Starve
He remained at Riho’s apartment with Guni. At night especially a few hours before dawn he would leave. He insisted that Guni stay at the apartment when he left. He hadn’t expected her to obey so he threatened to put her in a “bug box” if she followed him. That kept her firmly planted at the apartment with a pout on her face. To ease the demand he mentioned that he needed to know if Riho returned to the apartment and if she came back for any specific item, and no one could spy better than Guni could. That did seem to cheer her up a bit. Truth was he didn’t want her getting hurt.
He found Riho most nights, he learned her routine quite well, partially because she allowed him to follow her. Each night she allowed him to come closer to her. It wasn’t much at the time but it could mean something in the future. Every time he found her he witnessed the death of a human. He would stay near the body until N.O.S. arrived and allowed them to see just enough to recognize him before he fled into the night. He wasn’t sure but he thought once Yayoi had aimed at him.
Shido was becoming increasingly hungry he hadn’t seen Yayoi since their last fight. Sometimes when he watched Riho feed he desired to join her, the longing both terrified and sickened him. Shido knew that Cain had wanted him to experience these emotions, yet it felt sour not pure as Cain intended; this was not truly Riho. Shido saw Riho’s yellow eyes pick out his hiding place in the trees more than once. And when she switched killing in Bradock Park to Hanover Park, she first brought some helpless victim to Bradock waited until she found Shido and then fled to Hanover Park where she feed. It was as good a sign as any that she was beginning to trust him. But N.O.S. was also getting better weapons, better scopes, and in general more aggressive with their attacks. He had been lucky so far, and he knew that it was only luck that saved him.
Tonight he had left the apartment early. He was hungry and if he didn’t feed soon it would cost him speed when he next dealt with N.O.S. He also had a lingering fear that he would join Riho in her next prey. Shido hadn’t quite figured out how to get his meal, only that he wouldn’t kill for it.
That’s when he spotted blue black hair. Yayoi walked under the street lights disappearing in the darkness between only to reappear in the light once more. He felt his eyes change. Even if he wasn’t going to kill her, he still naturally hunted. He lowered his body and ran to the right side of her. She turned at the sound and unleashed her gun in the same instant. Shido ran behind her, his golden eyes flashing, she swiftly turned again pointing the gun at the silence of the night. Her heartbeat had quickened, he could just lightly hear it. Silently he approached her from behind. She still listened waiting for a sign of where to aim her gun next. His arms encircled her, one hand reaching out to lower her gun, and his voice whispered in ear, “Do you really need that?” His game was over now that he had spoken; she would recognize him. He lowered his head to partake of her neck. Her arms came gradually down. He smelled her perfume.
Her arms came up quickly and her gun collided with his head. He screamed with sudden pain and stumbled away from her.
“Yayoi its me!” She had her gun pointed at him.
“I should kill you right now.”
“What?” Shido gasped.
“You have done nothing as you said. Nothing! You have not stopped one murder but you are at every scene. You must be there when she does it.” His green eyes reflected his nervousness and guilt. “Have you helped her Shido? Have you feed?”
“No! I swore I would never hurt another human!”
“Yet you stand by and let them die!” He opened his mouth to explain but she yelled,
“Don’t! I am tire of this argument. I will kill you the next time I see you.” He could hear her quickened heartbeat and remembered the sweet taste of her blood; and growled.
“What do you want me to do Yayoi? Kill? So you can shoot me with a clean conscious?”
“Starve. If there is any decency left in you, you will choose to starve.” She pushed past him and walked away, her back towards him, like he was no threat, like he wasn’t a vampire, like he was merely another human who she could kill with her gun. *Starve?* His stomach knotted at the thought that he had lost Yayoi’s friendship. Yayoi had been more than a friend though, Yayoi had been his sole source of survival.
