Disclaimer: I don’t own Sorcerer Hunters. I do own Cherry and Celery Jam, the people of Dezato Town, the people of Nori Village and their sorcerer.
Notes: The end of the manga series never happened (ie, the wedding). Carrot and the others got a year off work after the battle with Zaha. And I always think of Carrot as being able to eat like Serena/Usagi from Sailor Moon. Oh, this is mostly based on the anime, as I\'ve only read the first two manga.
Feedback: GIMME!
Warnings: Yaoi (eventually), the Misu sisters.
Summary: Carrot Glace and the Sorcerer Hunters are contracted by the sorceress of a small town to find out and dispose of the culprit behind the recent rash of kidnappings. But what is the connection between her and Carrot, and why do the Dezato townspeople know him?

Prologue
*****
The blue-haired woman wiped tears from her eyes and sat at the writing desk, indicating for the manservant to wait. She pulled some parchment and a quill from a drawer, and uncapped a vial of indigo ink. With a shaky hand, she began to write.
Dear Saint Mama,
I write to you on behalf of the people of Dezato Town. Dezato has recently been hit with a rash of kidnappings, and I fear that my rival is behind them. I wish to hire the Sorcerer Hunters. Enclosed you shall find 20,000 gold crowns. Please, Saint Mama, help me and my people.
Yours Sincerely,
Cherry Jam, Sorceress
Cherry set the quill down and gently blew on the ink to dry it. She then folded the parchment and put it into an envelope. Picking up the quill and re-inking I, she addressed the envelope. She then poured some melted wax on the overlapping edges of the envelope, and pressed her signet ring into the liquid. The image of a spoon and knife crossed was left in the rapidly cooling wax.
Cherry then handed the envelope and a bag of money to the waiting manservant. He pulled open his chest and placed the letter and bag inside.
“Take this to the Stella Church. It is for the eyes of Saint Mama alone. Deliver it to her yourself,” she instructed the golem.
“Yes, my lady,” the golem replied.
“Go now, and hurry.” The golem left the room to fulfil his orders.
‘Be fast as the wind,’ Cherry thought, as she tidied away her writing equipment.

Part 1

The Sorcerer Hunters followed the serious-looking man as he led the way through the poorly-lit winding streets of the small town, heading towards the market square at the centre of town. Just to the north of the market was a large cream house. It had a dark blue roof, with light blue double-doors and window-shutters. Rising from the house was a tower, easily twice the height of the main house. It, too, was roofed and shuttered in blue. He lead the way up the front steps and knocked on the door.
“Guests to see the Lady Cherry,” he told the butler.
“Ah, do come in. The Lady is expecting you,” said the butler, ushering them into the small foyer. He hung their coats on a coat rack by the door, and set their belongings by the staircase. “Please, follow me.”
Just as their were about to enter the sitting room, a blue-haired woman, wearing a smudged apron over her trousers and shirt, came out one of the other doors in the hallway. There was an inverted triangle on her forehead. She clapped her hands together when she saw them.
“Oh, good! You’re just in time for dinner. Would you like to join me?”
“Hell ye-” Carrot stopped mid-yell, a worried look on his face, “Did you make it yourself?”
“Only one of the dishes. I am getting better you know,” said the sorceress. “He always thinks the worst of my cooking,” she confided to the others.
“We, uh, we’d love to join you, Lady Cherry,” said Marron, giving his brother a look that said ‘we *will* be talking about this later’. The rest of the group gave their assent.
“Would you like to join us, Burdock, Lemon?” she asked their guide and the butler.
“No, thank you, Lady. My wife will be waiting for me at home,” said their guide.
“I also must decline, my Lady,” said the butler.
“Tell Damson I said hello,” Cherry told Burdock. “And Lemon, you may have the rest of the night off. Go spend time with your young man.”
She laughed as her butler flushed bright red at the mention of his boyfriend, and bid the two men goodnight. She then ushered the Sorcerer Hunters into the dining room, where a full course meal waited on the large table. Six sets of plates and cutlery were set around one end of the table.
“Please, sit, and eat,” Cherry invited. She paused, a thought suddenly striking her. “Oh, dear. Please, forgive me. I’ve forgotten my manners. I am Cherry Jam, Sorceress and ruler of Dezato.” She curtsied. “It is an honour to meet the famed Sorcerer Hunters.”
They all hastily introduced themselves, then sat down as Cherry bade them to. Somehow Cherry managed to be seated to the left of Carrot, with Marron to his right. She felt it was the least she could do; to make sure he didn’t end up seated next to one of those disturbing women.
When the food on the table was eaten, Cherry stacked the plates on the sideboard, then brought out a tray with a large pie, a jug of cream, and a plate of delicate-looking dainties.
“Please, try the pie. I made it myself. I’d love your opinions on it,” Cherry said.
She was soon disappointed, when her guests portrayed their disgust at the taste. She covered up her dismay with a self-deprecating smile.
“It’s ironic, isn’t it?” she asked as she dealt out the dainties. “I rule over a town famous for it’s chefs and it’s cooking; yet anything I try to make turns out tasting like something died in it. It’s very discouraging.”
“It was better than usual,” Carrot offered, forgetting that his brother and friends were there.
“What do you mean by that, darling?!” asked Chocolate.
“Yes, Carrot, it seems like you know Lady Cherry,” added Tira.
“Just call me Cherry, please,” interrupted Cherry. “And of course we know each other. Carrot visited Dezato a few months after that nasty Zara Toot tried to destroy the world. Men. Really. Never happy unless they’re killing things, I swear.”
“It was Zaha Torte, Cherry,” Carrot corrected, sniggering. “When Big Mama gave us the year off after the battle with Zaha, I wandered around the country. I was here for a few weeks; there was a big cooking contest going on at the time and I was asked to be the judge, since the locals had seen how much I ate. That was my first encounter with Cherry’s cooking. I was sick for three days. She’d gotten the cinnamon in her cookies mixed up with the powdered form of a local herb that has a laxative quality.”
“I was completely mortified,” Cherry added, “and I hid away for the rest of the contest. My cooking always turns out wrong. I’m a bit of a ditz in the kitchen.”
“She’s a bit of a ditz all the time. The next time I met her she *fell* on me. She was trying to put a bird’s next back up a tree and the branch she was standing on broke. Every time we met afterwards involved an accident. She wrecked one of my favourite kimonos when she tripped into the river and dragged me in with her.”
“So, that’s what happened to your blue kimono!” Marron exclaimed. He watched Carrot and Cherry closely. ‘But there’s more to the story than you’re telling us, niisan,’ he thought. ‘And I’m determined to get to the bottom of this mystery.’
