This Mortal Journey

The salty tang of the ocean gave Leon a sense of peace as he gazed the dying sun staining the ocean with deep reds and oranges. He glanced upwards to note that the sky taking on those dusky hues of purples, rose pinks and even some weird shades of blues as the birth of the twilight peeked out but soon would blossom into full form. "It's sort of like the birth and death of a phoenix all at once." He said.
No one heard him except the ocean, the wind and perhaps a sea gull or two. Not that any of his friends or family would have recognized him anymore if any of them were still alive. The years had rolled by blending one into the other, until they were a blur. He was still lean but greyer, his youth all but fleeing with time.
He'd spent his life searching for meaning after D's disappearance. His work just wasn't the same afterwards. He left vowing that he'd find D, his D, with the mysterious smirk and his purple and golden eye. "Where are you D?" He wondered.
Did it matter any more? Soon he'd be beyond caring as time pushed him forward to his final journey. "Should I give up? Is that what this means?" he said
He blinked back tears as he rested his chin upon his knees, arms around his legs. What meaning did his life have? He 'd started his search in his state first and turned up nothing. Restlessness stirred within his soul. His job no longer sustained him the way it used to. He stopped buying cigarettes and beer. Racy magazines no longer held his attention. The world he had known slipped away from him, or was it he who slipped away. Regardless, soon the need to keep moving took over. He traveled searching, until he sometimes forgot who it was he was looking for. He saw new places and met new people, learning their languages and cultures. At times, he would stop at a place and stay for a while, helping the folk who lived there. Not as a police man, though those skills servim wim well from time to time, rather he learned to do a variety of tasks. His journey became the meaning.
That didn't stop him from continuing to look for D, but his life gained more meaning than it had previously had. Now, here he was, sitting on the beach alone. Watching another day ending, giving birth to another night. He learned so much, but what did he really know? He had researched more on the stories he learned from D, delving more into world mythology. When he came across the description of Kamis, and their natures, he understood more.Did he really know more of what he wanted to? No. "I have so much to ask you D." he told the empty waters, not caring he spoke his thoughts out loud.
"I'm so tired now, I just want to close my eyes." He murmured.
"I’m tired of looking D, but I don't want to give up. It took me along time to understand and accept loving you. I wish..."
He never finished that sentence. His eyes closed as the final rays of the sun disappeared and the wind carried away his final breath.
A younger Leon looked down upon the body of an old man curled up. Even in his final sleep there seemed a painful wistfulness on the worn face.
"Huh, so this is what it's like." He said.
A few feet away, a staircase of light formed and down it strolled the very being he had searched for his entire life. "Hello Leon." Count D said as he came to a stop before young Leon.
Leon blinked, rubbing his eyes, wondering if the newly dead could hallucinate. "D? Is it really you?" He whispered, afraid to reach out.
"It is I." The count confirmed, reaching out to take Leon into his embrace.
"Come my Lion, I know that you have much to say, but we must go now."
He took Leon's arm and led him toward the stairs of light. Leon looked at the count, "Where are we going?" He asked.
Count D smiled, after all this time, Leon had used 'we.' Perhaps there was hope.
He looked at Leon, flashing him a smile of the purest happiness. "we are going home my beautiful golden lion."
Leon smiled back. His mortal journey was over but his search was a success. "Home, I really like the sound of that."
