Adopted By Cats
A/N: a friend kicked me into reading tsubasa, and now i'm kinda hooked. this was a ficlet written for a prompt contest put on by some LJ friends, my first tsubasa ficlet. the prompt is 'adopted by cats,' hence the title.
Special Note: this takes place when the gang is in Outo Country. some dialogue is taken straight from the manga and belongs to CLAMP. the story Fai tells, however, is completely mine.
enjoy!!

“You bastard! How dare you give me that weird name!”
Sakura was startled from her work as Kurogane and Syaoran returned to the café. She turned from the table as Kurogane stormed in, Syaoran a meek presence behind him. The ninja stomped over to Fai as the magician went back to painting.
“That girl working in the city hall said that we can use pseudonyms,” Fai informed Kurogane cheerily. “But I don’t know the language of this country. So I drew this!” Fai threw his arms up in the air, a piece of paper dangling from his right hand baring the pictures of a large dog and a small dog. “The names become ‘Big Doggie’ and ‘Little Doggie’! See?”
Fai picked up another piece of paper and began painting. “And I’m this. Sakura-chan is this.” He stood and flipped the paper around. “‘Big Kitty’ and ‘Little Kitty.’”
As Fai then showed Sakura and Syaoran his logo for the café, Kurogane unsheathed his sword, a dark aura surrounding him. “Damn you…” he cursed and began chasing Fai around the shop. “Is your brain only filled with rubbish!? Let me cut it out and clean it for you!”
“Wahh! Big Doggie is mad!” Fai cried, giggling even as Kurogane swung his long sword at his head.

