Chapter 1 - Celebration
When the Princess' Crescent Beam attack hit me, I did not die, though I'm sure she and everyone else who were present thought I had. I simply became very drained of energy and entered a dormant state. It was much like being asleep, and like sleep, there were dreams.
Perhaps they were memories, or perhaps they were a medley of dreams and memories. There is no way to know for sure, but they would explain what I suddenly felt when I recognized Tuxedo Mask as Master Endymion.
My Master. That part I know to be true. He is Endymion and he was my Master in the past life. We, the Shitennou, served him and protected him. I had devoted my entire life to that mission, and that mission alone, or so I had thought.
I had lived at the Earth Palace for as long as I could remember. There had been a time before I lived there, but it was lost to me. I had no family outside of the Shitennou, though family is not the right word here. We lived our lives for the same purpose, serving our Master, nothing more.
Things had been relatively peaceful on Earth as we,Master Endymion and the Shitennou, grew up. At the time, it didn't really seem like our Master needed protection. There were very few people on Earth who disliked the royal family. They had always provided for their people well.
When our Master reached the age of sixteen, there was, of course, a large ball. Many people from all across the kingdom were invited, and some from outside the kingdom as well. This made some of the Earth people feel uncomfortable, but it could not be helped. It was customary for the Royal Family from the Silver Millennium to join in the festivities.
Queen Serenity was a fair woman who always seemed at peace. It was almost difficult to believe that someone could dislike her, but dislike they did, for she was of the Moon Kingdom.
The people of the Silver Millennium were envied by many of those who lived on Earth. They had extended lifespans, much longer than our own. Many thought that it was unfair that they should be given such long lives, while we would wither and die in a blink of an eye. Many others believed that it was the power of the Ginzuishou that gave them this long life, and wanted it to be shared with Earth. As this had never happened, the Silver Millennium was highly resented.
Also attending the ball was the Queen's only daughter, also named Serenity. She was a young child of twelve at the time and was accompanied by her own young guardians, the Sailor Senshi: four young girls, all of Serenity's age. They all possessed powers granted to them by the Ginzuishou, which they could call forth to protect their Princess at a moment's notice. They were not dressed as guardians now, however. They had all dressed for the occasion, in a variety of colourful ball gowns.
I, along with my fellow Shitennou, stood by the main doors to the ballroom, waiting for the arrival of our Master. I stood on the right side of the door with the leader of the Shitennou, Kunzite. He was the oldest of us and the most skilled fighter. He was also considered by many to be the most loyal to Endymion.
On the other side of the door stood Nephrite and Jadeite. Nephrite was three years older than Master Endymion and a year older than me. He seemed to feel that being the second oldest Shitennou, he should be the second Shitennou in rank, and he easily could be. His quick temper often blinded him in battle, however, and I was usually easily able to defeat him in our mock duels.
Jadeite was the youngest of us, and was even younger than Master Endymion by almost three years. Despite his youth, he had quite an ability with magic, which I was working with him to improve. His skill with the sword was quite poor, though Kunzite did try his best to help the boy. For now, Jadeite would be armed with twin daggers, which he had a bit more success with, due to their light weight.
We were given the signal from one of the palace servants and Kunzite and Nephrite opened the ballroom doors, revealing our young Master. He was greeted by a round of applause as he entered the room and made his way down the middle of the room to his seat of honour on the other side of the ballroom. We followed behind him.
Master Endymion wore a new uniform, made especially for him and his coming of age celebration. It was cream coloured and decorated with golden embroidery. He wore a matching cream coloured cape which was lined in a pale blue. A sword hung sheathed at his left side, though we knew he would discard it shortly after the celebration got under way.
“Thank you all for coming!”our Master said, once he had reached his seat. “I'm not one to make speeches, so let the festivities begin!” At this command, Master was seated and the hired band began to play. We continued to stand, Kunzite and Nephrite beside and slightly behind our Master, Jadeite and I on the outside.
My glaze travelled over to the grand piano which had been set up in the room earlier that day. Master wished that I play a few songs during the ball, and I had reluctantly agreed to this. I saw no reason to go against my Master's wishes, but I did prefer to play in private. Playing and composing for the piano was one of the few pleasures I allowed myself, though even my playing served my Master in a sense. It allowed me to clear my thoughts and brought calm. In this state, I could think things through clearly and figure out how to best serve my Master in a given situation. This calm also allowed me to better focus my magical abilities.
I turned my attention back to the celebration. The Royal Family of the Silver Millennium was seated not too far to our right. The Queen and Princess being given special guest seats and the Senshi were each seated as well, two on either side of the Queen and Princess. The young girls were obviously enjoying the atmosphere and talked animatedly to each other.
I looked down at our Master, it was about time that he go and mingle with the guests. I saw that his gaze had landed on the young Lunar Princess, and seemed to remain there for longer that it should have. I didn't know why at the time, but this made me uncomfortable.
Leaving my position, I knelt down beside Master Endymion. “Master, perhaps now would be a good time to go and speak with some of the guests?” My comment was not out of place, I was often the one our Master went to for advice concerning non-military matters.
“Yes, of course. You're right,” Master said as he stood. He broke his stare at the Princess and began to seek out the various party goers who were already familiar to him.
“You saw it as well?” Kunzite asked, after Master Endymion was out of earshot.
“I don't think it is anything we need to worry about,” I replied.
“I hope you're right about that.”
