A Mother\'s Love

Rating: R for some violence and bad language

Characters: Mai (OC), Hatori, Akito, Momiji, Haru, Shigure, Yuki, Kyo and Tohru.

Author’s note: This was supposed to be a one shot deal but the fic has decided that it didn’t want to be a one shot deal. Please leave feedback so that I know if I should continue or not.

Chapter one

Mai stepped out into the bright sunlight. She was a tall woman with dark brown, almost black eyes, and brown hair. She was 37 years old. Mai looked out over the land before. She was standing in front of the main house with many smaller homes going down a lane. This was the Sohma estate. She had known about the Sohma curse at the time that she married her husband a Sohma. She worked for the Sohma’s, well she was more like a surrogate mother to those that were cursed and rejected by their mothers. She was also a psychologist and was there for those of the Sohma’s that had dark secrets.

She turned when she heard a young almost girlish voice off in the distance. It was Momiji and he was with a girl that Mai had never seen before. She was a very pretty young girl.

\"Hello Mai,\" Momiji said as he ran up to her.

\"Hello Momiji, who is your friend?\"

\"Her name is Tohru and she knows about the curse.\"

Bowing slightly, \"It’s nice to meet you.\"

Smiling, \"It is nice to meet you too. My name is Mai. I am a surrogate mother to those who are rejected by their biological mothers.\"

\"So you are related to the Sohma’s?\"

\"No not really, but Akito has allowed to stay anyway.\"

\"Probably because she is one of the few who will stand up to him.\" Replied Hatori as he walked up behind them, \"Tohru I am glad that you came. If you could come with me.\"

Looking at Tohru, \"Don’t worry Hatori is a nice man,\" replied Mai.

Tohru gave her a weak smile and followed Hatori into his office.

\"What do you think he is talking to her about?\" Asked Momiji.

\"I don’t know. Are you hungry?\"

\"Yes.\"

They both walked back into the main house and into the kitchen. Momiji sat down at the table and Mai got him something to eat.

\"How is Akito doing?\"

Setting a plate of food down in front of him, \"the same as usual. He had a fever today.\" Looking at Momiji, \"But it is nothing for you to worry about.\"

Just then Shigure walked into the room.

\"Shigure what are you doing here?\" Asked Momiji.

\"I just had a feeling that Tohru was here.\"

\"She is talking with Hatori.\"

\"I wonder what about?\"

\"My guess would be that he is trying to tell her to stay away from all of the Sohma’s.\" replied Mai.

\"Why?\" asked Momiji.

\"Why else. He doesn’t want to see anyone else get hurt.\"

Shigure sighed, \"That makes sense after what happened to him.\"

Mai just nodded, \"I am going to take this food up to Akito.\"

\"Do you want some back up?\" Asked Shigure.

\"No, he had a fever earlier. Besides I can normally handle Akito’s temper.\"

Mai walked down the hall and upstairs with the tray of food. When she got to his door she knocked. There was no response from inside the room.

\"Akito I brought you something to eat.\"

\"Come in.\"

Mai slid the door open. She walked into the room and set the small tray of food down on the table. She looked toward the window and found Akito looking out the window at something, \"So she came to the main house.\"

\"Who?\"

\"Tohru.\"

\"Yes she did.\"

\"I wonder why.\"

\"I don’t know. Please come eat.\"

Akito came over to the table and sat down on some pillows. He slowly began to eat the food.

\"Has your fever gone down any?\"

Mai tried to put her hand against his forehead, but Akito moved his head away from her hand. She just sighed she didn’t want to piss him off. She watched him eat the food and then when he was done she took the tray, \"Get some rest ok. You need to get better.\"

\"What difference does it make?\" He muttered.

\"Because I don’t like seeing you ill, and stop acting like you are all ready dead.\"

Akito just glared at her as she left his room. The minute she slid the door shut she heard something hit the wall. Mai just sighed and walked back down into the kitchen. Hatori was there sitting at the table.

\"How is he?\"

\"As moody as ever. At least he ate something. So what did you talk to Tohru about?\"

\"I tried to tell her to stay away from us, but I don’t think that it did any good. There is just something about her...\"

\"Some people just have that effect,\" Mai said as she put the dishes into the sink.

\"Well I will go see how Akito is doing.\"

Mai watched Hatori leave and saw Haru walk by the room.

Walking to the door, \"Hello Haru.\"

Turning towards her, \"Hello.\"

\"How was school?\"

\"Fine.\"

\"You didn’t get into any fights today did you?\"

\"No I am just going to go up to my room and do my homework.\"

Mai watched him leave. She wondered why he was being so glum. She was almost tempted to ask him if he had been in a fight with Yuki but changed her mind.
