Prelude

It was dark.
So very dark.
A wave of heat washed over him. He reached up into the endless dark, trying to find a release from his eternal suffering.
So hot.
So very dark.
When he thought he could take no more his eyes snapped open, gazing up at the dark ceiling. Luffy sat up in his hammock, running a hand through his sweaty hair.
Not again.
Waking up, covered in sweat, shaking from dizziness. This had been happening every night for the past week. Everything had been fine beforehand, but now….now he was worried.
And it wasn’t very often that Monkey D. Luffy was worried.
Staggering out of his hammoc, Luffy stumbled up to the deck. The Moon was still out, full in all it’s splendor. It’s rays washed over the deck and onto the pale face of the captain. The cool wind kissed his fevered skin, giving sweet relief to the brunette. He sighed, letting a look of worry cross his normally calm features. Without another sound or action, Luffy crawled up into the crow’s nest, letting himself sleep the rest of the night under the stars.
He hoped he didn’t wake up the way he did before.

Morning came too soon. Before he knew it, the smell of breakfast assaulted his nose. Cracking his back, Luffy sat up and looked down over the edge of the crow’s nest. Zoro and Robin were already seated at the breakfast table, while Chopper, Usopp, and Nami were no where to be seen. And Sanji, of course, was presumed to be in the kitchen.
He heaved a heavy sigh and started climbing down which caught Zoro’s attention.
“Oi.”
Luffy looked down at Zoro who was looking at him inquisitively.
“Were you up there all night?”
Robin peeked over her book to glance at the brunette captain before returning to her novel. Luffy put on a false face.
“Yeah. The cabin was too stuffy and I needed some fresh air.”
His feet finally touched the deck, but he did not notice the piercing gaze of the first mate. With a “hnnh” Zoro went back to staring at nothing.
Taking his chance, Luffy hopped down to the men’s cabin, spotting Usopp pulling on a shirt.
“Heyf,” he mumbled through the fabric, “you weren’t here when I woke up.”
“Couldn’t sleep last night. Decided to sleep outside. Too stuffy ya know?” Luffy rushed his answer.
With a raised eyebrow, and a shrug, Usopp decided to drop it. Although he knew Luffy was trying to hide something, he decided not to press it. Luffy would talk when he was ready. His thoughts were soon interrupted as Sanji announced that the morning meal was indeed finished and ready for consumption. Usopp wanted to talk more with Luffy, but soon realized that he had run off. Shrugging, he followed suit, and went up to breakfast.
