The moonlight crept through the boughs of the trees, falling silently to illuminate the forest floor below. A dark figure weaved between the tall tree trunks. The figure was shrouded and moved with sneaky, stealthy steps. Casting a few glances to the sides and behind, the being slipped through the foliage and emerged into a clearing.
The clearing was already occupied by a number of other creatures. Like the newcomer, they had made their ways here secretly, careful to avoid prying eyes. Each of them was often watched, kept under the probing watch of their opponents. Rarely did they have the opportunity to meet like this.
The figure cast off his cloak, leaving it at the base of a tree and revealing his features. Dark hair cascaded from the man’s head, absorbing all light. Keen eyes surveyed the clearing, silently counting and identifying those present.
A second figure approached the newly-revealed guest and spoke. “Naraku! It’s good to see you here. It’s been so long!”
Naraku smiled and nodded to his long-time friend. “Thank you, Voldemort. It’s difficult to get away while the protagonists are watching me.”
“Now, now. I’ve told you, call me Tom. And I understand completely. My own protagonists were trying to keep me penned up as well. Luckily I slipped away. I’ve missed the group lately.”
Before Naraku could respond, the lead character cleared his throat and made an announcement. “Could we all please settle down? Let’s get the business out oft he way and then we can socialize,” the raspy, aged voice said. All those present took a seat on the forest floor in a semicircle around this form.
“Now, let’s hear the reports.”
The first person in the semicircle stood and addresses his companions. His voice echoed out from behind the silver facemask he always wore.
“I bring my own report, as well as Megatron’s. He is unable to attend because of Autobot surveillance, but he sends his regards. He and Starscream are doing well, and have raised 45 thousand dollars for a local food bank. For our own report, I am proud to say that the Cobra Winter Coat Drive has been a complete success, and we have dropped 75 thousand winter coats in place of bombs this winter so far.” A polite round of applause echoed through the clearing.
As Cobra Commander sat down the figure to his right stood to report. “As representative for the Guild of Assumed Dead Villains I wish to report that our bake sale went off with only a few minor problems,” the smooth, seductive voice of Karasu said. “The only major glitch was when Frieza’s tail showed through his disguise, but we covered it up quickly and passed it off as a fanboy costume. Sensui is so convincing when he wants to be. We raised quite a lot of money for the local animal shelter.”
“Excuse me?” interjected a voice from the other end of the half circle. “Could you please explain what the Guild of Assumed Dead Villains is?”
“Of course. We are villainous characters from any genre that appeared to have been killed. We are quite alive, but none of our protagonists realize this. It allows us a certain degree of freedom to perform our charitable duties. Occasionally we are seen, and usually those who see us write stories about us and post them online. But mercifully, the stories are usually so horrid that the rest of the fandom flames the idea of bringing us back to life so pointlessly. We have been truly blessed in that regard, and use it to our full advantage,” Karasu explained.
“Oh, thank you,” the other replied.
The next villain to report was Mumm-Ra. “I am pleased to report that I have joined forces with several various villains from Yu-Gi-Oh, and we are planning a mid-winter frolic later this season. It will, of course, have an Egyptian theme, and all proceeds will benefit the survivors of natural disasters throughout the world. I would be very pleased if you all would attend.” The surrounding crowded nodded and murmured their approval.
Finally the leader spoke once more. “I am glad to see we have been doing so well. For my own report, I am pleased to announce that I have been elected Pope.” The villain removed his cowl to reveal the face of Darth Sidious/Emperor Palpatine. “A few astute people have made the connection, and there have been some pictures posted online correlating my identities, but these have been blown off as a joke. In this position I will be able to help millions of lost souls around the world to see the light and help their fellow man. For this I am truly thankful.
“Now, before we adjourn our meeting, I would like to take a moment to give thanks to the being that made it possible for us to serve others. This woman is so beautiful, so wonderful, so kind, and so strong, that one look at her and we were all able to repent for our crimes and lead exemplary lives of service and humble kindness with no effort whatsoever. Three cheers for our inspiration, without whose love we would all still be disturbed and evil. This is for you, Mary Sue!”
The small group cheered loudly, “Hip Hip Hooray! Hip Hip Hooray! Hip Hip...”
“AHHHHHHH!” A shrill scream tore through the quiet darkness of the small apartment. In her bed, the author sat upright, sheen of cold sweat glistening on her skin. Taking a few deep breaths, she tried to calm herself and reassure herself that it was just a dream. Hurriedly she grabbed some of her manga books from the shelf and paged through them.
With a relieved sigh she put the final book back into its place. They were all there, unchanged. The villains still had their evil personalities, bad dispositions, psychological baggage, and most importantly, their depth. Shaking her head, the author climbed into bed once more.
“That is the LAST time I read fanfiction so close to bedtime,” she murmured as sleep claimed her again.
