Summary: Sakano and K discuss a rather delicate situation.
K paced the roof of NG nervously, holding a cigarette with a shaking hand. He took one final puff of the stick before flicking it over the edge of the building. The blonde promptly pulled another from the pack and lit it.
Earlier in the day Sakano had been called out by the hospital. His wife Sakura had just gone into labour and she’d requested that he be there during the birth. Sakano looked so happy as he hung up the phone, dashing away to grab his jacket and rush to be at his wives side.
It was later on in the evening when Sakano called him, asking to meet with him on the roof of NG. As soon as he heard the producers voice he knew something was wrong. Had the worst had happened? The one thing he feared the most? K had never felt fear before in his life. Not even when faced with death out in the battlefield during his days as a soldier. But right now, K was terrified.
He heard the door to the roof open behind him, slow footsteps walking towards him.
“K-San…..”
K felt a shiver run through his body. When was the last time Sakano called him K-San? It sounded like he’d been crying. That wasn’t a good sign. Slowly, he turned to face the producer. His best friend, the one person he cared most for in the world.
“I assume Sakura-Chan had the baby then?” He asked carefully. Sakano was standing rigid, looking down at his feet. A small motion of his head indicated yes to his question. K threw away what remained of his cigarette and pushed his hands deep into his pockets, taking a cautious step towards the smaller man. “And, how is he…she?”
Sakano had still to look up at him. “It’s a little girl. Haruhi she’s called. She’s so beautiful…with her fair skin and blonde hair”
K felt his gut clench. So the baby was his after all. This was the worst case scenario he hoped wouldn’t happen
The manager stepped back a little when Sakano finally looked up at him. His eyes were not filled with the tears that K expected. Instead, they were filled with deep hatred which shook K to his very core. Never before had he seen such a look on the producers face.
“S-Sakano…I can explain”
“No need! Sakura told me enough” The mans voice was a dangerously low whisper. “She told me how you showed up at our apartment. how you two got drunk. How you two fucked in our bed” He winced at the use of harsh language, Sakano rarely ever swore.
K felt like he’d lost the power of speech. He couldn’t even begin to form words of an apology. But how does one apologise for something like this? ‘Oh! Sorry I knocked up your wife!’
Yeah that would go down a treat…
“I-It was an accident…”
“An accident?! what did she do? Slip and fall on your cock? Oops!”
The smaller man rushed forward and grabbed his shirt with both hands, tugging down hard so they were at eye level. “All those months K-San. All those months you greeted me with a smile and coffee every morning. You asked me how Sakura and the baby were doing, knowing the whole time that this baby could very well have been yours”
K threw up his arms and growled in rage. “God Sakano it’s not like I wanted to get her pregnant! We used protection for crying out loud. It’s not my fault the damn condom split”
In a flash K found himself flat on his back, the side of his face throbbing. Sakano had punched him, hard. For such a small man he could really pack a punch when he was upset.
“Why did you not tell me sooner K-San. Why leave me to find out like this. Do you know how much it hurt for me to look down at that baby and realise that not a single gene in her body was mine” A sob escaped the mans mouth before he dropped to his knees in front of him, his face buried in his hands.
K sat up and crossed his leg beneath him, rubbing at the swelling on his face gingerly. “I guess I was being selfish. To be honest, I was hoping it wouldn’t end this way. I never wanted to hurt you Sakano, that was the last thing I wanted to do”
He reached a hand towards the broken producer but had it slapped away.
“Sakano…I think you need to hear the full story of what happened that night”
*~Flashback~*
Tonight…Tonight he was going to do it. The fact that both of them were married meant nothing to him anymore. He had fallen in love with Sakano a long time ago and now was the time to confess his love. K was pretty sure the whole thing would end in disaster, Sakano was straight and married after all, but this was something he couldn’t keep to himself anymore.
As far as he knew, Sakura would be out with some of her workmates tonight. This would be the perfect time for him to talk to Sakano about his feelings. Armed with a bottle of very expensive wine, Sakanos favourite, he rung the doorbell and waited.
“Ahhh K-san!” He was surprised when Sakura answered the door. “Touji mentioned you would be coming over this evening. He’s really sorry but something came up and he had to head over to his mothers. Come on in, he should be home in a little while.
K’s heart sank a little but still he smiled brightly and stepped into the hallway, slipping off his shoes at the door. “I’m surprised to see you actually Sakura-Chan, Sakano said you were going out this evening. Oh! Here I brought some wine if you want to open it” He handed the smiling woman the bottle of wine and followed her into the living room. “Oh that!” Sakura headed towards the kitchen with the bottle “Some of the girls in the office have come down with a nasty cold and couldn’t make it, so we just decided to cancel and arrange something for another time”. K made a mental note to find out when “another time” would be.
As Sakura came back from the kitchen with two glasses for the wine the phone rang. She rushed off to get it and returned a few minutes later. “That was Touji, it seems his uncle has had a stroke and his mother is in a bit of a state, he’ll be staying with her for the evening. He said to apologise to you”.
