Evangelion Ressurection: Hell on Earth
Title: Evangelion Ressurection; Hell on Earth
Summary: Chapter one of a multi-chapter fic. Focuses on Shinji\'s return to Tokyo-3 after an incident in his past that he chose to run away from. Shinji has been gone for between two and three years after graduation of high school putting him at 20 years old. This is slight AU, the movies never take place in this universe otherwise everything is the same as the series.
Rating: Currently R, in the future there may be some NC-17 related scenes
Pairing(s): Shinji/Asuka, Misato/OC, Kensuke/Rei, Toji/Hikari
Author’s notes: This is my first fanfic I\'ve ever written, I guess I could have gone for an easier series, but this one rocks. Please feel free to review, or even send in suggestions you might like to see in future chapters (I will credit people in the notes at the beginning if I take a suggestion). Slight note for future fics, Evangelion unit 05 was shipped to Japan slightly before Kaworu becomes the 5th child.
Disclaimer: Neon Genesis Evangelion is not my own creation. I make no money from this attempt to continue a series that I thought ended on a low note. Should the owner, GAINAX ever ask me to remove this, I will comply.
Chapter 1
-You musn\'t run away, you must confront yourself.- The words echoed in the mind of the twenty year old Shinji Ikari as he stared at the semi-deserted skyline of the city of Tokyo-3. It was in that exact spot six years ago that he first looked at the city with Misato. Just the passing thought of Misato brought the memory of the drunken woman to the front, though it did bring a smile to his face.
Misato Katsuragi, the person that was almost like an older sister and mother in one. There was a time two years prior that he\'d spent living with Misato, a place that when he wasn\'t piloting the Eva, was actually the first place he could call a home. Two years ago he had left, ignoring the words that Misato had told him the first time he\'d ever been allowed to see an Eva. Now those words had managed to finally make their meaning clear some time ago, while he\'d been on his self-imposed sojourn to find himself.
For two years he had lived on the road, drifting from place to place in search of himself. During those two years he had found that his entire life had been a lie. All his life he\'d lived in self-depreciation, always afraid of what others might think of him, constantly trying to be worthy of their praise and their adulation. Slowly he stood straight from the leaning position he\'d been in on the guard rail, and shouldered his duffle bag as he headed on the road that lead down into the city, back to the life he left behind as a boy and returned to now as a man.
He pulled the cellular phone he\'d been given several years ago and engaged the internet connection of the phone. Already his thumb was tapping away at the number pad, constructing an email as he walked, finally looking at what he had written before shipping off the message. The only person he had kept some semblance of contact with these past few years would receive it within moments and probably send a reply shortly. Earlier that month he had received word of a new threat, a newer more dire threat than the Angels, if that was possible.
Before he had even arrived in the lights of the city the reply had been set, and he frowned before turning down a familiar street leading to a high rise apartment complex. The reply he had received was what he had been afraid to see, and forced him to bring the phone to his ear and give a call to the number stored into the phone. And was picked up after three rings, and a female voice picked up.
\"Hello?\"
\"Doctor Akagi, it\'s Shinji.\"
\"What?! I\'m shocked that you would call instead of corresponding by email as you\'ve done.\"
\"I\'m sorry, but something doesn\'t add up. You told me just two weeks ago that the Angels, or something worse, had returned. Now tell me, what exactly is going on?\"
\"Shinji, I\'m not really at liberty to discuss this on the phone, but I\'ll try and give you as best of an explination as I can. During the angel incidents several years ago, we found the Dead Sea Scrolls that told of the coming of the angels. SEELE tried to use those as guidelines to try instigating their Human Instrumentality Project, the goal of which I don\'t know, but we\'ve found something new that the Magi confirmed just two months ago... There really IS a hidden code written in the Bible, one that once dechipered tells of the destruction of the angels only being the beginning.\"
\"You lost me after the bit about the Human Instrumentality Project, but let\'s say I understand the the angels were only the beginning. You mean to tell me that there\'s something more dangerous than the angels?\"
\"I believe so. What exactly is more dangerous than angels, other than the Evas, I don\'t know. Yet we think it may have something to do with the direct servants of \"God\" if there is such a being, or thing beyond the concept the world acknowledges.\"
\"...\" Shinji didn\'t reply, he instead kept silent as he digested the words that Ritsuko had just told him, if indeed there was some higher form of angel out there, then things could indeed get dangerous.
