The next few hours passed in a daze for Kyo, again he questioned his perception of reality and illusion. By the time Hatori arrived Kyo was wondering what events of the morning had actually happened. Was he ever even sick, or was that part of his dream too? Of course the fact that Hatori had a flat little piece of wood shoved in his mouth and was about to tell Kyo to say ‘Ahhh,’ was a good indicator that he had gotten sick at some point.

“Say Ahhh.”

“Ahhh.”

“Good. Have you been tired lately?”

Kyo nodded.

Hatori wrinkled his brow and ran his fingers along the sides of Kyo’s throat. “Does this hurt?”

“No.”

“Good.” He pressed on his midsection. “What about this?”

“No.”

“Good. Breathe.” He ordered taking out his stethoscope.

Kyo complied, wondering how many time Hatori could say ’good’ in one conversation.

“Good.” He put his supplies away. “I’d guess you’ve got a Gastrual Intestinal virus of some sort. Unfortunately, since it’s a virus there isn’t much I can do except treat the symptoms and wait for it to blow over.” Hatori paused. “Make sure you stay hydrated especially if you continue to vomit. Get lots of rest, be sure to eat as well as possible, and take two Tylenol every couple of hours or when you feel your fever is starting to pipe up again. Call me if you aren’t better in a couple of days.”

Kyo nodded.

“One last thing, Shigure said you’ve been having some night terrors.”

“Don’t call them that! It makes me sound like all wimpy or something.”

Hatori rolled his eyes. “Regardless, fevers can do really strange things to people’s dreams. I wouldn’t worry about them too much.”

“What if they don’t go away?” Kyo asked, revealing a little of the fear he kept locked behind his scowl.

“I’m no psychiatrist, but they probably don’t mean anything; you’re stressing out over nothing. They’re just dreams, Kyo.”

Kyo shuddered. “They’re so… real, it’s like I can’t tell the difference between what happened five minutes ago and what I dreamed.”

Hatori nodded, encouraging Kyo to talk.

“I mean this morning, Yuki kissed me on the forehead.”

Hatori’s eyes widened.

“But right after that Tohru came in dancing, and wearing a sailor suit. I know that didn’t happen.”

Hatori relaxed a little. “Do you think that Tohru’s outfit was symbolic in some way for your life?” He asked.

“No.”

“So neither are your night terrors, relax.”

Kyo nodded. “Thanks, Hatori. That uh… makes me feel a lot better.” Embarrassed he averted his eyes.

The doctor smiled. “I hope you recover soon.” He quietly slipped from Kyo’s bedroom leaving the exhausted kitty in silence.

Kyo flopped around a bit, and eventually got bored. Thirsty, he crept downstairs for some clear liquids. He heard Shigure and Hatori, cigarettes lit, talking on the porch. He wasn’t one for eavesdropping, but his curiosity got the best of him as he prepared some tea.

“How’s Yuki taking all of this?” Kyo heard Hatori ask.

‘All of what?’ Kyo wondered. ‘Is it Haru?’

“How should I know? How does Yuki take anything? He hides it behind that indifferent stare of his.” Shigure replied.

Hatori chuckled. “Those two are more alike than they realize. They bottle everything up until they explode. I think that’s really what happened this morning.” He paused. “I suppose everyone in this family does that though.”

“No, Aya never had a thought he didn’t express.”

After a bit of chuckling, there was a brief silence. ‘Were they talking about me?’ Kyo wondered.

“Did you talk to Kyo about his dreams?” Shigure asked.

“I told him they were not of consequence and to forget about them.”

“Good. It might be wise to convince Yuki of that also.”

‘What the hell?’ Kyo wondered sipping his tea.

“I don’t think he will be so easily persuaded.” Hatori asserted. “You should try though. He still hasn’t forgiven me.”

Kyo remembered how traumatized Yuki was when Hatori erased him from the memories of his friends when he was a kid. He stiffened. ‘Hatori can be a real bastard sometimes.’ He recalled how suspicious the rat got whenever Hatori was around Tohru. ‘Hell, I get suspicious when he’s around Tohru.’ He couldn’t imagine having her ripped from his life. He shuddered just thinking about it. ‘See! I’m not a fruit!’ He thought. ‘Hatori was right; those dreams are ridiculous!’ Kyo started to fantasize about Tohru.