“Oh…” K stood up from the couch “That’s okay. I suppose I can go home and tidy up the mess, I’ve been putting it off for so long now”. He raised an eyebrow when Sakura suddenly stepped in front of him, blocking his way towards the front door.
“Actually K-San….there is something I wanted to talk to you about, and now seems like the best time to do it”. The woman gestured towards the couch and K sat down again, wonder what it was she wanted to talk about. Could she have possibly realised the feelings he held for her husband? He sure hoped not. Sakura poured them both a glass of the wine and dashed off towards the bedroom, emerging about 5 minutes later clutching a small black leather book to her chest. She looked extremely nervous and a little upset.
“Before Touji and I got married, I was cleaning out his old apartment getting ready for the move here. I came across this” Sakura held up the book to show him. “I didn’t realise what this was until I opened it to have a look” She flicked through the book, stopping on a page near the end and handed it to him. “I-I just wanted to know K-San…what sort of relationship do you have with my husband?”
K looked puzzled and took the book from her hands. It turned out to be one of Sakanos old journals. The blonde couldn’t believe what he was reading. The journal spoke of Sakanos engagement to Sakura, how the man had felt pressured into it by his family. It went on to speak about how he loved Sakura dearly but only as a friend, and that he was deeply in love with someone else. The next page of the journal revealed the person to be him. It seemed that all this time, they both had feelings for each other and neither of them noticed it.
“I married Touji knowing that he would never love me the same way he loves you. I’ve seen the way you look at him K-San, I know you feel something for him too. This is why I have to know” K felt his heart break when he looked up from the journal at Sakura, her big brown eyes filled with unshed tears. “Is there something between you and Touji?”
He closed the book carefully and placed it on the coffee table in front of him.
“We’re nothing more than friends Sakura-Chan, I assure you. But you’re not wrong about my feelings for him either. Since we met all those years ago at NG I’ve always felt this strange attraction to him. I can’t explain it really…”
A loud sob cut him off mid sentence. Sakura had her face buried in her hands sobbing loudly. “Why not me K-San? Why can he not love me the same way he loves you?” The distraught woman grabbed her glass off the table and drained it in one gulp. She promptly picked up the bottle of wine and filled her glass again.
A couple of hours later the pair was sitting on the couch together. Sakura had her head resting on Ks shoulder while K had his arm slung around her back. The bottle of wine K had provided was now empty, along with two others from Sakanos wine rack. The two were completely intoxicated and giggling like idiots. It had taken K a long time to calm Sakura down, and once she had they had spent their time talking about anything and everything.
“I can see why Touji likes you so much K-San. You’re so easy to talk to and you’re so incredibly handsome” She giggled like a schoolgirl before turning serious “Maybe I should try and be like you K-San. I should grow out my hair a little and act a little crazy sometimes. Maybe then Touji will really notice me”. K tightened his arm around her shoulder, his hand running up and down her arm in a soothing motion. “You don’t need to change Sakura-Chan. You’re beautiful, smart, funny...Sakano is lucky to have you in his life at all. He’d be crazy to give….”
For the second time this evening K had been cut off mid sentence, only this time it wasn’t by Sakuras sobs, but by her urgent kiss. Without thinking, he pulled the slender woman onto his lap and wrapped his arms around her waist, kissing her back with equal force.
“Let me show you just how special you are” K groaned into her neck. Standing easily with Sakura wrapped around his body, K made his way towards the couples bedroom.
*~*
Sakano sat there shocked, looking at K with wide eyes. “S-She knew?”
K nodded his head and took the opportunity to shift closer to the smaller man. “Yeah she knew, and she married you knowing. You have no idea how much she loves you man. She works so hard to make your marriage a happy one…and then I come along and screw it all up”
“It’s not entirely your fault K-San. I realise that now. If Sakura-Chan had said something then maybe I wouldn’t have gone ahead with the wedding. I do love her K-San, with all my heart. But, not the way she wants to be loved. It wasn’t fair on her”
They both sat there in silence for what seemed like an eternity. When K couldn’t stand it any longer, he reached out to Sakano again and placed a hand on his shoulder. This time his hand wasn’t batted away, instead Sakano leaned in closer to the touch.
“So what are you going to do now?”
Sakano shook his head, a hopeless look on his face. “I don’t know K-San. I just don’t know anymore. I-I can’t be Sakauras husband anymore. Not know that I know…”
K nodded his head, only half understanding what Sakano meant.
“I think the three of us need to sit down together and discuss our situation. Let’s head down to the hospital and see Sakura-Chan”
He stood up and dusted off the seat of his trousers before offering his hand to Sakano. The producer took it, though reluctantly, and stood up with him, brushing the dust from his own trousers. Sakano began to walk towards the roof door, but stopped half way there.
“I wish we’d known about our feelings sooner Claude. Maybe this whole mess could have been avoided then”
K watched as Sakano continued on his way towards the door. It was good to hear the man call his name again.
Hopefully the three of them could come to sort of agreement that would make them all happy again.
