Arrival
Preface
In the year 1965, a British doctor made an astonishing discovery. A patient who had just moved to London from Dover and registered with his office, displayed traits never before seen in a Human being.
The patient carried not only her normal female reproductive organs…but in fact, male ones as well. This wasn’t exactly unheard of, what was however, was that both sets were full functional. That patient and their spouse welcomed a new set of twins into the world later that year.
Both of whom were also androgynous.
Other cases came in from all around the world. Slowly but surly a new type of human was arriving.
Then came the Second Impact, the events of which left some whole countries decimated and whole cities destroyed. Add to that rapidly falling birth rates and things never seemed bleaker, but not for the world’s tiny androgynous population. What ever after effects from the Second Impact which had caused the birth rates in normal humans to fall didn’t affect them at all. The UN, which had reformed after the signing of the Valentine Treaty on February 14 2001, recognized this.
By 2010 the population was large enough for the UN to pass what became known as Order 1834. It granted Androgynous individuals the same equal rights as people with normal sexual characteristics.
A study done in 1994 identified 3 types of Androgynous humans. It was this study the UN based its Order 1834 on.
True Androgyne - A person who has a near perfect even mix of male and female sexual characteristics, only 10 such persons known, fall into this category. This is the rarest of all.
Male Androgyne – A person who has operational primary sexual characteristics of both sexes, but only male secondary characteristics. Such persons would appear as a normal male but carry the primary sexual characteristics from both men and women.
Female Androgyne – The exact opposite of the Male Androgyne. These persons carry both male and female primary sexual characteristics, but only female secondary characteristics. Such a person would appear as a normal female but like their male counterpart carry the primary sexual characteristics of both men and women.
The term Androgyne was adopted to classify the entire group.
Androgyne children have a much harder time during adolescence due to the fact that not only must they experience it from the male perspective but the female as well. Though depending on which type of Androgyne they are, the effects will be lesser or greater depending. Male Androgyne children go through puberty just as normal male children, except they also must deal with an awakening female reproductive system. Thankfully for them however, it is not as active and only ovulates once every 3 to 4 months.
Female Androgyne children must go through the problems associated with their awakening menstrual cycle but also their developing male systems, which are known to cause much embarrassment especially at inappropriate times.
In 2001 Yui Ikari gave birth to her son Shinji, an Androgyne Male. Even though the UN would not “officially” recognize the existence of androgynous humans for another 9 years. Her doctors advised her and her husband Gendo Ikari against any form of reconstructive surgery as tests had shown both sets of reproductive organs active and healthy.
Shinji would live with the consequences of that until the Order 1834 was handed down. In 2004 when his mother was killed in a lab accident Shinji was passed off to his teacher by his father. Thankfully Shinji was brought into a household which accepted him. His teacher’s wife was an androgyne female. They raised him as best they knew how. Eventually Shinji quit referring to them by their name and simply called them father and mother. He had actually continued to go to public school well into 6th grade. By that time Order 1834 was issued and everything changed for him. His adoptive mother and father decided that with him maturing as he was, it would be better to start home schooling him now, than to wait for the inevitable. The teasing and such that would result when it finally came out he was Androgyne.
Thank god his adoptive mother had been there when he was 13 to help him though his first period. He wasn’t sure he would have survived otherwise. Though they did only get easier there after. And dealing with them became less embarrassing.
A few months after his 14th birthday Shinji received a package (more like note) from his birth father Gendo Ikari, calling him to return to Tokyo 3. He really didn’t have much choice so he packed a week’s worth of clothes in 2 duffel bags along with a few personal things and headed out the next day.
If only he had known just how hectic his life would now be.
