Broken Crystals

Author’s Note: When I write fanfiction, they’re almost always based on things that I love. In this case, I love One Piece: Unlimited Adventure (which I played, beat, unlocked everything, and LOVED to death), and the Luffy/Vivi pairing. Most people think the pairing should be Luffy/Nami, and they may be right. I’m not deep into the mushy stuff, so I won’t get too deep into that, but enjoy.

This fiction contains a few spoilers for Unlimited Adventure, so you’ve been warned.

“There’s a lot of land to cover.” Sanji murmurs, working a cigarette from his pocket, slowly lifting it to his lips. “I say we split up. We can cover more ground that way. If we find any of those shitty crystals, come find the rest of us. What do you say?”

“Sounds good, as long as I’m not with you, love cook.” Zoro grumbles, eyes half-lidded as he steps forward, feet crunching and kicking up the orange and yellow leaves beneath his feet.

“Oi! Marimo! I wouldn’t go with you if my life depended on it!” Sanji growls, leaning forward, hands moving back to his pockets.

Nami rolls her eyes. “Nevermind him, Sanji. Chopper, go keep an eye on Zoro, make sure he doesn’t fall asleep somewhere.”

“Got it!” Chopper moves forward from the group, shifting into his reindeer form to catch up with Zoro.

“Sanji, come with me.” Nami continues, motioning for him to follow as she walks forward, avoiding the small stream of water leading out to the larger lake further into the ruin zone.

Sanji has no qualms with this arrangement; when called, he steps after her gracefully. “Yes, Nami-swan!”

“O-oi! What about me?” Luffy calls, folding his arms across his chest. “Who’s going with me?”

By that point, though, he was already alone. Robin, Usopp and Franky were heading after the others, ready to explore the area. Leaving Luffy alone? Probably not the smartest idea, as instead of simply following them, he works on climbing up the tall stone walls on either side, and up onto the paths above. The ‘path’ wasn’t much of a path at all. A lot of trees and bushes greet Luffy as he pushes his way past, and towards the visible ruins only a short distance away.

If there was one thing this area didn’t lack, it was the presence of ruins. There were few areas that didn’t have some kind of old, crumbling building that once served as a home for whatever denizens happened to be on the island before it sunk. Vines and trees twist together and grow uncontrollably, piercing the buildings from place to place, proving that the vegetation was steadily taking over the region.

Most buildings are impossible to enter, even by the windows. Not that the buildings were interesting enough to check – each one that Luffy peeked into was filled with little but cobwebs, and the remnants of tables and plates, but even then there was little of interest to warrant forcing entry through the small windows or around the trees and vines that obscure the entranceways.

Slightly frustrated at the lack of anything remotely interesting, Luffy makes a bee-line towards the areas of the zone more heavily laden with ruins. These ruins, though just as bad off as the earlier ones, consisted of long hallways, and were far more interesting. Despite the resident Marines looking to stop his progress, fire-breathing statues, furry little creatures, and awesome bugs held Luffy’s attention for quite some time.

It wasn’t until Luffy found his way through the long winding hallways of the ruins that his eyes caught the greatest sight he’d seen so far on the island: a beetle, and one that was on FIRE. “So COOL!” Luffy’s eyes sparkle, a huge grin lighting up on his face as he works out his bug-catching net. Now, anyone else would have been quick to realize that his net was ill equipped to handle catching something on fire, but as Luffy wasn’t ‘anyone else’, a lunge to try and scoop up the flaming beetle causes two things to happen.

One, the net catches on fire. “ACK! I NEED WATER!”

Two, the flimsy tree, also originally on fire, gave way to Luffy’s weight as he pushed against it, forcing the aspiring Pirate King to roll and tumble down a hill, bounce off a huge chunk of ruins that had broken off many years ago, and land in a secluded area. Though there were more ruins here, this out of the way spot included one thing he needed. A lake sat out front of the ruins, pristine and untouched.

Strangely, the water on the island doesn’t have a trace of salt in it, contrary to the fact that it was once beneath the ocean. This thought doesn’t even come close to crossing Luffy’s mind as he nearly skids into the lake, leaning over to thrust the flaming bug net into the water. With a soft hiss, the flames go out, but the damage was done. The bug net would be catching bugs no longer, until Usopp fixed it.