Sakura scurried about her room trying to dress in Outo Country’s attire. She was late, and that was not a good thing to be when it was opening day for the café. She hurriedly ran out the door to the stairs, but she slipped and crashed into the wall, hitting her forehead against the wood. Rubbing the sore spot, she continued down the stairs.
“Good morning!” she proclaimed loudly, still frantically trying to fix her hair.
“Good morning, Sakura-chan!” Fai returned, holding a pot of tea.
“Sorry I’ve overslept!” Sakura continued to battle her hair as she apologized.
“That’s alright. We haven’t decided on our operating hours yet. Not to mention that you haven’t fully recovered yet,” Fai cheerfully informed her, pouring a cup of tea for the girl.
“Starting tomorrow, I will make myself get up early everyday!” she vowed.
Fai raised his arms in the air, teapot and all. “Yay! I’ll cheer for you!”
“Where are Mokona, Syaoran-kun, and Kurogane-san?”
“They went to the city hall. Last night, kijis appeared again. They defeated those kijis…. That’s why they went to the city hall to collect their earnings.”
“Last night?” Sakura asked worriedly.
“Yup,” said Fai. “You fell asleep last night. That’s why you didn’t know.”
“Are they hurt?”
“Syaoran-kun is fine.” Fai turned to look at Sakura. “Are you worried?”
“Yes…. Syaoran-kun tries so hard to get my memories back,” she said sadly. “But I can’t do anything for him. Sometimes, Syaoran-kun looks like… he’s very lonely….”
“You can,” Fai said, and Sakura looked at him questioningly. “There are things you can do to help. Sakura-chan, you can smile at him. To Syaoran-kun, Sakura-chan’s smile is the best energy source.” He smiled gently at her, and Sakura didn’t know what to say.
“And… this is Sakura-chan’s energy source,” Fai said, placing a tray of breakfast before her on the counter. “You are hungry, aren’t you? Eat up!”
“Thank you!” Sakura exclaimed in surprise. She tried it and smiled. “It’s good!”
“Really?” Fai asked giddily, one leg kicked up behind him.
“Fai-san, you’re great! Not only can you draw, you can even cook!”
“Well, knowing how to draw is crucial to setting up magical wards. As for cooking, it’s similar to making potions. But… Mokona and Syaoran-kun both like my cooking, except… Big Doggie!”
Sakura stared at him in confusion before laughing. “Fai-san, how did you ever come up with those names?”
Fai gave her a cat-like grin. “Because Kuro-pi looks so much like a big, bad doggie when he’s worked up!”
They laughed together, and Sakura recalled their own names. “But how did you think of our names?”
Fai’s grin grew mysterious. He took her hand in his and leaned in close. “Because, Sakura-hime, I was adopted by cats when I was a small boy.”
Sakura wanted to laugh, but he was being so serious. Could it be true? “Really?”
“Oh, yes. I come from Celes Country, where the snow is everlasting, and the wind is fierce. When I was but a child, I stumbled out into the snow looking for my lost bird. I walked so far through so much snow, only to lose myself instead of finding my bird. There was no hope of returning home.
“I found a cave at some point in my wanderings, and, fearing for my health and scared for my well-being, I entered it, hoping that my parents would find me and take me home. But alas, it wasn’t to be.”
Sakura brought her other hand to her mouth, trying to stifle a sob. “That’s so sad, Fai-san.”
“Yes, it was sad. I cried and cried despite the freezing wind that froze those tears to my face.” Fai closed his eyes in grief. “At some point I fell asleep, and when I awoke, the world outside was calm and white. I couldn’t hear a sound as I stepped out of the cave, except that of heavy snow falling from the boughs of tress.”
Fai turned from her dramatically. “Though the sun shone through the canopy of the forest, it was cold, and my frail little body shook hard as I began to cry once again.” Suddenly he turned back. “And then, behind me, I heard a twig snap, and I turned as fast as my feet could move through the thick snow. In front of my eyes was a large, white cat with black spots, the likes of which I’d never before seen!
“It stared at me with calculating blue eyes, deciding whether to leave me to die in the snow or kill me itself.”
Sakura gasped. “What did you do, Fai-san?”
“I ran to it and clung to its large body!” Fai proclaimed jovially.
“Why did you do that, Fai-san? It could have been dangerous!”
“But it looked so warm, and I was so cold, Sakura-chan! I threw my arms around its neck and cried, its warmth seeping into my tiny body. And then it lifted a giant paw and pushed against my chest, making me lose my grip and stumble back. It stared at me again before turning around and taking a few steps. My cries grew louder as I watched it walk away, but it stopped and looked back at me, its eyes calling to me, almost as if saying, ‘Follow me, little one.’
“And follow it I did. It led me through the snow, and I had no idea in which direction I was heading. I only knew that if I wanted to survive, I had to stay with the cat. A while after we began the trek, the cat stopped at another cave, much bigger than the one I had stayed in the night before. It stepped through the mouth, and I hesitated. It looked back at me and swung its head in a forward direction, indicating that I should come in as well.”
“And what happened, Fai-san?”
“What choice did I have? It was either follow into the warmth of the cave or freeze in the snow.” Fai sighed. “You can imagine how scared I was. But I wiped my tears away and followed the giant cat into the cave, and what I found was surprising.
“Before me was a vast cave filled with giant cats and kittens, each separated into their own family units. My cat led me through the groups, growling at other cats that tried to get near me. All eyes were on us as we made our way to the back of the cave, where the largest family by far lay.
“We reached a large collection of flat boulders that the family of cats rested on, and my guide moved behind me and used its head to push me towards the rocks. I took this to mean he wished me to climb, and so I did. As I reached the top, he jumped up next to me and padded over to the edge of the rock. All the cats in the cave gazed at him as he began to growl and mewl.
“Then his tail wrapped around my arm and pulled me forward so all the cats and kittens could look at me. I was scared suddenly, thoughts that I shouldn’t have followed the cat running through my head. But then a female from behind me came up and rubbed her head against the male’s before turning to me and rubbing her head against my chest. She was so warm that I was hugging her before I thought about it.
“And that’s how I found myself taken in by the spotted cat clan of Celes Country,” Fai finished with a flare, his arms raised in celebration.
Sakura clapped, tears in her eyes. “That was a wonderful story, Fai-san! I’m so happy that you didn’t stay alone in the snow and cold!”
“Yeah,” Fai said, somewhat sadly, his eyes becoming distant. Then he blinked and smiled happily. “Say, Sakura-chan, would you like to learn to make something?”
“Of course!” Sakura smiled brightly and joined Fai in the kitchen.

“And then you shape it like this,” Fai instructed.
“Oh!”
“We are back!” cried Mokona and flew toward Fai.
“Welcome back!” Fai chirped.
“Welcome back,” Sakura said as she wiped flour off of her cheek, smiling as Syaoran trailed in after Mokona. Kurogane stomped in behind him and kicked a chair nearby.
“Is Kuro-doggie still mad?” Fai asked a nervous Syaoran.
“Don’t call me doggie!” Kurogane said darkly.
Sakura stepped closer to Syaoran. “What happened?”
“Er, well,” Syaoran mumbled. “We went back to the city hall again before we came back. Kurogane-san wanted to go to the Suguyaru department and change his registered name, but…”
“You can’t.” Kurogane stared at the receptionist in disbelief. “If you want to change your name, please reenter this country one more time. But if you do that, all the money you have earned up to now will be invalid.”
Fai laughed merrily when Syaoran finished the story. Kurogane whipped his head around to stare at the magician. He drew his sword and once again chased Fai around the shop.
“What are you laughing at!? Even that girl in the Intelligence House knows about it! Why you!”
Sakura and Syaoran looked on nervously, and Syaoran sighed. “It kind of makes you wonder how Fai-san came up with the names in the first place.”
Sakura whipped her head around and grasped Syaoran’s hand in both of hers, a determined gleam in her eyes as she proceeded to relay Fai’s heartwarming story. “Fai-san was adopted by cats!”
