” Hijikata-san!” A birdlike voice called as cheerful as ever. Its tone ringed in the air, filling ears with anticipation, with a need to hear more. It was more like water and the sun, making a perfect landscape together. For Hijikata Souji was everything. He turned his head to look who was behind the door and saw a slim figure in a slight bowing posture. Without Hijikata’s answer Souji stepped inside, smiling and having a tea on his hands. In a midday light Hijikata could see a steam rising from the cups and soon he smelled a familiar scent of green tea. He turned his head of from the younger male, trying to look like he wasn’t interested in having a company.
“ I brought you a tea, you have been sitting here the all day long writing your poems,” Souji said in a singsong voice, kneeling beside Hijikata, putting down his tray. Immediately green tea’s scent was replaced with Souji’s fresh fragrance. Souji smelled like flowers and a dojo. His clothes were always pure and white, his hair smelling like a young person.
“ What do you want, brat?” Hijikata asked in annoyed tone, gritting his teeth. Still he took the cup of a tea, lifted it to his lips and drank. It was a bit bitter, leaving a harsh flavour in his tongue. He liked to imagine how Souji looked at his face when he was drinking, waiting for a praise or two. Hijikata sighed, put down the cup and stood up.
“ You really can’t make a nice cup of tea,” he said, walking to the door that Souji had left open. He heard how Souji chuckled and sifted for a better sitting posture.
“ I know Hijikata-san, I know. You always remind me of it, but still you drink everything I give to you. Think about a situation where I would put a poison to your tea. I could kill you easily,” Souji said, not turning to look at Hijikata. And yet Hijikata knew Souji was smiling slightly when saying so. Hijikata turned to look at Souji who was sitting on his tatami, keeping the teacup on his small hands, sometimes sipping a little bit. His long dark hair fell down his back to his legs which were crossed under his bottom.
“ And why would you put a poison to my tea, Souji?” Hijikata had to ask, keeping his eyes on the boy. He liked to look at that slim figure in front of him, gazing Souji’s neck and shoulders. Souji turned to look over his shoulder, smiling brightly.
“ Because I like you, Hijikata-san,” Souji said and closed his eyes when smiling. Hijikata took few steps, kneeling behind Souji. He wrapped his arms around the boy, snuggling his neck with his nose. Souji stiffed but relaxed against his chest, keeping his eyes closed.
“ You are like a big kid, Hijikata-san,” Souji said calmly, touching Hijikata’s arms with his fingers. Hijikata didn’t answer, just breathed slowly in and out Souji’s scent. Moments like these were the best and worst. He always remembered how he loved Souji and how he could lose him in a blink of an eye. He took his arms around Souji, grapping collar of Souji’s yukata and slightly started to undress the man in front of him. He slowly slid the yukata downwards, revealing the light skin of Souji. He caressed Souji’s back with his fingers, pulling down the piece of garment. Souji sat peacefully in front of him, letting Hijikata undress him.
“ Your back is beautiful,” Hijikata whispered, looking up and down Souji’s backside. It was well toned a bit of muscular and slim. Souji smiled, relaxing into Hijikata’s touch.
“ It’s your beauty you are looking at,” Souji answered and felt how Hijikata stiffed behind him. The older man was quiet and suddenly grapped Souji’s shoulders and pulled him down to the floor. Souji laid on the floor only lower body covered with yukata, Hijikata’s arms on his shoulders. Hijikata was sitting on his side, looking down on Souji’s eyes. Hijikata was breathing heavily, looking how Souji’s dark hair spread over the floor.
“ I don’t want to lose you, Souji,” Hijikata said and put his head on Souji’s chest. He heard the heart of Souji, beating calmly and strongly. At these moments Souji was immortal. It seemed dreamlike – Souji’s sickness. Hijikata felt arms closing around him and sighed.
“ You really are like a big kid, Hijikata-san and that’s why I like you so much,” Souji said and smiled against Hijikata’s head. His sickness was unforgiving and reminded him often, but only sometimes he got desperate. This world could give him so much, but now it only took everything away. Hijikata’s heavy head told him that it was not time to think about future.
“ Be with me,” Souji whispered into Hijikata’s ears and let Hijikata gather him into the older man’s arms.
