No Fear No Hate No Pain No Broken Hearts

Well in the morning
When our day begins
And it feels like cold, cold steel

Another bright, sunny morning dawned. Our day began with the birds chirping in the trees. The sky was impossibly blue with puffy white clouds and the air had a clean, washed smell to it. All around me, people smiled and greeted each other with warmth and happiness. I watched it all through jaded purple eyes and wondering when the next attack would come.

To me, the day was overly bright and false. The sun blinded the common man from seeing the brink of destruction the world was teetering on. The birds were stupid creatures with no idea of the danger building across the land. The blue sky and clean smell to the air were just a period of calm before a violent storm.

The day, to me, felt like cold, cold steel. Like the death-dealing satin smooth barrel of my gun. Like the deadly sharpness of Goyjo’s jakujou or the weighted ends of Goku’s Noi-bo. Demons were on the way to try and take us down. The brightness of the day was a lie to the coming darkness.

And when the sun comes up
It\'s like a new commotion
You say nobody told you
It would feel like this

A flash of light on weapons, bright like a newly born sun, came up over the rise to the village we had stayed in. It caused a new commotion in the people out for some early morning shopping. Bags of produce were dropped and mothers grabbed up their screaming children as they watched the horde of demons storm into the village and head straight for where my little party of world saviours stood. The old man who ran the inn we had stayed at watched the demons draw closer and clutched at the door frame in shock at the sight of so many demons.

Nobody told me it would feel like this to face this new army of demons that wanted us dead. I had expected to feel something. Excitement. Justice. Vengeance. Honour. Something; anything. I felt nothing but annoyance at the continued attacks.

No fear; no hate; no pain; no broken hearts

There was no fear. I knew that we would take out this army that out numbered us four to one with little problem. We were that good at killing the demons sent to destroy us.

There was no hate. I knew the demons weren’t doing this because they wanted to but because they had been brainwashed into it.

There was no pain. The demons couldn’t hurt me physically. None of them were good enough to get within touching range.

There were no broken hearts. I felt nothing for these tainted souls. They were mere tools. Something to try and slow us down before we could reach our goal in India. It was a waste in my opinion. Those trying to revive Guymao would have better spent this resource in waiting until we got to India and then unleashing a tsunami of demons to overwhelm us and take the Scripture.

You\'ve got the killing gun
Held in your hand
It feels like cold, cold steel

I’ve got the killing gun in my hand. The cold, cold steel feels like an intimate friend. I use it relentlessly on the demons that keep coming. They are either without fear or stupid. I figured stupid when they see their companions being cut down by me and my party and yet still charge us.

And when the sun comes up
It\'s like a new commotion

The sun passed through a cloud, highlighting me and my party in a pool of golden light. I can appreciate the sun breaking through and lighting us up at that moment as if we were chosen by the gods to defeat the encroaching evil.

Oh yeah…we had been.

Apparently, the demons attacking us realized it as well. A deadly silence descended as they stopped their attack and stared at us. My party and I stood ringed by demons and bathed in the glow of the pure morning sun. I was about to start a new commotion. A cold smile touched my lips as I calmly loaded my gun and snapped the barrel shut.

You say shoot, shoot, shoot it up
shoot it up

“I’ll kill you,” I said as I broke the silence with the sharp report of my gun.

I proceeded to do exactly what I said I would. After all, what good is a monk that doesn’t keep his word? Aim, shoot, repeat. Reload when necessary. In less time than it would take to drink a beer, the remaining demons had been banished from this plane of existence.

I lit a smoke and reloaded my gun again. I tucked it into my obi, walked to the jeep and climbed in. Hakkai slid behind the wheel and Goyjo and Goku piled into the back. As we drove away, I could hear snatches of the stunned villagers conversations.

No fear; no hate; no pain; no broken hearts

“Did you see that? They had no fear, even against so many demons.”

“There was nothing in their faces. They didn’t hate those demons for trying to kill them.”

“They had no fear of pain either. They knew the demons wouldn’t touch them.”

“They had no broken hearts about cutting down so many demons. Makes you wonder if they’re any better than the demons they killed.”

But we were better. We were alive and the demons weren’t. Whether we were better spiritually, that was something up to the gods to decide.
