And this chapter is dedicated to the mysterious \"AllenM\", who thought he was being so clever.

Thank you so much for reminding me to keep working on Red Rain, and letting me in on your HP fanfict. It\'s been a blast reading your work, and you captured my Rhynn self to perfection. Next time, don\'t sign your name. And don\'t think I won\'t recognize your writing.

Later, T\'mater

[PLEASE NOTE: this is the original chapter eight. I, because the original version was unavailable this morning before we got dial up connected to hte rv (in the middle of a big move), have decided to leave the original version here, and will post the version I\'ll be working with next chapter. Don\'t skip too far next chapter, I\'ll mark where it differs]

Chapter Eight: Burning

Amon saw the surge of water and stopped, dead center in the middle of the room. He swung Robin’s feet to the floor, and before he could think his split second plan through, cupped her head with his hands, dug his fingers into her hair, and kissed her.

“Burn,” he whispered against her mouth, sliding one hand down to wrap his arm firmly around her back. His tight grip on his powers loosened and fell away.

He felt Robin’s back arch as her hands threaded their way into his own hair, kissing him back just as hard. Flames erupted in the air around them. Only this time, as he released his own power, the flames turned blue. Burning without heat. They tickled the skin of his forearms where his sleeves had been pushed up and his hair wafted gently about his face as if stirred by an invisible wind.

Robin’s hair tickled his neck as it, too, lifted from her shoulders. Bare shoulders. He bent slightly, ducking his head and dropping a kiss on her neck. Her body jerked to his as she gasped. Her knee brushed his as her leg bent. He barely noticed that neither of his feet were touching the ground, instead he stood on a solid wisp of blue. Smaller flames curled up his calves.

A sphere of flame was created around them, the outer edge gaining a thin, solid crust. Water flowed along the crust, trying to break through and smother the flames and kill him and Robin, but the shield held.

Avaia stared at the fiery sphere in shock, before realizing the outside of the sphere was covered in water.

“Sakaki, check out the street. Do you see anyone?”

Skirting the sphere, Sakaki crossed to the window, peering outside. “Yeah! There’s some guy out there staring up at us—wait a minute. There’re two—THAT’S MICHAEL!”

Violet eyes flashed as Avaia strode to the window. A tear slid down her cheek, burning with violet flames. Sakaki and the others gasped as she opened the window, aimed, and threw the tear out onto the street. “USE IT MICHAEL!”

Michael heard her bellow, caught the fireball with the black pearl core, and looked at the man who was suddenly spouting gets of water at him. Stunned, the water hit an invisible barrier, parting around him. He stared at the tear.

“YOU LEAVE THEONE!ONE!” Michael yelled, throwing the tear at the man, who blinked in surprise.

“What do you think a mere fireball—” He blinked again, as the water suddenly stopped responding to his commands. “You—you took my power!”

Avaia leaned out the window. “You abuse it, you lose it, Bub! Now get lost!”

The man took one look at the red haired demon hanging out the window and ran for it. Michael watched him go, then looked up at the window. Avaia was still hanging out the window, watching the man run and shaking her fist at him when he paused at the corner down the street.

“KEEP GOING I CAN STILL SEE YOU!”

Laughing, Michael made his way into Robin’s apartment, where Karasuma and Doujima were staring at the sphere.

“Whoa. What is—” He looked at the water on the floor. “Shield?”

“Apparently,” Sakaki muttered, checking his gun. “What’re you doing out of your cage, anyway?”

Michael hadn’t even started to defend himself when Avaia ducked back into the room, slamming the window. Sakaki jumped and turned to face her, bowing his head in guilt.

“Sakaki, have you not even wondered what your powers might be?” She asked sharply, and his head shot up.

“Powers? Me?”

“You were thrown against the wall like all of us, were you not?”

“Uh yeah, but I thought…”

“I’m the only one who wasn’t affected, Sakaki. I’m not a witch or a Seed. I don’t have any powers, dormant or not, to be affected.” Doujima said softly.

“But I’m not—“

Avaia picked up a book from Robin’s shelf and chucked it at him. He saw it coming, ducked, and blinked as the book froze in midair, slowly rotating in place.

“You were saying?”

“So then...”

“You’re telekinetic. I have a sneaking suspicion that Michael was affected as well.”

Michael’s eyes widened under the sudden stares of his coworkers. His cheeks pinkened. “Um, well, actually--“

“Just show us.”

“But I don’t know--” He blinked when Avaia abruptly started walking toward him, grabbed his chin to hold him still, and stood on tip toes so she could plant a kiss right on his mouth.

“Just as I thought,” Karasuma muttered as Michael shimmered and turned into a gray kitty with light green eyes and purple glasses.

Said kitty blinked up at them and mewled piteously.

Doujima was practically doubled over laughing. Sakaki was staring with wide eyes and a dropped jaw, and Avaia giggled.

“Just fo-cus on t-turning back,” Avaia choked out.

Master Harry, who’d remained in the background the entire time, studying the crust of the sphere, emerged from behind it.

“I think now would be a good time to let them know they’re safe.”

Karasuma laid her hand against the crust, flinched a bit, and then narrowed her eyes in concentration.

Robin. Amon. It’s safe now.

A moment later the shield dissolved and the two occupants crashed to the floor.

Amon heard Miho’s voice and tightened his grip on Robin, pulling her to him as they dropped. He instinctively leaned back to keep from falling and crushing the girl.

Cheeks burning, Robin pulled away, refusing to meet the eye of anyone in the room. Until she spotted Avaia, however.

“You? What are you doing here?”
~*~

Avaia looked frantically between Michael and Amon, the only other two people in the room who knew who she was.

Amon’s hand settled on Robin’s lower back.

“Robin, this is Avaia Maieda. Avaia was the one who found you on the mountain road and called Michael.”

A shaky hand with slender fingers reached for Avaia, who extended her own hand in a friendly greeting.

But Avaia was staring at Amon, and when she saw his nod of permission, she squared her shoulders.

“Robin, I’m glad you’re doing so well. Amon and Michael have been keeping me up to date with your progress.”

“Why?” Startled, Robin only now noticed that the gray cat at Avaia’s side was wearing a pair of glasses that looked remarkably similar to those Michael usually wore.

“Well, you see--“

“Robin, Avaia is your sister.” Amon finished.