“He’d listen to Tohru.” Shigure paused. “Or Kyo even.”

Thus interrupting Kyo’s fantasy. ‘That damn dog’s got brain damage, he won’t listen to me. WHY THE HELL WOULD I WANT HIM TO!!!’

“Maybe you should see if Tohru will talk to him, Kyo might be a little too risky yet.” Hatori replied.

Now the kitty was really confused.

“You could be right. I imagine Yuki will try to withdraw from him even more after this morning.” Kyo heard Shigure yawning.

As much as he wanted to listen to the rest of the conversation, he knew their cigarettes would burn out soon. He crept quietly up the stairs. He just reached the top when he heard the door slide in its track. He dashed quickly to his room and hopped in bed, burying himself under his piles of covers.

The remainder of the afternoon passed without incident. Kyo’s sleep was fitful at best, but there was no Akito looming around his dreams to cause him too much distress. What he saw instead were the passing images of fuzzy dreams, those dreams you have when you pass freely in and out of consciousness, like after you hit ‘snooze’ in the morning.

A gentle rap on his door startled Kyo out of one of such dreams. “Come in.”

Haru poked his head through the door. “Heard you were sick.”

Kyo nodded. “I’m feeling a lot better. Is school out already?” He asked glancing at the clock.

“Yeah.” Haru slid in the door followed by Yuki.

“I have your books.” Yuki said curtly. “I’m glad you’re feeling better.” He placed the stack of books on Kyo’s desk avoiding eye contact. “If you have any questions… well, the lessons were rather simple today so…” Yuki nodded and ducked out of the room.

“Simple for you, damn rat.” Kyo muttered.

Haru laughed. “Tell me about it. Anyway, since Tohru has to work tonight, I’ve been recruited to make your dinner. Unless of course you want blackened something or other. I assume you don’t want leak soup.”

“Damn right I don’t!” He exclaimed. “That damn rat is hopeless.” He added.

Haru sighed. “Yeah, well… what do you want?”

“I don’t care, just no leaks.” Haru nodded and started to leave.

“Um… thanks.” Kyo said awkwardly staring at his feet.

Haru smiled. “I think you’ve been softened.”

“THE HELL I HAVEN’T!” Kyo yelled.

“Getting defensive are we?”

“AHH!!! GET THE HELL OUTA HERE!” He chucked a pillow in Haru’s direction. The cow ducked and fled, closing Kyo’s door behind him.

Kyo quickly grew uneasy. He was again beckoned at the idea of a cup of tea. Actually, now that he thought about it, he was famished too. ‘Maybe I can have a snack or something.’

He teetered out into the hallway, discovering he was a little dizzy. He felt wimpy, but he decided to take a break on the stairs. ‘Just as long as no one sees.’ He thought. He could hear agitated voices emanating from Yuki’s room. He found himself eavesdropping for the second time that day.

“No, Haru.” He heard Yuki say shortly.

“Why not?”

“You know why, it wouldn’t work!”

“It won’t be like last time.”

“You’re right, it won’t, because it isn’t going to happen!”

Kyo’s pulse picked up. He was right about Yuki and Haru, and Haru was trying to rekindle the old flame. Kyo bristled. He again found himself growing jealous, which he realized didn’t make any sense. He wasn’t even sure what he was jealous of. He crept noiselessly downstairs, suddenly much less hungry.

Once downstairs he commenced making tea as loudly as possible, thoroughly pissed off at the situation. How dare Haru use Kyo’s illness to try to sway Yuki into submission. It was his fault he couldn’t keep him around! It was his fault he couldn’t protect him from Akito! Kyo shuddered as he remembered his own failed attempt to protect Yuki. ‘But that was a dream. In real life I wouldn’t be formless!’ He slammed the cupboard door after extracting his cup. ‘WHY THE HELL WOULD I WANT TO PROTECT THAT DAMN RAT?!?’ He flopped angrily around the kitchen, waiting for his water to boil.

