Angels of Men
Prologue
The Boy
Dr. Ritsuko Akagi made her way towards the EVA holding tanks for routine maintenance and checking on the exoskeleton of Unit-01. Life had been fairly dull since the last Angel attack a few weeks ago, and though she knew that it was wrong of her to wish it, she did want something out of the ordinary to happen. Well, as far as out of the ordinary can get when you work with colossus cybernetic machines made from the genetic code of Angels that is.
As she chuckled to herself at the thought she entered the pitch black entry chamber of Unit-01. Waiting for a moment to allow the automated lights to kick in before she got to work, she had the strangest unexplainable feeling that she wasn’t alone. When the lights did turn on seconds later the good Doctor nearly jumped clean out of her skin and did jump backwards pressing herself flush against the green steel of the Eva’s restraints.
Looking down with complete and total surprise she tried to understand what she was seeing. Before her lay the naked body of a boy; mid-teens she guessed by his appearance, with unkempt shaggy brown hair, who was lying on his back directly infront of Unit-01’s head, as if he had been placed there. Looking around nervously, to make sure there was no one about to jump out at her, Ritsuko quickly grabbed the hard-line in the restraints next to her and connected to Commander Ikari.
“What?”
“Sir, you need to get a security team down to Unit-01 right now.” Said the doctor quickly, who never took her eyes off the quietly sleeping boy infront of her.
“Oh, and why is that Dr. Akagi?”
“Because I am right now looking at a naked boy I have never seen before.”
As the commander of NERV sat in his darkened office he was, for once in his life, taken aback, he couldn’t have heard what he thought he had heard. He glanced up at Fuyutsuki who looked as surprised as he felt and simply shrugged at him.
“Could you repeat that?”
“Right now there is an unknown boy lying naked on the catwalk infront of Unit-01’s head. I have no idea who he is or how he got here, send a security team.” Repeated Ritsuko slightly irritated at the apparent slow wittedness of the usually razor sharp commander.
“Are you serious?”
“YES! Take a look at the damn security feed if you want, by all means take your time.” Finished the Doctor, her voice dripping in sarcasm.
As Gendo Ikari turned on the main camera feed for the Unit-01 chamber and saw the naked body lying not fifteen feet from Dr. Akagi, he decided not to punish the good doctor for her cheek. Instead he instantly hung up and called for security to be sent to Unit-01’s loading chamber to immediately apprehend the intruder.
As he hung up again he looked back at the boy, ignoring the blonde doctor now silently ranting in the corner of the screen, and zoomed in. As the deputy commander quickly made his way round to look at the security feed himself, Gendo’s eyes narrowed at what he was seeing. It couldn’t be, he could not be seeing what he thought he was seeing, it simply was not possible.
“How can…it isn’t possible, that can’t be what I think it is.” voiced Fuyutsuki in a frightened tone as he looked at what was hanging around the boy’s neck on a silver chain.
“It is,” said the commander from behind his interlinked hands, looking at the small, glowing red glass-like sphere “That boy has an S^2 organ hanging around his neck. He is an Angel.” He finished, more musing to himself than anything.
“An Angel?” asked Fuyutsuki quickly, “but how? There has been no alarm, the Magi haven’t detected anything.”
The commander said nothing as he contemplated the boy through the screen, he watched as the security guards arrived and carried the boy away, likely first to one of the medical units for scanning. If that had been an S^2 organ then what the hell was it doing around that boys neck? And how the hell did that boy get there, the whole base had better security than most government or military facilities combined, it was impossible to simply get in without security clearance.
He would have to wait, with the patience he was famed for, until the boy was awake. Until that time he would remain a secret under armed guards and 24 hour surveillance. He would not risk this boy, who managed to get into his facility and who wore the power source of an Angel around his neck, to escape him.
Unfortunately, little did he know, that this boy was far greater a thing than anything he had faced before, even grater than the First, and that it would be this boy’s fate to change the destiny of the world and would influence Project-E in ways that none of Gendo’s or even SEELE’s scenarios could ever predict.
But, for now at least; he did not know, he couldn’t know, so he simply looked on at the weak looking boy through his computer screen deep in thought as he was carried off to be scanned, Dr. Akagi never leaving his side, thinking to herself that from this day forth she would never ever wish for something strange to happen again.
