The Devil’s Curiosity
Father Remington was on confession duty on a nice Saturday night. Sister Kate had scolded him for always babying Rosette and this was how he was to “atone” for it. The sun was going down and no one had been in all day. It was exceptionally quiet since Azmaria, Satella and Rosette and gone into the city to do some shopping and get supplies and food, but they always ended up going on endless shopping sprees with Satella’s money. Chrno had stayed behind because he wasn’t “feeling well”, but Rosette knew something was on his mind and she wanted to give him some space since she knew something was wrong, and maybe a little time alone would do the trick.
Remington was just about to leave early when the short, red clothed figure of Chrno walked through the doors letting the shimmering shine of the setting sun into the holy church of Magdalene. Remington wondered what Chrno would be doing in here, but realized that just because he was a devil didn’t mean he had no right to go into a church. Chrno was startled thinking no one would be in there.
“Oh…Father Remington, I didn’t know you would be in here.” Chrno stuttered.
“Well…You know how Sister Kate can be sometimes. However, I am more surprised that you are in here. What has brought you here?” Remington wondered the possibilities in his head.
“I…wanted to make…a confession.” Chrno was looking at the ground as if ashamed. Remington was surprised by this statement, but didn’t show it as Chrno spoke more. “I’ve been having thoughts lately, but I didn’t know who to go to. So I figured maybe a Father would listen to me.” Chrno looked up at Remington “would you listen to me?” Remington nodded his head and they each went into the separate compartments of the confession both.
“So Chrno, tell me what has brought you here tonight.” Chrno had a look in his eyes as if he couldn’t say what he wondered about because of what Remington might say, but was finally able to say it.
“I have been wondering about…what its like to be with….another man” He looked away from Remington’s gaze and then turned back when he heard Remington speak.
“Well…..that’s a very common thing Chrno. There is no need to be ashamed by it. Its something everyone goes through at one point or another.” Chrno looked up and spoke again.
“I know, but I have been having this burning desire every night. I even found myself changing into my true form because of it. I am so worried, I feel like I am killing rosette with these thoughts and desires. Because if I go into my full form, then that isn’t that draining her life from her.” Chrno eyes began to tear up with these thoughts of hurting his beloved Rosette. Remington finally understood the full reason that he had come. He felt as if he was committing murder by these dark and forbidden desires.
“Chrno….I don’t believe that you are draining life from Rosette. If it’s just your body that changes and not the amount of power you use, then nothing is being taken, maybe a minute or two, but that’s it.” Chrno began to wipe the tears from his eyes and cheeks and then asked Remington a question.
“Is there any way to get rid of this burning desire, just so I can be rid of it and not have to think about it anymore and be with Rosette without worry?” Remington considered the possibilities of this and finally gave an answer.
“I believe the only way to get rid of it….is to do it. Once you have experienced it, you won’t be curious anymore. Then you can go with your life again.” Chrno looked through the confession window at Remington and asked a question that made his shake and sweat a little because he was so nervous.
“Will …you help me….get rid of it?” He immediately clasped his fingers over his mouth. Remington let out a little “hmp” through his mouth with a slight grin on his face. He opened his eyes and looked at Chrno.
“Of course I will help you. I can see this is truly troubling you and if you need help then I will be more than glad.” Remington thought of how to do this and finally told Chrno the only thing he could. “Meet me in my room tonight at 10:00 let no one see you, and I will help get rid of this burning desire. Also, you must be in your full form; otherwise, I won’t be able to because it wouldn’t feel right because of your current physical size. So I guess I will see you later” Remington got up and left the church. Chrno just sat in the confession booth wondering if he was making the right choice. He felt this was the only way, and if it was, then he would go through with it. Chrno left the church and went to his room to prepare for the nightly deed that would commence in a few hours.