Putting the bug net away, Luffy trained his eyes on the one thing that would perk him up from the dire, bug net-less situation: apples! The ripe red fruit was present in the nearby trees leading up to this new set of ruins, and Luffy plucks them all from the trees as he enters, munching on them as he takes to the winding corridors and hallways of the ruins, just as untouched and unexplored as the previous were.

However, this one was a little different.

The orb in his pocket began to glow, indicating the presence of something close by. A turn in the path leads down a longer hallway, straight to a statue, and a force field, barring Luffy from exploring any further. Poking around a fire-breathing statue offers Luffy his prize: a glowing white-and-blue ball, which reacts to the orb in his hands. He doesn’t even have to do anything, as the blue ball disappears. The nearby force field disappears with a soft hum, just as the ball of light does.

Curious of what was in the next room, Luffy made his way in, reaching a hand up to place atop his hat. “Eh? Another crystal?”

One part of him returns to only a few hours prior to their exploring this zone, and Nami. That part tells him to go back and find the others first to tell them of his discovery. Another part of him tells him to just go and see what happens. The crystal atop this monument was a bright red, while the monument itself seemed to be made of some kind of black rock or marble, and as Luffy reaches out to touch it, it’s smooth and cool to the touch.

Just like the other crystals before it, this one burst to life, releasing a bright flash of color – red, like the color it contained. Guarding his eyes from the bright flash with his arms, Luffy lowers them to see that little has changed.

“Luffy.” A familiar voice echoes from the place he’d entered.

Turning on his heels, Luffy’s eyes go wide, one hand still resting on his hat. “… Vivi?!”

“Yes, Luffy.” Vivi smiles, slowly stepping forward from the entrance, reaching her hands into her pockets. “It’s been a long time, hasn’t it? I was hoping we’d get to see each other once again. Are you the Pirate King yet?”

Luffy shakes his head slowly. “Not yet, but I think we’re really close!” He grins.

“Yes, well… One Piece is about to get a little further away.” Vivi smirks, leaning forward, pulling her strange weapons from her pockets – sharpened jewels, not unlike peacock feathers, connected by a string to little rings that allowed a finger to slip through and manipulate them – and sending one straight for Luffy’s head.

Though caught off guard, Luffy manages to lean back just in time to avoid getting hit. The peacock slashers miss his face (and his precious hat!) by only inches, forcing Luffy to flail his arms to regain his balance. “Oi, Vivi! What’s the big idea?!”

Vivi chuckles, throwing both peacock slashers forward, showing off a range that betrays the short weapons. “I wish things could have been different. I wanted to go with you all so bad..”

Avoiding the attacks at the last second, Luffy hops up and onto the monument holding the crystal, balancing warily on it. “We wanted you to come with us, but this doesn’t make any sense. Why are you..?” Then it occurred to him. This wasn’t the Vivi he knew. Though she acted, talked, had the memories of the Vivi they all knew, she held an aggression that was uncharacteristic for the blue-haired princess.

Seeing the look on the pirate’s face, Vivi giggles, twirling the peacock slashers around her fingers so quickly that they blur. “So you finally understand. If you want to figure out the secret of this island, you have to defeat me. Do you think you have it in you?”

Luffy smirks, hopping down off the monument and cracking his knuckles gently. “If I just remember that you’re not the real Vivi, I should be okay.”

“Then show me how far you’ve come.”

Underestimating Vivi would have been a deadly prospect. She was faster, stronger than he remembered her. Her skills with her odd weapon were borderline mastery, and predicting her attacks, let alone avoiding them, was difficult. The cuts on his arms and face, though shallow, were numerous and easy to see. The tears on his shirt and pants were also clear indicators of the difficult battle.

Despite knowing that this Vivi wasn’t the real one, it didn’t make it any easier for Luffy to hurt her. He just kept aiming to disarm her, pulling his punches to avoid hurting her. Once he’d disarmed her and destroyed her only two weapons by throwing them harshly against the wall (they shattered), Vivi resorted to fighting hand to hand, launching a swift kick towards the pirate.

