Chapter VII

Heads or Tails

He looked down at Gendo with utter revulsion on his face, he couldn’t believe that even he would go that far, to do that to a fourteen year old child…he said nothing but put the gun down on the counter behind him and poured a glass of his strongest drink. Downing a whisky glass full of 90 proofs Absinth he shivered and then refaced Ikari, picking up his gun in the progress.

“So then what happened?”

Gendo polished off the rest of his drink before continuing.

“Dr. Akagi and Major Katsuragi forced their way into the room shortly afterwards. I made orders that Rei was to be taken to the infirmary for a full medical scan and treated for any injury; the boy was not to leave her side. I then left and made arrangements for him to move into the apartment next to hers, which he did two weeks ago, though, according to the surveillance, he spends almost all his time at Reis side, even at night.”

“So you’re doing what ‘Lilith’ said to do?”

“Yes.”

“Why?” asked the man shrewdly

“I don’t know…fear perhaps.” He added tapping the table.

The barkeep poured him another whisky and left the open bottle next to the glass infront of Gendo. As Gendo drank again the man simply looked at him, unsure of how to continue, deciding to change the topic slightly he asked a simple question.

“So why are you here?”

“What do you mean?” ask Gendo sipping his whisky

“Why are you telling me all this, I mean why would you travel over 5900 miles to see a man who you left on the worst terms with,” he commented indicating the gun, “and tell him about a problem that you started which, by the way, you could probably be fixed by going to see a shrink and lots of anger management. I mean why the fuck did you come to me Gendo? A man you betrayed and tried to kill.”

“Because you’re the only one I feel can help me, Adam.”

The man chuckled lightly at the mention of his name. Gendo, over his whisky glass, gave the man a strange look.

“What?”

“Nothing, I just bet that’s a bit of irony for you.”

“What is?”

Adam smiled slightly and tilted his head slightly as he looked at Gendo.

“Why that 15 years ago you captured and Angel you called ‘Adam’ and now here you are asking a man of the same name, who you betrayed, for help about something related to the First. That’s funny.”

“Will you help me?”

“With what? All you’ve done is told me a sad story, you haven’t actually told me what it is you want.”

“Do you know what is going on? Do you know anything? I know what you did to the Dead Sea Scrolls; I know you took a piece before you disappeared. What did it say? Does it have anything to do with what is happening? Does it say the name of that boy; does it say what he is?”

“Huh, if I disappeared how is it that you are here now? Next time I need to do a better job of it. Yes, Gendo Ikari, I did steal a section of that Scroll, and no.”

“No?” Ask Gendo lowering his glass and staring at him. “What…”

“I will not tell you the contents of that section, but yes, it does relate to that boy, but you will never know what it is. I will never tell you and the only copy was destroyed long ago, I’m afraid you travelled here for nothing, leave.” Finished Adam; with a small, knowing smirk on the corner of his lips.

Gendo downed the remaining half of his whisky then, after slowly placing it back onto the bar top, pulled of his right glove. Holding his palm up for Adam to see his eyes widened in anger and surprise, the embryo recovered from the First Angel was imbedded into Gendos hand, the eye of the thing moved and looked at him, it was conscious?

“It has already been set into motion, my scenario will come to pass Adam, nothing you or anyone else can stop that now, just tell me, tell me what that boy is I must know.”

“You fucking idiot!” Yelled Adam, rage flooding him, he never learns does he? “Your actually going through with it aren’t you? You can’t become a God Gendo and if you try to become one for your own selfish reasons then it will end in nothing but pain, for that is the fate of men like you, men like you and all the poor souls you drag down with you.” He finished sadly, weakly.

“Get out; leave; go back to your precious NERV and your monstrosities. You know me, if I say I wont tell you something then I wont tell you and you of all people should know that that is true. Just get out; I will let you live, just so you can be there to see your world collapse around you.” Finished Adam coldly, steadying his gun on Gendo.

Gendo, knowing that this was pointless, rose and turned to leave. As he reached the door and was about to open it, he was stopped by a call from Adam, still at the bar.

“One thing before you leave, Ikari. I will tell you this, that boy is something beyond an Angel, he is not normal, not even by their standards, something beyond belief, beyond understanding and even the First feared that child and what he is capable of. If I were you I would make sure to do whatever Rei, or ‘Lilith’, wants when concerning him, I have a feeling to not do so would be detrimental to your good health.” He finished with a wicked smile on his lips, looking into Gendos surprised eyes.

“Now get out.” He finished simply

Without another word he left, pulling his hood up as he walked out into the raging thunderstorm covering the city. As the door slammed shut, Adam waited a moment before walking around from behind the bar and heading to the door. Locking it he flipped one of the six switches on the wall next to it, outside the glowing green and red sign went out, throwing the whole alleyway into darkness.

“13 years.” He said quietly to himself, pulling out a Marlboro cigarette and, lighting it, he turned and return to the bar. Picking up the half full bottle of whisky on the counter he swigged some of it before taking the seat Gendo had just vacated, placing the empty gun onto the countertop.

“13 years,” he repeated, again taking a swig of whisky, “I wonder how this will change things? I wonder what will happen with Third Impact now, Gendo no longer has a hope in hell of getting what he wants, not that he had any chance to begin with.” He mussed to himself swigging the whisky again.

The world was changing, changing beyond the scenarios created by SEELE or Gendo Ikari. Everything was changing and the presence of the boy meant that this had already happened once before, at least once. Adam swigged the whisky again, thinking about a part of what had been written in the last section of the Dead Sea Scrolls.

“…and Deaths Child shall appear, after the world dies thrice, the child of death shall come forth after the 11th messengers fall, summoned by the Mother and the Mothers Guardian. This child shall befriend and love the children of the Mother and shall protect the lives of the Guardians, ensuring that they can protect their children. And shall it be that Deaths Child shall come and destroy the world meant to be and end the lives of…huh…” he trailed off with a smirk, drinking from the whisky bottle.

As he sat there, thinking on what he had just learned; the thick smoke of his bar entering his lungs, a realisation came to him, he had to leave. He had to go to NERV, to Tokyo-3, to that place where she rests, pinned to a crucifix. He didn’t have to, he had free will, he had a chance to choose, to decide not to, but all the same…

“…a Messenger made by a Lilim, which shall aid Deaths Child…huh…” he mussed aloud to himself, drinking more of the whisky.

Leaning back and letting the warm feeling of the liquid to spread down his body, he thought about what he should do. After a few moments he decided to resort to an old and test method of deciding difficult things. Leaning forwards he reached into his pocket and pulled out a coin. Resting it over his thumb and index finger he thought for a moment before saying aloud.

“Heads I will go…tails I shall stay…”

With that he flipped the coin. It span in the air, hovering above his head, as his eyes followed it. A blur of silver and grey and shadows, then it began to fall and Adam caught it as it became level with his face, his right hand swiping it out of the air. Slamming his hand down flat onto the bar top he waited for a moment before raising his hand and looking at the coin. Seeing which side it was he chuckled and smirked.

“Looks like well be meeting again sooner than I would have wanted Gendo.” Said Adam, downing the remaining third of the bottle of whisky bottle with a shiver.

“This promises to be interesting.”