\"Shinji? I need to know when you\'re coming in for a synchro test, I need to deter...\"
\"Who said anything about piloting Eva again? Listen Ritsuko, that\'s not why I came back here. I came back because I think that maybe, just maybe, I made a mistake leaving in the first place. I\'m just hoping to set things right, then I probably will be on my way again.\"
\"Not pilot the Eva? You were the one that told me to keep it ready, almost like you knew someth... wait a minute Shinji... You came back, you mean you\'re in Tokyo three right now? Do you plan on seeing Misato again while you\'re here, because if you don\'t and she finds out you were here and didn\'t see her she won\'t forgive you.\"
\"Of course I plan on seeing her, matter of fact I\'m standing outside her door right now, and have been for a couple minutes. Goodbye Doctor Akagi, this will probably be the last time I talk to you. I don\'t plan on contacting you again, even by email.\"
Without so much as listening to her protests Shinji hit the button on the phone ending the call and turned off the phone. He stared at the name plate on the doorway, the kanji still depicted it as belonging to Katsuragi. One finger extended he moved to push the button, but pulled up just short as he shook his head.
-I just left... I can\'t expect Misato to welcome me back with open arms, but I can hope she\'ll at least understand why I\'m back.-
After mustering his nerve Shinji pushed the button, and a buzzing noise chimed through the apartment on the other side of the doorway. Seconds passed by, perhaps she wasn\'t home, but that was shattered by a stumbling on the other side of the door before it slid open. Shinji stared inside the apartment, no one was at the doorway and he arched an eyebrow until he noticed a rather funny sensation on his leg.
\"PenPen what the fu...\" Shinji lifted his leg and the penguin was still attached to the leg, hugging it close almost like it was afraid to let go of a long lost lover. After a moment Shinji realized exactly what PenPen was doing and began to shake his leg, \"Get off get off.. dirty penguin get off!\"
At the moment he was having the problems with the penguin a voice issued from the apartment, \"PenPen, who is it?\" After the words reached the hallway a woman rounded the corner to see a penguin in the act of humping the leg of a man standing there looking at it rather curiously and trying to dislodge it. That voice, she knew that voice and an audible gasp escaped her lips as she managed to reach the door.
Shinji managed to dislodge the penguin from the blue jeans he was wearing, and stared at PenPen wondering what the penguin was thinking in \"attacking\" him like that. When he looked up, all he saw was the fist before it connected with his jaw causing him to stagger back a little bit and land in a heap leaning against the railing outside with one arm thrown over it.
\"Shinji... how the hell could you make me worry like that?! Two years and not a word from you, two years and all you did was left a note, not even sent me an email or a letter, not even so much as a fucking phone call!\"
Taking the moment that she was yelling at him to rub his jaw Shinji stared at her with a bit of a bemused look on his face before he managed to straighten himself out. A little dribble of blood dropped onto the white shirt he wore beneath the sport coat and he managed to actually smile at the fact that she hit him, it showed that she still cared about him.
\"I\'m sorry Misato.. I should have kept up with you, I know. Would you at least give me time to explain myself? Over a cup of tea and a beer for you maybe?\"
Already Misato was moving over to help Shinji to his feet. As much as she loved that boy to death like a little brother or a son, she felt he deserved more than just the punch she\'d delivered, a punch that had built up for two years while she worried about whether he was alright. All her fears for him, her anger at how he could up and leave, and the problems that had arrisen recently all came out in that violent expression.
\"Of course Shinji. You\'re welcome to stay here if you\'d like to, I left your room the way you left it. Sorry about the punch, but... but..\" a frustrated scream came from her mouth before she continued, \"YOU made me worry myself almost to death.\"
\"Yeah, I deserved that.\" Shinji actually laughed, he had expected to end up on the floor after this first confrontation, but not five stories above ground. He figured she was libel to kill him after just leaving those few years ago.
Taking a moment to heft his duffle bag onto his shoulder again he walked into the apartment, expecting the place to have been classified a national disaster area. Shock nearly set in when he found out that the place was actually the opposite, it was quite clean. No wayward beer cans, no undergarments hanging by the lights in the bathroom, not even so much as an old instant ramen cup sitting on the living room table. The instant he walked into the kitchen his nose crinkled, one thing hadn\'t changed she was still cooking instant food (he\'d begun to wonder about that because there was no refuse about them), and suddenly his appetite fled at the thought of Misato\'s cooking.
\"Okay, tell me.. What have you done with the real Misato? This place is... clean. Not to mention there\'s few if any alcohol fumes, I just walked in and I\'m not buzzing.\"
\"Shut up Shinji. Alright tea will be done shortly, so spill it... why did you leave? Why haven\'t you made contact in all the time you\'ve been away, and why have you come back?\"
\"One question at a time please, I\'ll do my best to answer. It all started....\"
