Luffy looked up from his spot on the floor.

“Can’t I just look for just a moment?”

Crouching on the floor of a store, Luffy examined the gorgeous instrument. An hand-carved mahogany Piano. He leisurely plunked a few keys of the ivory in amusement.

Luffy rolled his eyes. He stared out the store’s window watching the large crowds of people pass by. Nothing exciting had been happening for the past few days and the crew had recently arrived at port. Since then all had been quiet. While exploring the town Luffy’s eyes had caught the beautiful piano in the window.

“You don’t get it Zoro. It’s not just a piano. It’s an instrument you use to create something. One of the greatest pleasures in life is to create something with your own two hands.”

Zoro raised his eyebrows. He didn’t know where Luffy had generated this thought. He had never heard the young captain speak like this before. He quickly gained his composure once more.

“But you don’t even play piano.”

“I know a little.”

“Oh?” This surprised Zoro greatly. Luffy? Play piano? He didn’t think it possible.

“I was taught when I was younger. I never got a chance to keep up cause I was too poor to have a piano of my own so I always used to practice at the bar. It helped keep my mind off things after Shanks and Ace left.”

Zoro’s face softened. He softly padded over to where the captain was and kneeled down next to him.

“Do you remember how to play?”

Luffy glanced over grinning.

“Are you asking me to play something for you?”

Zoro simply scoffed.

“Only if you want.”

Luffy chuckled. He stood up from his spot and pulled out the piano bench, gently sitting him bum down on the polished wood. He calmly cracked his knuckled which made Zoro flinch slightly.

“You’ll get arthritis if you keep that up.”

Luffy twiddled his fingers slightly, contemplating over what he should play. He furrowed his brow until the store’s bell rang.

Luffy turned round to see the rest of the Going Merry nakama standing in the doorway. They seemed utterly confused at the fact that their captain was sitting at a piano. Chopper padded up to his captain and stared at the piano. Luffy’s eyes brightened.

“How’d you know we were in here?”

“We saw you in the window,” Sanji deadpanned.

“Hey, get away from that!” Nami shouted at Luffy, “You’ll break it!”

“Actually,” Zoro cut in, “He was just going to play something for me.”

“Luffy? Play piano? I’d think I’d rather see it to believe first,” Usopp criticized, crossing his arms defensively.

“I can too play piano! …..I just haven’t played in a couple years..” Luffy shot back with a pout.

Chopper jumped up on the piano bench next to Luffy. He looked up at his captain expectantly.

“I want to hear something!”

“Yes, I think a song would be quite enjoyable,” Robin chimed in.

Nami and Sanji looked at the others skeptically.

“Better cover your ears.”

“Nami! Be nice!” Chopper shouted at her.

Luffy pouted in annoyance. He felt slightly insulted but didn’t really let it bother him. He then grinned proudly at the money-grabbing navigator.

“Lemme think of something to play first! Then I’ll show you!”

Nami scoffed. For once, Luffy growled at the red-head, almost losing his patience. He felt the insult raise in him. He had never let her insults get to him before, but they’d seem to really get to him now.

“Why don’t you believe that I can do this?”

“Because you’re Luffy!” Nami shouted, “You’re clumsy, loud, overly-optimistic and impatient. You don’t have the grace, style or ability to be a musician!”

All heads snapped towards Zoro, fuming in his spot. His eyes were filled with anger, as if he had been the one insulted.

“Zoro…” Luffy stared at the green haired first-mate.

Regaining his composer once again, he stepped over towards the brunette. Firmly, he placed a hand on Luffy’s shoulder.

“Let’s hear you play.”

Luffy’s eyes shone with joy as those words left his mouth. He beamed appreciably at the green haired first-mate. When Zoro caught his eyes he turned away quickly, blushing slightly.

“Yes! I want to hear something too!” Chopper added in excitedly.

Luffy couldn’t help but laugh at the elk’s outburst.

“Ok. I’ll play one of the first pieces I learned. I can’t remember the full name of the guy who wrote it, but his last name is Ravel.”

Sanji raised a blonde eyebrow.

“I’ve heard that name before.”

“Really, Sanji?”

Zoro cleared his throat loudly, shutting everyone up. After a few moments of silence, Zoro finally spoke again.

“Let’s hear it.”