Haru appeared in the doorway looking a little flustered. “Hey.” He said upon entrance. “Did you decide what you wanted to eat?” He asked.

Kyo shrugged. “It doesn’t matter. We could have ordered out, you know.”

“I didn’t mind. I wanted to come over, anyway.”

Kyo’s eyes narrowed as he felt his blood start to boil. ‘I thought Shigure was the scheming bastard.’ He thought.

Yuki descended the stairs, purposefully avoiding eye contact with the occupants of the kitchen.

“Yuki, wait. I wanted to…” Haru called.

The mouse slid on his shoes and slipped out without acknowledging his cousins.

“Apologize.” He finished, dejected.

“I see I’m not the only one he’s been ignoring.” Kyo commented as he poured his tea.

Haru shrugged. “Sometimes he can be so thick.” He sighed. “I wish he could just see what’s best for him.”

“And you know what’s best for him?!?” Kyo snapped, almost protectively. He gasped; he surprised himself.

Haru blinked, a little taken back by Kyo’s sudden outburst. “I just… well, he’d be so much happier if…”

“He’s a big boy, you stupid cow!” Kyo interrupted. “He can make up his own mind if you’d let him! Quit trying to act like you know everything when you don’t!!!”

Haru smiled triumphantly.

“WHAT?!? WHY THE HELL ARE YOU SMILING LIKE THAT?!?” Kyo demanded. No comment from Haru, only a bigger smile. “God DAMNET!!! YOU’RE GETTING WORSE THAN SHIGURE!” Still no comment. Kyo huffed and stormed upstairs, leaving Haru chuckling behind him.

‘That Haru’s too much sometimes. And he’s not even gone black.’

Dinner was tense. No one said much of anything to anyone, save Shigure who, as per usual, kept babbling on about nothing in particular trying to get a rise out of one of the trio. Haru smiled at Yuki, who glared back at him, inspiring a glare from Kyo, directed at both the cow and the rat.

“Oh come on you guys!” Shigure poked. “You’re worse than a bunch of high school girls! Are you three in some kind of love triangle or something?”

“NO!” Yuki and Kyo snapped in unison.

“I’ll take that as a yes!” He teased.

“You’re disgusting.” Yuki stated.

“Oh come on! It’ll be so much better if we all just express our feelings for each other! Then we can all enjoy each other’s company in peace and love… among other things.” He added mischievously.

“YOU SICK BASTARD!” Kyo shouted, sending Shigure flying across the room.

Leg twitching Shigure cried, “I thought you were sick, Kyo!” Tears poured down his face.

The rest of the meal passed in silence, except for Shigure, who whimpered every now and then. Kyo cleared his plate and thumped upstairs to work on his homework. He was halfway through his math homework when he heard a slight rap on the door.

“Yeah, who is it?” He asked.

Tohru poked her head though the opening. “Oh, you’re up!” She chirped. “You must be feeling better then!”

Kyo nodded. “Yeah, I’m fine.”

“How was your day?” She asked. “Were you able to get anymore sleep?”

“Yeah, I guess I slept a little.”

“No more nightmares then?”

He shook his head. “Just weird dreams. I think Yuki was crying in one of them.” He told her, remembering his vision of the rat with uncontrollable tears streaming down his cheeks. “PROBABLY BECAUSE I PUNCHED HIM IN THE FACE!!!”

“Um… you must be feeling better!” Tohru’s smile wavered a bit, but she seemed to be genuinely happy of Kyo’s recovery. “I’ll bring you some tea!” She said, disappearing out of his door.

Kyo smiled. She was so… Tohru. Yuki passed by his door, grabbing Tohru’s hand briefly as he passed. He leaned down and whispered something in her ear. Smile gone. Kyo grumbled and climbed in bed. ‘Damn rat ruins every happy moment I’ve got.’ He thrust the covers over his head and squeezed his eyes shut until his threatening tears subsided. He waited in agony for Tohru’s return.
