Zelgadiss walked along one of the many long corridors in the lower levels of Rinn castle. Dressed elegantly, if a little scantily, in an ankle length white silk loincloth with blue embroidered stripes at the hem and decked out with an assortment of simple flowing silver jewelry. He looked strangely out of place against the gray of the stones and the blackness of the shadows around him. His fine goatskin sandals shushed against the floor softly as his walked… aimlessly wandering where he knew he wouldn’t be bothered. Torches in this far corner of the castle were few and far between, set a little too high in the wall scones for good visibility. Faint light danced across his metallic lavender hair and his blue skin, unmarred by any blemishes except for the scattered plates of green rock that covered his skin. They were everywhere, creating a sort of armor of stone that was permanently embedded into his skin. They had been the pain of his existence not that very long ago, and he had hid from the world’s eyes, ashamed of what he was. With his delicately pointing ears, his tiny fangs, his strange skin, wire-like hair, and morose appearance… he had thought himself irreparably ugly. Xellos had apparently not thought so. He had lived here for a good two years now, and had come close to accepting his place in the order of things. It was always somewhat of a shock, however, to be referred to as Lord Xellos’s consort. Consort! Really, how degrading sometimes. He thought to himself, trailing his idle fingers on the tapestry beside him. His blue hand passing across majestic dragons and scenes of sorcerers and mighty swordsmen fighting battles single handed against hoards of monsters or armies on horseback. None of which entertained or interested him in the slightest at that moment. He was far to busy thinking on other things. He had stopped looking for the Claire Bible and a cure the year before, figuring that the way he looked now, with his elven chymeric features, was the way he would stay no matter how hard he wished to be human again.
“Besides…. Having this body does give me certain advantages.” He spoke aloud, his thoughts echoing harmlessly off the empty vaulted ceilings. He came down here to think for that very reason… no one else ever did.
It was true that Xellos could overpower him with pulse quickening ease, Zelgadiss had taken that for granted at first, led astray by the Lord’s deceivingly human characteristics. Not even close. Xellos was more of a demonic mutt than he was, well… actually less. Zelgadiss had been pieced together with Demon, Human, Elf, and Golem parts… while Xellos was purely demon. It made him shiver to remember those eyes, normally shrouded behind a cheerful mask, thin catlike pupils and glowing powerfully in a deep royal purple that somehow had a sheen of gold about them. There was no way such eyes could be gentle in any way, but the mouth that formed such pleasant compliments counteracted the harsh gaze, and Zelgadiss found that it only served to arouse him all the more. He didn’t consider himself a masochist… he didn’t love pain… But all the same he found himself short of breath whenever Xellos looked at him in such a way that his dangerous eyes glinted with demonly venom. Just for an instant… Perhaps it was fear that made his pulse race and his limbs feel heavy, but he didn’t think so.
“No… I don’t think its fear.” He spoke again, smiling a little as he did.
“What isn’t fear…?” A sound, a voice barely heard. He wasn’t alone anymore.
“Excuse me?” He asked the shadows. When the bodiless voice answered, he thought it came from above, and faint recognition sparked in his mind, flaring into realization.
“What don’t you think is fear?” The question was repeated. Zelgadiss leaned up against the wall beside him, realizing then that in his deep train of thought, he had neglected to notice that he had wandered out of his secluded hall and into a more populated area, actually, the greater hall that Xellos often inhabited the rafters of. He recognized the voice.
“Nothing, Xellos, just thinking out loud.” He smiled, his face downcast. A rush of air brushed against his face and when he looked up, a familiar cat eyed gaze met his own.
“You’re always thinking too much, Zel… I think it’s hard on you.” Xellos flipped over in mid air so that he was floating on his back right at eye level to Zelgadiss, and let out a great heaving sigh and stretched. He must have been watching Zelgadiss for quite a while, and noticed his subdued mood.
“It’s all right, I was just thinking of my old friends earlier and it got me started in that frame of mind. You know, Lina and Gourry and the rest.” Zel murmured. Xellos nodded.
“I figured with the way you were moping about. I swear… Just think of the more annoying factor of the ‘good old times’. Remember Amelia? Don’t miss HER do you?” A chuckle escaped the Chimera.
“No… I don’t really miss Amelia. She was such an idiot most of the time. Got us into so much trouble I always wished I could just send her off on a fake crusade and never hear from her again… but she was just a child. And I never did get along with children very well.”
“I don’t know… She seemed to like you just fine.” Xellos’s eyes narrowed as he thought of what HE would have liked to do to the little Sayrhune princess. He kept it to himself, however, for he had learned a while ago that Zelgadiss rarely appreciated his demonic sense of fun. Nevermind. He consoled himself. On to a better topic. And he spoke up again before Zelgadiss had a chance to respond to his comment about Amelia.
“Come Zelgadiss, let’s retire early today…
