Cautionary Warning

A/N: just a little sorta-songfic. title from a song by john sykes of the same name, but the song used in the fic is "strong enough" by cher. just a note: reviews do not make me update faster, but they do make me write hot, steamy, lemony sex scenes in my multi-chapter fics. keep that in mind. ^__~

enjoy!

'words'=shu's thoughts
italics=flashback, word emphasis, and another language/song

Cautionary Warning

‘Look at him, sitting there drinking and glaring like he’s the one who’s been wronged!’

Shindou Shuichi sat glaring at his boyfriend of five years, Yuki Eiri. Sakuma Ryuichi was currently on the karaoke stage singing one of Bad Luck’s older songs, while the others there – Seguchi Tohma, Nakano Hiroshi, Fujisaki Suguru, and Uesugi Tatsuha – sat singing along and laughing at the visiting actor’s antics.

Whenever Eiri turned to look at Shuichi, the rock star would throw away his glare and smile lovingly at the romance novelist, and the second those golden eyes were gone, the glare would return in full force. Hiro kept sending him concerned glances, though he should have felt concern for Eiri more than him at the moment.

‘Damn that cold, sadistic bastard!’

Shuichi was mentally cursing him because, for all he was angry with the blonde author, he still whole-heartedly loved him. And so that was why tonight, Shuichi wasn’t going to do anything more than give his lover a warning. Just thinking about why he was mad in the first place had Shuichi’s glare intensifying to frightening levels.

Eiri had been blackmailed by his editor to do a panel on a talk show last night, and Shuichi and Hiro had sat on the couple’s couch, watching the whole damn show

“This is certainly a wonderful surprise that you actually showed up, Yuki-san!” exclaimed the host.

“Hn.”

“Ah, yes, um… So, tell us a little about your new book, Yuki-san.”

“It’s just like the others.”

“Then why don’t you tell us how it’s going with Shindou Shuichi?” another member of the panel prompted. The studio audience went wild with applause.

“If it were any of your business, I’d be glad to.”

“Oh, so there must be trouble in gay paradise,” said a female panelist rather maliciously. “I wouldn’t be surprised if I picked up a tabloid tomorrow to see of picture of Yuki-san paying for more ‘wholesome’ entertainment.”

“Are you trying to say, Rika-chan, that a whore is ‘more wholesome entertainment’ than a male lover?” asked the host incredulously.

“I would think it’d be more wholesome entertainment than some whiny, clingy pop star. I can only assume that Yuki-san is tired of the little brat after five years of constant celebrity bitching and crying. But, I have to hand it to the brat, his body must be more than convenient to stay Yuki-san’s lover for five years.”

Yuki Eiri said nothing.

‘He. Fucking. Said. Nothing.’

Shuichi had sat stone still staring at the screen as Eiri stood in the middle of another of the woman’s rants about homosexuality and walked off the stage. Hiro had sat and watched Shuichi cautiously, waiting to either hold a crying Shu or hold back a rampaging Shu. When nothing happened, Hiro had put a hesitant hand on his friend’s shoulder.

“Shu?”

“Don’t worry, Hiro. I know what’s going on. And I still love him.”

“So you aren’t going to do something?”

“Oh. No, I am, my longhaired friend. I am.”

“What?” He’d been almost too afraid to ask.

“Ryu-chan is coming for a visit tomorrow. And, of course he’ll want to go to a karaoke bar.” Shuichi had begun to laugh chillingly, and Hiro had wisely left him to his plans.

His lover hadn’t come home last night after the show. That had made Shuichi sick with worry, which was another element adding to his anger tonight. After five years, Eiri had gotten better about communicating when he’d be home and when he wouldn’t. But that apparently went out the window last night.

Eiri turned toward him again, and Shuichi was too far into his thoughts of that damn talk show night to smile. Eiri’s eyes widened slightly to see his young lover glaring at him, and he leaned over toward him.

“What’s the matter with you?”

“Nothing. I’m perfectly fine. I love you.” The glare hadn’t left his face, belying his sweet tone of voice. Eiri opened his mouth to ask something else, but was stopped by Shuichi’s hand slamming down on the table and his chair being forcefully shoved back.

“Is it my turn?” Shuichi asked through gritted teeth, and Tohma wisely stepped from off the stage where he was about to make his selection to make way for the young singer.

As he picked just the right song, Ryuichi asked from his seat, “Is everything alright, Shu-chan?”

Shuichi took the mic in hand and stared out at his gathered audience.

I don’t need your sympathy. There’s nothing you can say or do for me.” His eyes swung from Ryuichi to Eiri. “And I don’t want a miracle, ‘cause you’ll never change for no one.

And I hear your reasons why. Where did you sleep last night? And was she worth it? Was she worth it?

’Cause I’m strong enough to live without you. Strong enough, and I quit cryin’ long enough. Now I’m strong enough to know you gotta go.

There’s no more to say so save your breath and walk away. No matter what I hear you say, I’m strong enough to know you gotta go.

So you feel misunderstood? Well, baby, have I got news for you. On being used, I could write the book, but you don’t want to hear about it. ‘Cause I’ve been losin’ sleep, and you’ve been going cheap. And she ain’t worth half of me, it’s true. Now I’m telling you:

That I’m strong enough to live without you. Strong enough, and I quit cryin’ long enough. Now I’m strong enough to know you gotta go.

Here, Shuichi closed his eyes and let his body move to the small musical interlude. His audience stared at him, speechless.

Come hell or waters high, you’ll never see me cry, ‘cause this is our last goodbye, it’s true. I’m telling you:

Now I’m strong enough to live without you. Strong enough, and I quit cryin’ long enough. Now I’m strong enough to know you gotta go.

There’s no more to say so save your breath and walk away. No matter what I hear you say, I’m strong enough to know you gotta go.

Shuichi decided to skip the last repeat of the chorus and danced as the music died away. When nothing but silence was left, he replaced the mic in its stand and exited the stage. He wasn’t interested in anything else but Eiri’s reaction to the song.

“That was an idiotic choice, moron.”

Shuichi smiled. “Strike one, Eiri. And don’t underestimate the power of Cher.” He picked up his jacket and walked away from them, leaving a confused group of men, save for Hiro, behind him.

“What the hell was that about?” The irate writer turned to Hiro.

“Why don’t you ask Rika-chan?” he supplied.

An elegant blonde brow arched in question. Then the light of realization brightened those golden eyes. “Shit!”

“Bingo.”

Everyone watched as the author scrambled after his young lover. Ryuichi turned to Hiro.

“Care to explain what the hell just happened here?”

Hiro just smiled. “Nothing much. Just a little cautionary warning.”
