are experimenting on pokegirls, trying to create the ultimate pokegirl soldier. We have gotten reports that they are also experimenting with Threshold, forcing young children prematurely through Threshold, as young as nine years old!” Cid shook his head.
“So, what do you want us to do about it?” Tifa asked, ready for some action.
“Nothing.” Cid replied. “I’m telling you about them so that you can avoid them if possible. Not too many Tamers who get involved with the Shin-Ra ever manage to escape, many disappear. But I have a feeling that they will be interested in you, all of you.”
“Us?” Alicia asked, “why us?”
“Believe it or not, you all have similar backgrounds, many dealing with the Shin-Ra directly.” He just got blank looks, so he explained. “Michael, my colleagues and I believe that the Widow you killed was one of Shin-Ra’s Threshold experiments, that’s why it was too easy to kill. We’ve heard reports of some shady looking Tamers lurking about with Widows as part of their harem. One of these that we arrested we discovered that the Widow was a poor 12 year old girl who was forced through Threshold into a Widow.” Michael and Alicia were shocked at this news.
“What about us?” Cloud asked. “Why would Shin-Ra be interested in us?”
Cid though for a moment. “Cloud, how much can you remember clearly about your past?”
Cloud thought. “Not much, I remember being a Soldier, and a mission to some town....why?”
“Does ‘Super Soldier” ring any bells?” Cid asked.
Cloud thought for a moment before answering. “Yeah, why?”
“I believe that you were one of Shin-Ra’s experiments with their ‘Super Soldier Program’. The program, in essence, is to create a male version of a pokegirl, but without any of the symptoms of Threshold and physical changes. This would explain your increased strength, as well as other... enhancements. And as for the rest of your harem....I can’t see why they’d be interested in Yuffie or Tifa, no offence, since they’re common types of Pokegirl. But Aeris on the other hand.... you don’t see too many Tamers with a Megami in their harems, especially not one as powerful as Aeris. Just be careful on your journeys.”
Just as Cloud was going to ask Cid what they should do if they encounter the Shin-Ra, one of Cid’s aids approached the table. Stooping, he whispered something into Cid’s ear, then left quickly. “I’m sorry, but there are things that I have to tend to.” Getting up, he left the table and headed for one of the labs.
“I wonder what’s that all about?” Tifa asked.
“Don’t know.” Yuffie replied, cramming a croissant into her mouth, while pocketing some food with the other hand.
“We found it, Captian.” one of the aids said, leading Cid towards one of the dig sites.
“Are you sure?” Cid asked, the aid nodded. As they approached a large tented area, the sound of great earth movers and rock cutters filled the air, along with a large cloud of dust. Climbing down a series of ladders, they finally reached the edge of the dig area.
Seeing them arrive, one of the diggers ran up to the professor. “Captain, this is it.” He gestured towards the dig area, “We’ve finally found it, and it still registers power!”
Walking closer to the edge of the dig area, Cid surveyed the scene before him. amongst the many diggers and debris clearing machines, he was able to spot red metal emerging from beneath the stone, able to see the basic shape of the object. Seeing this, Cid could only say one word.
“Ragnarok.”
“So, where are you guys headed?” Akasha asked. The two Tamers, along with their girls stood in the large entrance to Cid’s mansion. Cloud and his harem looked like they were leaving, but not with their packs.
“We’re headed to the Gym.” Cloud replied, checking his supplies and Pokegear.
“He’s going to try and win a badge.” Tifa added, checking her fighting gloves. “Which one is it again?”
“The Water Badge.” Cloud mumbled, he was having problems hooking the wires into his Pokewatch from his glove.
“Is there a limit of how many Tamers can challenge at one time?” Michael asked. I really should start acting like a proper Tamer, he thought. At least if I fail to win a badge I’ll know what I need to improve.
“I don’t think so.” Aeris replied. “Why, are you thinking of trying?”
Michael nodded. “Yeah, why not?” Turning, he faced his girls. “As long as it’s alright with you girls.”
All three nodded their approval. “I’m willing to give it a try.” Alicia said, the others nodded that they felt the same.
“Well, shall we get going?” Cloud asked, motioning towards the door. Turning, the two Tamers and their harems left the compound, heading for the Navette Pokegirl Gym.