Luffy nodded and set his fingers upon the keys. He closed his eyes for a moment, closing the rest of the world off. Inhaling deeply, he pressed his fingers down into the ivory, starting his piece. It was slow, but melodious. The soft sad song danced across the sunlight that fell through the windows, piercing into every heart that heard it’s quiet lament. The world seemed to slow to it’s pace as the song sang out to everything around it.

Luffy kept his eyes closed as he concentrated, letting himself become one with the music. He never faltered, never missed a beat and the song fell from him like dulcet river flowing by. As the music started to crescendo his brow furrowed as his fingers continued to dance across the flawless ivory keys. The lament seemed to reach it’s climax as it soon furrowed away into a soft sigh, ending like an evening shadow fading into the night.

He was still. Never moving from his spot until the music died away like a visit come and gone.

Zoro stood there, dumbfounded. How had Luffy done that? Create something so beautiful, yet so sad? He was amazed at how it tore at it heart and how it left him with an intense feeling that he couldn’t describe.

Luffy finally looked up to his crew with expectancy.

“That was Pavane for a Dead Princess.”

“Sanji?”

All eyes were on the blonde chef in amazement. Their eyes all urged him to continue on.

“Ravel wrote that song for a princess that had just died and it was played at her funeral. He wrote that song when he was only 27 years old.”

Sanji stared at Luffy. He didn’t seem to believe he had just heard that Luffy had played the so-called “Pavane for a Dead Princess”.

“How do you know how to play that?”

Luffy stared back at him innocently.

“It was the first song I ever learned.”

“That’s impossible!” Sanji retorted, “ You’d have to be some kind of musical genius to be able to have ‘Pavane for a Dead Princess’ to be the first piece you learned!”

“That’s what Erik said.”

Zoro raised an eyebrow confusedly.

“Erik? Who’s Erik?”

“Oh! Erik was my piano teacher. He wrote beautiful songs and always said I would be a great musician. I believe his full name was Erik Butler.”

“ERIK BUTLER?!” Robin cried out.

“Do you know him?” Usopp asked.

“Erik Butler is the world’s greatest composer of operas! He was your teacher?!”

Luffy nodded, not understanding what the big deal was.

“He taught me the Pavane by Faure’, Aquarium by San-Saen, and also Erik wrote a song about me in one of his operas. I believe the opera was called Don Juan Triumphant.”

“Don Juan Triumphant…..I saw that a long time ago…..Which song was it?” Robin asked.

“It was the lullaby.”

“Lullaby?”

“Here, let me play it for you.”

Luffy’s fingers once again danced across the keys as he voiced accompanied his fingers, singing out a soft sad lullaby that seemed to pull the heart-strings.

Nami cleared her throat, regaining everyone’s stature. She flipped her hair back, letting the wind toy with it. Her eyes shone brightly at Luffy.

“Luffy, since the day before we all have been talking and we decided to pitch in and get you something.”

The straw-hat captain was dumbfounded. They had got something for him? They had actually gotten something for him? This was a first!

“You…got me something? What?”

They parted like a wave to reveal a gigantic box wrapped in white with a giant red ribbon. Luffy timidly walked up to the box, not knowing what to expect. Zoro urged him on with a smile. Robin held up the end of the ribbon and put it in Luffy’s hand.

“Go on. Pull.”

Looking around, the crew nodded, telling him to do it. With the snap of his arm, Luffy pulled back on the giant red ribbon and the box fell open to reveal the secret from inside. His eyes widened as the box fell away. He laid his eyes upon glorious black liqueur that shone like black gold. The smooth ebony called out to him as he reached out and slid a hand across the surface.

“Minna….”

“How do you like it?”

Luffy ran his hand once more over the amazingly glorious mini grand piano. He fell to his knees in front of the piano, losing his balance.

“Luffy?! Are you alright?!”

“Gomen! I’m sorry..I’m just….I…I’ve never gotten anything like this before….”

He looked up at them with tears in his eyes.

“Thank you….thank you so much…everybody…”

They all smiled at him.

“Luffy….play something for us?” Robin asked politely.

Shocked, Luffy looked up and stared at Zoro. His smile shone with pride for his young lover.

“Go on. Show us your glorious hidden talents.”

Luffy smiled. He stood up and pulled the piano bench out from under the piano and sat down. He broke out into a grin as he looked up.

“Any requests?”
