Your Heart Will Lead You Home

Sunny days and starry nights
And lazy afternoons
You\'re counting castles in the clouds
And humming little tunes

Golden eyes surveyed the open sky. Even after all this time, the absence of walls was enough in itself to raise his spirits. He stretched luxuriously on the grassy hillside, enjoying the all-too-rare peace and quiet. Soon enough, their journey would have to continue. Hopefully not until after they\'d eaten.

But somehow right before your eyes
The sun light fades away
Everything is different
And everything has changed

The wind started picking up, and the formerly white, fluffy clouds began to pile into thick, shapeless masses. The young man shivered as light and color drained from the formerly inviting landscape. Suddenly feeling uneasy, he headed toward the clot of buildings that marked their stopping point.

If you feel lost and on your own
And far from home
You\'re never alone, you know

Just think of your friends, the ones who care
They all will be waiting there with love to share
And your heart will lead you home

Green eyes smiled politely at the shopkeeper. They had fallen into a routine: find a town, find an inn, find supplies. There were the periodic attacks to take care of, but those were so frequent now that a quiet day was almost unnerving. Payment made, he turned to leave, holding the door for the next customers – a couple so engrossed in each other that they didn’t notice the invisible transition from smile to mask.

Funny how a photograph
Can take you back in time
To places and embraces
That you thought you\'d left behind

The peace of the afternoon suddenly took on a sterile quality. The absence of conflict became the absence of contact, and became even more unnerving. He shifted the bag of supplies and made his way down the street. He was painfully aware of the sheer normalcy that would elude him and his companions until they had finished their journey. The inn slowly came into view.

They\'re trying to remind you
That you\'re not the only one
That no one is an island
When all is said and done

If you feel lost and on your own
And far from home
You\'re never alone, you know

Just think of your friends, the ones who care
They all will be waiting there, with love to share
And your heart will lead you home

Scarlet eyes surveyed the smoky recesses of the dimly-lit room. The slender figure swaggered over to the bar, flashing a grin and a wink at the barmaid. The barstool gave a weary creak as he settled in for what he hoped would be a relaxing session of booze, smoke, and (if his luck didn’t completely crap out on him) maybe a little “personal time” with one of the local ladies.

There\'ll come a day when you\'re losing your way
And you won\'t know where you belong

It wasn’t any one thing that tipped him off. It started with the half-sneer from the bartender, quickly followed by the obviously watered drinks. He could have coped with the dismissive reactions from every woman in the place if the beer hadn’t reminded him of sex in a canoe. But when the drink he requested was slid across the bar with enough force to tip over and thoroughly soak his brand-new pack of cigarettes, it was the final straw.

“That’s it! I’m going –”

They say that home is where your heart is
So follow your heart know that you can\'t go wrong

If you feel lost and on your own
And far from home
You\'re never alone, you know

Just think of your friends, the ones who care
They all will be waiting there, with love to share
And your heart will lead you home

From three different directions, three figures converged on a nondescript wooden building. A fourth waited in the doorway, impatiently tapping his foot. Gold eyes met violet, and color seemed to creep back into the edges of the surrounding town. Green eyes caught a glimpse of scarlet, and the sterile bubble was fragmented. A deliberately raucous call grated across the still of the late afternoon.

“Saaan-zoooo, we’re hooo-ooome!”

The sharp crack of a fan striking its target silenced the greeting, but it was a long time before the snickering stopped.

If you feel lost and on your own
And far from home
You\'re never alone, you know

Just think of your friends
The ones who care
They all will be waiting there
With love to share
And your heart will lead where you belong
I know your heart will lead you home