Now much easier to predict, Luffy has no trouble snagging her leg in mid-air, and the accompanying punch, pushing her down onto the ground and onto her back, moving to pin her hands above her head, straddling her waist with a grin. “There. I’ve defeated you.”

“You have.” Vivi nods slowly, closing her eyes and breathing a sigh of relief.

For being an illusion, Vivi was surprisingly life-like. The warmth of her body through her clothing was evident, the same clothing that she’d had on when he first met her. It brought him back, but only for a moment, the woman beneath him wriggling slightly. It was strange, though. Normally when they’d defeated an illusion up to this point, they just disappeared, the monument crumbled, and the crystal shattered.

Was there something else he needed to do? Did he really have to beat her into submission, like they’d had to do with the others?

Luffy could only hope that that wasn’t the case.

“So, now that you have me like this, don’t you have something you want?” Vivi inquires slyly, giving him a knowing look.

“Wh-What do you mean?” Luffy blinks, looking down at her face.

Vivi giggles gently. “You don’t have to act naive, Luffy. If the circumstances had been different, our relationship would have blossomed. Now’s your chance to live something that you might never get to enjoy with the real Princess Vivi..”

“But you’re not her.” Luffy reasons, looking her over now, his eyes drifting down to the modest breasts, restrained only by a thin layer of cloth.

“For you, I am. Don’t think I’ve never wanted this, too. I’m the recollection of her memories, her thoughts, her experiences. I’m just a little more…” Vivi pauses for a few moments to consider her next words. “Open.”

Luffy tilts his head slowly to one side, moving to stand up and release her hands, offering her a hand to stand up. Vivi accepts it, pulling herself to a stand, dusting herself off. “Well?” She looks at him.

“Let me give it some thought..” Luffy murmurs.

“You don’t have that kind of time, Luffy. This is now or never. Don’t let this moment slip by, else you’ll regret it forever. You’re Monkey D. Luffy. I’ve never known you to not take advantage of something good.” Vivi smiles, gently reaching a hand up to pluck his hat off and toss it gently towards the monument, where it hits the cool marble, and slides to the floor. Her hands slowly lift up and run through the unkempt raven black hair.

Normally this might be an easy decision to make, but Luffy finds himself struggling. This is Vivi, but it’s not Vivi. Still, he may never see Vivi again, and their chances of being together like this would be rare, if not impossible, especially if she became the queen, due to her father passing away, or stepping down. After another moment, Luffy nods and reaches his hands up slowly to tear the bit of elastic from her hair, letting it fall down from its ponytail, flowing down her back.

Understanding quickly his decision, Vivi leans forward, nuzzling her face softly against his neck. “I love you, Luffy. I just wish things could have been different..” She whispers. Luffy’s eyes move down to look at her, and he smiles a little. “I know.” Is all he replies, reaching fingers gently beneath her chin and lifting her face up to kiss her lips softly. Vivi almost seems to melt into the kiss as she moves to work his shirt off of his body.

Luffy continues the kiss for a moment, breaking it only to work her long sleeved shirt, then her under shirt, off of her body. Vivi wastes little time working her shorts down off of her body, kicking them softly to one side. Luffy looks down to drink her in, stepping back slightly just to get a good look at her. Vivi smiles, not shy at all as she just allows him to look.

“I am, too, Luffy.” Vivi whispers, disappearing in a bright flash of white light.

The monument crumbles.

The crystal falls to the ground, shattering, destroyed forever.

Once again, Luffy was alone.

With a gasp, Vivi awoke in a cold sweat, her body shivering. The familiar surroundings of her room in Alabasta staring back at her. She glances around quickly, spying the familiar form of Igaram seated on the chair next to her, asleep. “Igaram. Igaram!” She calls to him.

Immediately, the white-haired man awakens, and his eyes go wide. He leans forward quickly. “Princess, you’re fine! All of a sudden you just collapsed, and you’ve been out for hours. What happened?” He insists, reaching a hand up to feel her forehead.

Allowing Igaram to feel, Vivi licks her lips, closing her eyes.

“I don’t know, but I had the strangest dream..”
