How Did I Fall In Love With You?
“Gunter!” a five-year-old Gwendel von Voltaire called as he entered the gardens of Blood Pledge Castle. He’d been searching for his friend for the better part of an hour. The smaller boy had not been in any of the usual places he could normally be found. Gwendel was becoming rather frustrated.
“Gunter!” he called again.
“Gwendel?” a small voice sniffled from a thick patch of rose bushes.
The dark-haired boy frowned when he saw the state his friend was in. “What in the world are you doing in there?”
Gunter was quite upset. He was clearly crying and looked as though he had been for some time. His hair was tangled in the thorns. His clothes were torn, and he was covered in scratches.
“I came out here to hide from Anissina,” the pale boy said miserably. “Some of the bigger boys were playing out here. One of them pushed me, and I fell into the bushes.” His little lips quivered. “I’m stuck, Gwendel! Help!” he pleaded.
Taking pity on his distraught friend, Gwendel began to carefully extract Gunter from the thorny bushes. He began by gently untangling the pale lavender hair from the vines before detaching the other boy’s clothes from the thorns. When he’d finally managed to remove his teary-eyed companion from his blooming prison, he led the smaller boy over to the fountain and sat him down. Thus far unable to calm poor Gunter, Gwendel wracked his brain for anything to quiet the pale boy.
Finally remembering what his mother did to make him feel better when he was upset, Gwendel gathered his friend in his arms, rocking a sniffling Gunter until he quieted. Noticing a scratch on Gunter’s pale cheek that was seeping a little blood, he wetted a torn piece of Gunter’s tunic and wiped the blood away. Continuing to do what his mother would do, he placed a soft kiss on the scratch.
“Don’t cry anymore, Gunter,” he said, petting the other boy’s hair.
The pale boy wiped at his eyes and cuddled against his dark-haired friend. After a while, he’d calmed enough to stop hiccoughing and lay quietly in Gwendel’s arms.
“Come on, Gunter,” Gwendel said, letting go of the smaller boy to stand and reach for Gunter’s hand. “Let’s go get some ice cream.”
“Ok,” the fair-haired boy answered, taking the offered hand and standing as well.
The two boys walked hand-in-hand back into the castle, Gunter flashing a shy, sideways smile at his rescuer as they went.
